Sometimes this blower resistor can cause battery issues, by keeping you blower running. If its faulty.

I will keep an eye on it to see how low the battery voltage goes over the next few days as she has been sitting in the garage and I work from home...

The fan I am referring to is the one internal to the IHKA and not the blower motor. This goes out as soon as the x5 goes to sleep...

EDIT - all the following still applies, but I now re-read your post and wonder if you are not talking about that mysterious little dot at all, but are referring to "This goes out" as the fan behind that going off. ???

So that little white dot at the right end of the lowest line there ... that's a light?

Having a direct sleep indicator would be nice so I went out just now to check on my 2001 3.0i, hoping I also had this. I do have that little dot, but could not get that light to turn on (if it's a light). I did confirm the other things ...

the orange LED next to P on the shifter was lit before I touched anything, even though the car has not been touched for about two days. Red alarm clown nose was flashing as it should.

My dash cam was off, since it is powered by a circuit that is turned off by the 16-minute sleep timer. From this, and the fact that my battery is always good, I infer that it is in sleep mode.

I clicked the remote entry unlock button, and that woke up the dash cam, indicating to me that the car is no longer in sleep mode.

Orange P shift indicator LED stayed on throughout (it never goes out unless the battery is disconnected).

The little HVAC light never came on, even after turning the car ON, adjusting some HVAC stuff, etc. Do I need to turn on AC with the compressor running, or anything like that, or is it an optional feature, or should it be lighting and my bulb may be out?

The hvac light doesn't come on. The orange shifter light comes on as soon as the car is unlocked or a door is opened and goes out after 16 minutes of the last door being opened or wake up of the car...

If the orange light next to the shifter never goes out, the car is not going sleep....

I would check the left rear where the NAV was to confirm you don't have the TCM. The PO might have left it in there. It's down low. A rectangular silver metal box with, I think, three wire plugged into it. Or you can pull the fuse for it. I can't remember the number. If you do have it, that will kill the power to it.

Incorrect. When wifes FSR failed all speeds worked, it didn't run when car off I think I just used my fuse plug ammeter to discover high drain on that circuit.

I don't know about you, but I am not talking about BMWs in general, or all E53s, or even how my particular E53 is supposed to be working. I am talking about how my 2001 3.0i E53 is actually working.

I know that for my car, after 16 minutes, some circuit voltages are killed abruptly and total current draw drops to near zero. I'll consider this sleep. And I know that my orange light never goes out unless the battery is disconnected.

From what I've read (and am therefore less certain about), I am not the only one with an E53 acting like this. I do not doubt at all that on many cars the orange light goes out.

I have enough test equipment and knowledge to know not to worry about this, so I'm posting my experience just in case someone else who does not have the capability to double check things sees these absolute declarations here and believe they must be true.

I generally try to report with certainty about my own car, and with less certain expectations about anything else, based on owners manual, service manual, stories I've heard, etc., usually waiting until I see that nobody else jumps in with good info. And when I do so, I generally try to make clear whether I am reporting on something I have actually done or measured on my own car, or that I read it in the Bentley, or that I have read intertube reports about it. Trying to keep fact from fiction.
