Not likely - certainly not here NZ and I think Aussie is the same. You buy something, you own it (unless it's faulty).

I just finished the second of week of road trips in the X. Last week was about 12 hours round trip and this week was about half that. By some miracle, the X didn't even throw a code at me, not even once! It seems to be driving better than ever. Last night I got home and went to sleep and immediately had a nightmare that the X broke down on me in the middle of nowhere.

Watch out though after you get home! That when mine likes to take a crap on me. Last year my wife and I drove it to Asheville and back and it behaved like it was brand new. The day after getting home it died in the grocery store parking lot. I am grateful though that she didn't take a dump on the highway somewhere in the middle of the night.

Pretty sure the prior owner did not do long trips. When I started using it to go to my camper which is about 800 miles round trip, it threw multiple codes and twice went into limp mode for reasons I still don’t understand, to the point that I keep an Ancel BMW-specific OBD reader/reset device in it. But the last three trips, nada. Runs great, no codes, though I could really use an actual overdrive gear vs the 1:1 5th because she gets kinda noisy much over 75mph. At almost 200,000mi she does use about a liter of oil every 1500mi or so which is not bad at all. I might even drive it to Mexico next spring if it keeps behaving well. Atlanta to Puerto Vallarta is about 34 hours of driving though.

Yep, I keep my Foxwell in the glove box at all time! And my fluke DMM too for good measure.

What codes did you get? Limp mode for me was caused once from a loose alternator power nut, (fell off the connector got so hot it glowed) twice from transmission connector getting water in it and once had a long time issue with each of our cars with random cylinder misfires. Mine was plugs hers was a bad coil and dirty injectors.

Just had the battery replaced, no fun getting off an 8-hour flight to find a dead car... fortunately it starts without problems again

I do have a tapping noise at cold starts... am I correct to suspect vanos (solenoids?) or chain tensioners? (I have a 4.6is). The chain was done about 40k km ago... so I hope they changed the tensioners too, but the bill is not too specified.

Tap for 5-10 second pretty normal. Rattle is tensioner related.

Tap on cold start is usually cam followers filling up and it's fairly harmless at idle to tap the cam.

Share a recording.

Loose tensioner is the main cause of chain guide failure on M62. They can go 300-400,000 miles if you change the tensioner often enough. If you can't confirm I'd change with OEM tensioner

If I recall it was an ABS error, both times, along with AUC sensor error once (since replaced, and it works now).

Has not recurred in months.
