N62B48 Replacement Engines...

Hey all,

I did a quick search, but as is common, the clutter makes it very hard to get a simple answer.

I am looking to rebuild an N62B48 for my 2006 4.8iS and there seems to be a dramatic difference in price between the 750i 4.8L (still advertised as an N62B48) and the one in the 2004-2006 X5. Is there a mechanical difference? Could it be a bolt pattern or spacing thing for use of AWD?

Thanks in advance, hopefully this is an easy topic to close!

As far as I know all remaining N62 4.8iS engines used in the e53's were bought by Morgan motors in the UK leaving the newer engines as the only available. I don't know about the bolt patterns but I believe the smog reduction systems don't mate up.

N62B48 Replacement Engines...

I'm about to make your year:

https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...n-x5-750i.html

Somebody recently put a 750 motor into an X5 and detailed all the differences and how to overcome the issues related.

The best part is it was even 4.8 variety

"Don't match up" as in: I cannot swap parts across engines?

My ticker has already had its valve seals done and STILL smokes. I'm about to do the scotchbrite trick to get it to pass inspection. I would love another engine and transmission rebuilt and ready to swap in because I think these SUVs are amazing with their engines being the sole major issue. I feel like a rebuilt and improved N62 swapped in would dramatically increase the value of this thing as, everywhere else, my car is in great shape.

So, is there anything I can do to swap in the readily-available N62B48's from 750 and 550 BMWs?

Told you: "make your year". That thread is four months old. The hard part was to find the post: xo search engine is horrible.

Fortunately duck to the rescue:.

xoutpost 750 engine swap x5

That was my search string found the thread top result.

Lucky for you I usually read all new threads in e70 and e53 forum so I saw that thread and remembered it.

So you just need to follow the cookbook I think you are well on your way to getting a much newer engine into that 4.8 and reset the clock and add many years.

I am very big on repair vs. replace so I'm very much behind your project.

Awesome. I was under the impression that it wouldn't mate up in the e53 because the emission crap was set up for the e70.

A good amount of things needed reworking but nothing insurmountable.

Reminds me of when I put a 7 series SAP into my wife's e53 because they are far easier to find at a junk yard.

When looking at the work required to make a later N62 4.8 work in the X5, I can't help but wonder if it would be easier to put N62B44 heads on an N62B48 block.

Some further info:
https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...-swap-question

Basically, you need an intake X5 N62 donor to make this work. Whether your current one is usable, or you buy a 4.4 to combine.
