Thanks man. Hopefully it won't come to that, but I will certainly PM you if I can't get it done here in Chicago, or in St. Louis on my way back home.

When asked to change SA, do so with the new code.

Then do the same with EWS
and recode the ZKE/GM module, and the LCM module.

Killcrap also says that Perillo BMW in the City of Chicago is also capable of getting the job done.

So the total cost to have the rear self leveling retrofitted with coil springs was $735. $400 for parts, $205 for an indy to install, and $135 for the dealership to reprogram.

FWIW, not all BMW dealerships are created equal. The dealership near my home in Springfield, MO had the X5 for a full week and finally threw in the towel (thankfully at no charge to me). Laurel BMW had my car for a full day, since they had to wait for a "service order" from BMW headquarters in order to do the job. Killcrap could probably corroborate if that is standard procedure or not.

the technican had to request the ZCS code from BMW North America. "service order" is the incorrect name. On E53, the car has ZCS coding. The newer cars have "vehicle order" which is much simplier to modify. The vehicleorder/zcs is loaded the same way. But requires a IBAC code from BMW to import this code, the older systems such as CIP/Progman and DisV44 can load the vehicle order without this IBAC code. If you would of came downtown at Perillo, they wouldnt need to ask BMW NA for this code, as they have the capability to generate the modified ZCS code. You would of been done in less than 5 mintues. While your coffee was still being made.

Wow, very interesting info. So what does Perillo have that the others don't? This is good information for others on this board btw!

Do you have any insight as to why the lead tech at my dealership in Missouri was unable to complete the job? I would assume that he had the necessary equipment, but not the knowhow?

One last question, if for some odd reason I need coding work or some other similar work done on my car, do I need to worry about the self leveling error coming back?

Perillo BMW has the knowhow. Thats all you need to know. Stop reffering to someone as the lead tech. No one knows what that is. And one could only guess why they couldnt perform the modification.

Why didnt you ask Laurel about it before you left?

I did ask Laurel, and their response was that their shop foreman was "dialed in" and very sharp. I was just so ecstatic about having the job done that I didn't ask any more questions.

I was able to speak to what was referred to as the "master tech" at the Springfield, MO dealership and he thought that I would have better luck getting the job done by an independent shop. It appears from jst2878's post that it would not have been possible for an indy to get this done without the help of you or someone else affiliated with BMW.

For $135 I would suggest to others planning on doing this mod to simply plan on getting the job done at their local dealership. If you happen to live anywhere near Chicago, even better.

Help. I removed my air suspension earlier this year. I went to my local Dealer, in NJ, who checked with BMW NA, and BMW NA said it can't be done. I showd the shop foreman this thread and he pretty much said that for liablility reasons, they won't help me since BMW NA said no. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
