My '01 3.0 whistles upon initial acceleration but stops at about 5mph; I don't know if it whistles while driving on the highway, but I do know that it does it when I'm pulling out of the driveway but stops very quickly after about 5mph. Should I check my air boot too?

Thats the noise, slow speed and acceleration, I have had it for about a year, Mine was obvious and seemed to be getting worse. Let me know if yours is the boot as well. My wife is happy, she hated the noise more than I did.

This problems has been plaguing me for years. The dealer tells me he sees it "all the time" and claims it's normal for most 6 cyl bimmers. I'm going to my garage to check it out right now...
Edit: I checked it out and couldn't find any cracks where you had mentioned. This noise is driving me I-N-S-A-N-E, and what's worse is the shop foreman at my local dealer claims it's normal for most all 3.0i's. If it's normal, then it's a desing flaw. These cars shouldn't make this noise. Does anyone have any other info on this issue? I'm really losing my patience and am about to take it to a independent shop to take the air intake piece by piece to see what the issue is. P.S. - The dealer claims it's turbulence in the air box or the throttle body. Anyone hear of this before? I just snapped these photos for better reference. ![]() ![]() ![]()

My X5 makes the same annoying whistle.
Below is my original thread http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...whistling.html After this thread was original posted, I had my local dealer and an independent shop inspect my air boot. Both acknowledged that the air boot has surface cracks only and not leaking. They also clam the whistle is normal or common with the 3.0 X5 and coming from the intake manifold.

i get the whistling too...its seems believable that this could be normal because so many ppl have the issue but then when i think about it how the hell could a BMW, "the ultimate driving machine" have such a terrible sound...just talkin about it now is pissing me off, that piercinggggg shriek of a whistle. i think its embarrassing to be driving an X5 with that noise coming from it and the more i hear about it the more i think the dealer just downplays it...
anyway, ill be checking the air boot too. I pray to God that this will solve my problem cuz im gettin heated...

It maybe common, but not all X5 have it. Since the boot replacment on my X5 I have not heard the sound. I do have a sucking sound when I shut the car down and the dealer said that was normal. I found that sound also, common maybe... but not normal. These things BECOME normal because they are not getting fixed.
The standard answer is "Normal" ... and so far everything I bothered to bring to the dealer on CPO was "NORMAL". I finally stopped waiting my time and I fixed the stuff myself. |
