i can understand it being the mounts if I were experiencing other vibrations across different portions of the rpm band and not just stopped idling while the transmission is in drive. mounts are on my list though |

Try this, turn on AC while idling in drive. Assuming your AC works, your idle will increase just slightly, and I bet the vibration will get just slightly less.

If we throw some more physics into this: As you increase the rpm (frequency of each firing cylinder) the period between cylinders will be reduced...that's why you don't feel it through higher rpm's.
It's like increasing a blinking light to the point that it appears solid (even though its just blinking at a rate beyond what the eye can differentiate as on and off).

Failed motor mounts are easy to check for, but I would be looking for vacuum leaks first, and then at the idle control valve, especially on the 3.0. It raises idle speed, and many posters above seem to have too low an idle speed when in drive.

I've recently purchased a 2004 3.0i and am wondering if anyone has been able to actually fix this problem? I've plugged in a scanner and it hasn't pulled any codes. The car drives perfectly with no issues other than a loud vibration at idle.
If I blip the throttle to 700 rpm (idles around 600 rpm) the vibration will instantly go away. I'm stumped. I've checked the mounts and they are fine. Ideally, I'd like to just raise the idle by 50rpm. That would be the easiest solution. Does anyone know if the BMW scanner 1.4.0 can adjust idle? |

Just for information, the TD6 version of the L322 Range Rover (obviously a very close relative of the E53) was only ever available with 18” wheels because larger wheels (as fitted on petrol models) caused the driveline to oscillate in Drive when stationary. This was a torsional vibration issue related to the inertias and stiffnesses in the driveline. I just wondered if any of you started having the problem when you changed to bigger wheels?

on some of the earlier model that was doing this the bmw dealer use the software to bring up the rpm just a tad. then with the newer models they couldn't they told the customers that it was a know problem with no fix. i'm leaning more towards the AIC=air idle control solenoid.
why because i just did a head gasket on my 02 3.0i never had that issue.while it was apart i clean out the AIC and the throttle body put vehicle back together and from the moment i start it up took it for a ride bamm the idle vibration started.when i put my scanner to check rpm is fluctuating from 598 to 689 to 705.just my 2 cents Last edited by 1iwilly; 06-14-2014 at 07:27 AM. |

It should be relatively stable in and around 700rpm....if it's fluctuating by 100rpm you definitely have other issues goin on.
