Well ever since day one I have had issues in one form or another. I while back I started getting cylinder 6 misfire codes. Replaced coil, issue still remained. At the same time I noticed I was losing some coolant, not much but some. Also found foam/froth/white junk under my oil cap. Took it in for those reasons. They drained the oil checked everything over and pressure tested the cooling system. Found a tiny pinhole on the neck of the res. As for the froth he blamed condensation and assured me he cleaned everything out and it was good to go. Fast forward about a month, still getting cylinder 6 misfire codes and now losing more and more coolant. Also developed a joyous knock. This time I noticed the oil level was about 8" on the stick thanks to the coolant which was now in the pan.
I bring it back to him to deal with. *snip useless details* 5 weeks in and the only communication with him was initiated by me. Week 6 I have had enough and read him the riot act. He feeds me his story that he fired all his employees....hard running a business on his own....yada yada yada. Tells me he didnt want to contact the warranty company for fear of them not covering it. (they wont cover anything related to gaskets or seals, engine knocks are normal wear and tear and also not covered)

[Quick back story....Bought the X5 based on it having a brand new engine put in at the local BMW dealership. Come to find out it was not new, but possibly either a rebuild or just a swap. He gives me free 2 yr warranty for the error.]

Week 7 rolls around and the warranty company wants a full tear down. At that point they will either take his word or send out a adjuster to inspect. All of this has happened within 8500 miles and 2 oil changes of me owning it. I bought this car because the engine in my 09' Chrysler 300 blew and the warranty would not cover it. I'll be damned if this happens to me twice in the same lifetime.

Sorry for the length. :yikes:

A used motor was swapped in and it leaks coolant into the oil? Sounds like they put an overheated motor in your X that someone swapped out because it was toasted.

You were told they "checked everything out", tell them you want to see the results of the compression/leakdown test. If they tell you it was not done read them the riot act again. That should have been done before the vehicle rolled out of the shop after the engine swap.

Demand a loaner car while the X is in the shop too, that will give them incentive to move foward on your car and not allow it to become a "dust sculpture" in their shop.

this brings up a question if anyone is aware of a database of the VINs matched to the engine serial numbers... I have been on a lookout for such a database for several years now, to no avail.... good thing we can do the real OEM and the check the built sheets based on the VINs...

With the engine serial numbers, one could theoretically "verify" if the engine in his prospect buy is original, or may have been swapped, and if it were swapped, to trace to original car to see the fate of the donor...

i know, i know, sounds like too much of investigative work, but aren't a PPI or a carfax investigative tools to begin with?...

IMO, the only real way to rid those pesky holes left over from the roof rail delete.....:)

Replaced both front air strut assemblies with Arnott units. The tank is back in action.
