Damn guys great job. When mine fails. I am going to do this as well. Hope I have enough patience to write something by each pic. I had a hard time following this, but I am more of a hands on guys, so unless I have done, or doing whats in the pics, I just don't seem to get it.
Can someone explain to me why you have those circle with a bar on top tool? Do you have to press the collar down do release it? Is that the issue? Other than that, what an excellent job and thread. Phil, I hope you are around when it comes down to me tearing mine apart. |

OK, now it's my turn. Thanks to everyone here I had the courage to rebuild my spare transmission that has 125k KM on it. I bought the overhaul kit including the friction plates and the VB kit.
This tranny had a delay engaging in D but other than that that it worked very well. I thought of using this thread since it has a lot of good pictures and comments. Here are my findings: The bearing below that is missing a needle actually has all the needles but they fall off if the bearing is flipped over. The bearing race is fine but I am wondering if this is normal or I should replace it. I am not sure but I think civdiv had a similar issue. ![]() An o-ring broken as RDM08 ![]() The pads from the B clutch hub seem worn comparing with the pics from Phil. Should I replace the hub? ![]() ![]() Does this opening look alright?

Florin, congrats, you're making headway. Needles should not fal out of the race IMO. So, I'd replace those. Not sure about the tabs, I would not be bothered by some wear on them kowing that I'd fixed the source of that problem.

Thanks Louis. Is this the same bearing you replaced? What did you improvise for clutch springs?
Although I might end up using pipes as civdiv I would like something like Phil's tools. I have a friend that might be able to make these. What is the inner diameter for each ring?

Did I find the right part number for that bad bearing?

I'll email you the ZF part catalog. I am not certain about the part number but if I did it again I would simply replace them all.
I don't remember the sizes of ring you need for each release spring but if you can get your hands on some scrap exhaust pipe pieces (an inch or two is enough) you'd be able to use that with a small drill press. I used pvc easy to modify but a bit soft and a bit clumsy.
