The black box with the barcode on it is the module. You can see how it's a bit of a bear to access:

Here's a shot from the back of the engine looking forward. You can see the glow plug connector and the same barcode from above:

Does the glow plug module have to be mounted? Reason I am asking: It's clearly a PITA to get too, wonder if I can just unplug the round connector + large connector and somehow just wiring in/plug in the new one without having to take the old one out. Does that make sense?

I believe it is grounded and heatsunk through the case. It would have to be mounted somewhere.

The real issue is the harness leads are only about 6" long.

Maybe I am just being lazy and looking for a way out  Just thought I could unplug the electrical plugs and plug it into the new unit. Mount the module somewhere else (or zip tie it for all I care)

Honestly, by the time you get the old one unplugged, you're 90% done. It's not worth halfassing it at that point.

I did the same thing a couple of years back.

Since I had just filled the cooling system back up from the thermostat job, I was determined to do it without removing that pipe. It worked out, but it probably cost me more time than it saved.

Finally got around to clearing the check engine light. Only stored codes were glow plug 1 and 6. The module should have fixed that, but now my wife is telling me it came back on today.

Unless it was actually plug 1 and 6 :D

#1 was replaced just before I bought it.

If there's an issue, I guess it would be #6 as that code was in the "permanent trouble codes". I wonder if its burnt out, or if the connector is corroded.
