If you want the looks, with only a small decrease in performance, then the Centric Stoptech is an option. It is a Centric Premium, which is a good quality rotor, but then it is drilled and/or slotted. Centric note that it is not recommended for demanding applications as it has reduced performance over their Centric Premium rotor, due to the stress risers and reduced thermal mass.

The high end Porsche ones are cast that way, and then drilled to finish them up. You won't likely find rotors for the X5 that are cast with holes, as they are all using inexpensive blanks and then drilling them.

Interesting, I didn't realize some were cast and then drilled to clean/finish them up.

FWIW, try looking at Stillen.com for x-drilled rotors. I have them on my son's Civic Si, my wife's Lexus GS300 and am looking at a pair for my 06 4.8is. Zero issues and several years use.

Thanks guys, the Stillen's look great - $800 bucks isn't as much as I was thinking they would be. These go on my list to research when I need to get brakes, I still have a fair amount of pad left at 44k miles. I'd guess I'll get 50k out of them. I have some other projects going on or I'd probably pull that schedule forward and pop for them (assuming all checks out ok with them) and pads now. Trying to keep the vehicle projects and cash outlay on a serial path, I've done things in parallel a few times and the mechanical work gets stacked up. |

I believe I read that there is a better release of gas or that it doesn't have a place to build up. Regardless of these claims, I can't imagine that normal or even very spirited street driving will benefit much from cross drilled or slotted. Going to the track I'm assuming one could benefit greatly with more agressive pads, higher performance fluid and stainless lines. My goals are to not lose street performance and have a great look. Thanks for the advice, I'll be digging into the research a bit more as time progresses. I enjoy reading technical information (not on everything) to learn the fundamentals of cars/vehicles. |
