Ok finally got my voltage regulator on my generator to hold out enough to connect the internet. I've talked to Slick briefly and he is very sick, hopefully he gets well soon and starts to take it easy a little. I know it is tough, but you will be no good to your own family if you are KO'd.

Slick to describing Brooklyn and the rest of NYC as a war zone and it is. NJ isn't much better. Out here in Keyport, we got it pretty bad. Storm surge his our house, but luckily we were far enough from the shore to have the water in the streets and not out house. Boats and 4' of sand still block Rt 35. I've been helping neighbors with hooking up their generators to their furnace to at least get some heat. Some furnaces can get this done but older ones can't. It is difficult to tell someone I can't give them heat because their furnace is too old or requires too many starting watts to turn on. I've been standing in line every day for 3 hours waiting for gas to fill up 5 gallon gas cans so our generators don't become paperweights. On Wednesday at a Gulf station while waiting in line, someone tried jumping the line and someone else pulled out a gun and started shooting. Luckily State Troopers were there to defuse the situation quickly, but could you imagine losing a life over gasoline? I know gasoline trumps a lot of things right now, but not a life. I haven't filled up the X yet and it is sitting with a half tank. The nearest gas stations near me is 3 towns over. You are right Slick, gas is getting sparse.

We have 4 marinas by the house and all of them are gone. They just aren't there anymore. Boats that were left in the water are now on the road, marsh, or launched into peoples homes. I've been out with my chainsaw trying to help cut down down trees but with wires still being live in some parts, it just became too dangerous.

Monmouth county has been declaired as disaster area and yesterday Gov. Christie signed a Bill to ration gasoline purchases to odd and even days according to Lic. Plate number.

For any one in New Jersey:

To purchase gasoline; if you Lic Plate ends in an even number, you may fill up on even days. If you Lic Plate ends with an odd number or letter, you may fill up on odd days. If you go on the wrong day, you will be refused gasoline.

This is just anarchy here. My generator is just about maxed out, feeding half the neighborhood with power to their sump pumps. It really sucks, but I've had to warn neighbors not to split the line, i.e. putting a 3 way splitter on their hot line to power other things. There was a neighbor who put a six way splitter on his line to power his fridge, pump, aux pump, space heater, and microwave. I am feeding power to 6 houses and just from him, every time he turns his microwave on, he pops my generator. I warned him twice about it, so hopefully he gets the hint.

Naz, I've been trying to text and call you but my cell service is still sporadic. If you are able to get on here and need help, let me know. I'll try to keep the gen running to get on the internet.

Same goes to anyone in NJ and NY. Slick, if you need something, let me know.

God's Speed everyone!

Young,

HOLY SHIT!

Those stories you are describing are nuts man! Luckily the family is safe, and that's truly all that matters right now. People pulling out guns and shit? Wow it's gotta be insane out there.

How are you holding up bro? You are always welcome to come hang out at Cornell. It's biz as usual here.

Just stay strong out there. Keep chugging away. Hopefully things will start getting back to normal soon

Dude right back at you TTGTR. If I get my hands on a barrel of fuel I will come out to you. Yea I heard and seen the destruction there. If that neighbor doesn't get it about your generator, you might have to cut him off. Stay safe dude. Keep in touch. Going up on another roof in an hour.

I am getting a propane/natural gas generator for my house. Once this clears up a bit. Don't want to leave my family stranded ever again.

The gas shortage is making prices go up on everything. Building supplies are up what feels about 5% already. I'll figure it all out on Monday when I get back to the office. We also have price gouging. Some stations are charging $6/gal. I hope someone reports them. I can't believe some are trying to get rich off of others misery.

Werd. Young. Close up shop and come stay with me if you want. My basement is a full apt. Warm, full kitchen and bath. We will hook up that laundry and you can chill as long as you need. The couch is BS, but I have an inflatable mattress and 2 sleeping bags. Should be fine. Let me know bud.

Thanks guys, yeah things have been getting a little better. Some pumps started opening up today and no guns being pulled out with max security State Troopers and Pump shotty's.

I pulled my neighbors off after seeing the line being split 24 times!!!. Generator went out 28 times today!!! I had it and yanked everyone off. Everyone had multiple lines going off the hot feed. I mean I don't have a problem if you want to hook up your fridge and a lamp, but not if you're going to wire your stove, micro, and vent fan?!?!?! No, I am trying to be nice and offer some sort of narmalcy, no one is pitching in to stand in line for with me for hours at 6am. So I am done. Now I have my own generator hooked up to my tv, internet, fridge and light.

Tomorrow I am going to try and back feed my furnace to get the heat working.

Other than the power being out, we are ok. I appreciate all the generosity especially from Naz and Slick. Unfortunately Naz if we went up to Cornell, we would be drunk every night lol. Partyyyyy!!!!!

Hopefully things will turn back to normal soon!

Good go hear. I just got home myself. Beat. One more roof tomorrow, and I'm chilling a bit.

I think I killed my phones batteries. The sporadic voltage, and non stop car charging did a number on them.

Yea things have calmed down a bit here too. But Getting fuel is worse. Before there were epic lines, now the stations are just empty. I should be ok for a week I think.

Yea keep them off the gen TTGTR. That extension chord can melt and catch fire by your generator. That could be an issue for.

See where the power goes to your furnace. Check to see if you can find an access box by it. If you can, I can walk you through plugging it in straight to the gen. Careful going from the breaker. You might have other items on that circuit. You can do it, but don't power the breaker, power just the wires out of it. So remove breaker, and take out the black wire. Remember, black is power. Call me if you need help.

TwinTurboGTR 11-03-2012 06:13 PM

Thanks bud. I found some 8 wire so that should be strong enough for the load. I got two twist lock plugs and gonna attach those two tonight. So should be straight forward.

SlickGT1 11-03-2012 06:20 PM

You got it. Fairly straight forward.

Ok, just got the scare of my life. EMS, NJSP, Aberdeen Twsp Police, and Aberdeen FD, just came down our street with their blues and twos on. I thought they were going to say we were being evacuated or they knew something we didn't, but it was the Red Cross and FEMA coming to provide food, water, and ice. State police has been giving out chains to secure gas cans and generators. I have studs and ramsets and shot my generator into the concrete pad and store the gas in the shed and have it dead bolted.

My heart sunk when I heard those sirens.

SlickGT1 11-04-2012 01:29 AM

Lol I got a scare of my life yesterday. I cleared a boiler pilot pipe. Installed it back in. Now when I came in to this ladies house, I thought I smelled gas, but my nose is running so I wasn't sure. Either way, I check all the pipes with soap water, all good. I pull out my lighter, but something isn't sitting right. I check all the pipe connections with the lighter now. All seems fine no little flames anywhere. Ok. I go to light the pilot. It finally lights. I switch it to run, all of a sudden the thermostat fires the boiler. Boom. The entire floor explodes in my face. I jumped like 30 feet back. Nearly crapped myself. The huge flame from the boiler ignited gas sitting low on the floor. Natural gas is heavy, so it is always on the bottom. Turns out this house got was a dump, the upstairs stove was leaking, the gas made it past the floor and sunk in the boiler room. Learned my lesson. I should have trusted my nose right away.
