LCM Troubles

Hi guys,

First time posting. My '06 4.4 had some water get into the LCM and as expected it has given up on me. New units being as expensive as they are, I'm interested in buying a used one.

I know about the storage of data on the LCM and the redundancies with the Kombi, but I have read that any used unit can be coded to what ever you like it to (VIN and Mileage). Is this true? My mechanic uses GT1, but I've heard that it can be done with NCSExpert. If it is true and you can code a used part to your vehicle (without the tampering dot come up), will GT1 be able to do it?

Wanting to get this fixed ASAP so I thought I'd ask the people in the know.

Thank you.

Yes, it can be done, easiest way is with PA Soft, make sure your used one has a sticker with info, you'll need to input the specific algorithms from the used unit, then you'll be able to match put your mileage and VIN easy- also , find a 2006 , seeing as yours is a 2006, just to be sure; send me a PM and I'll send you exact details on how to do it.

Somebody on one of the boards actually had opened a LKM and did on the board repairs. He had posted pics of the internals with labels on the output FET's(?) and showing his repair.

Spunbearing has an issue where his arcing tail lamp blew the driver IC in the LCM - thread is here: -

Thank you wpoll for bringing to our attention this possible reason for the LCM failure; as I'm going to try and put in another (used) LCM for the OP, and I'm now thinking that a tail light arcing is more likely to be the cause of the failure, or at least that should be corrected before putting in another LCM; cheers

Hey guys.

So we installed and coded a used a LCM and it has solved most of the issues (thanks again DeepBlonde!), but now the Xenons are refusing to work for longer than 10 seconds at which point they flicker and turn off. The car then throws a Lowbeam error message as well as a tail light error (even though they are working). This only happens when the motor is on. Headlights are fine if the engine is off.

Unfortunately the odometer tampering light has presented itself too, despite the coding. I feel that could be the least of my worries at the moment though.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Sounds like you didn't code the used lcm correctly...and possibly missed one or more of the 6 data points that must be followed to allow the lcm & IKE to communicate. All 6 points in the redundant data info must be met and/or adressed.

For example, the tamper dot illuminates when the VINs coded to the LCM & IKE don't match (data point #1). The LCM also must be coded to the options the car has. If your car had xenon but the used LCM came from a car with halogens...the the low beam cold check is still coded on...which will cause the check low beam warning to illuminate until you turn your xenon headlights on.

The day after the OPs last post (last month) we got to the bottom of all the LCM issues:

Xenon's working perfectly!

Tamper dot removed!

All error messages now gone!

It may have been when I first tried to code the used LCM the voltage was too low (about 11 volts) and the motor was being repaired at the time , so we couldn't start it to really see if everything was ok;

It's a very nice, clean e53 4.4i e53
