I thought at first you were running 12's and was really impressed. Somebody clue me in. Is high 14's really that impressive for an X5, especially with so many modifications?

Next time you go to the dragstrip I would stop immediately when the second of the two staging lights comes on. That way you will know you have staged as close to the same way each time. Always use the same lane. Use the sport mode but don't shift manually. I would not torque brake, just floor it from an idle when it is time to go. Short staging will give you the fastest time and highest speed. Your first goal would be to generate consistent times for each measurement on the time sheet, especially for the 60 and 330ft. times. Using the 3 runs the variance in 60 foot times is .145, from 60 to 330 it is .2337. An X5 4 wheel drive automatic in sport mode letting it shift on it's own with DSC and air-conditioning always off and consistent tire pressure would result in much smaller variances. If you were not staging exactly the same that would account for some of the difference. Am I correct to assume that there is no wheel spin off the line? Was the fastest time the last run?. Reason I am asking is that as air temperature reduces power increases and will impact ET especially at the higher speeds. The greatest variation in times were from 1/8 to 1000Ft. as well as from 1000ft to 1/4. If the air temperature or wind didn't change much than I would lean toward a loss of torque which would happen if The shifting RPMS were not the same each time, putting the engine at a different place on the torque/horsepower curve. Generalized rule of thumb is that each extra 100 pounds of weight equals 1 car length at the end of a quarter mile. I gallon of gas weighs 6.073lb. I would be have no more than an 1/8 of a tank and take a 5 gallon can of gas to add if need be. I would also remove the spare tire, the cover over it, the back seat my sub woofer. Some tracks offer higher octane unleaded fuel or you can likely find some place locally. If you would like further reduce your times I would find 4 smaller diameter wheels/tires. The smaller the overall diameter the faster the time. That is until you get too much wheel spin. There are lots of other small things that will help. |

It can be a big list of mods and still a small improvement in performance if all the right things are not on the list. Mods can actually reduce performance. X5 e53 is 5000 lbs and the engine options don't develop huge torque numbers--torque is what gets that weight moving. From what I have been able to find as far as mods, there will not be an E53 in the 12s unless it has forced induction and then some. An example would be a tune--if the tune shortens the torque curve, that could decrease performance. As far as top speed, the frontal area of an E53 is so large that except with huge gains in horsepower, that's what keeps you going, a modded X5 just can't push through the air that much faster than a stock X5. FYI-the last 5-10 mph of a top speed would take 3 or more miles which is after you have probably traveled more than a mile. Not many places where you can find that long a stretch, let alone smooth enough or straight enough or cop free or without traffic to let it all hang out without getting in big trouble, killing yourself and/or somebody else. |
