paint or vinly wrap for peeling steering wheel trim

hello all, Ok got a dilemma, will be removing the peeling flaking steering wheel trim of my sports steering wheel, but not ordering a new one as am worried it is the same useless quality as the original, so have the option to either wrap it is 3m dinoc or the 1080 scotchprint, but reading numerous reviews have see that this stuff will not hold up to high temps in the cabin and out here we often get temps over 100F …So only option is to repaint trim, due the limited supplies of paint ranges here, all I can get hold of is rustoleum primer for plastics and rustoleum painters touch paint satin black(says is suitable for most plastics), anyone know if this is any good?:

RUST-OLEUM Painters Touch Satin Black

RUST-OLEUM Painters Touch Satin Black
Manufacturer's Description

This beautiful satin blank paint is part of the Painter's Touch range from Rust-Oleum. This multi purpose paint is ideal for everyday projects inside and outside the house. The spray provides stunning decoration and rust protection on most surfaces.
Easy to use, fast dry and produces a perfect finish every time. The coating is UV absorbent, tough, hard wearing, water resistant and will not fade or yellow. More paint in the can ensures the Painters Touch range typically covers 50% more than the majority of other spray paints on the market.

I bought new trim for my steering wheel. The old was flaky, as usual.
The old trim felt very fragile and rubber like, but the new trim is more of a matte, "dry" finish and it doesn't feel fragile at all.
But what do I know. Maybe the original trim also felt like this when new, but started deteriorating after a few years.

If you still decide to paint it, be sure to rub it down with fine grit sand paper, so the paint have something to stick to. And clean the trim very well with alcohol (or a paint thinner that doesn't attack plastic). Just think about all those years with fingers rubbing finger-fat into the plastic.

thanks rolfi, current trim hasn't flaked it just rubs off, covered by some useless rubbery coating.....as for rubbing finger fat yup, and also hands covered in say sun -tan cream and other oils, either way totally unacceptable that this rubs off, should just have been solid plastic no paint

I used Matte Black Krylon Fusion to refresh the trim of my old sport wheel trim, no sanding necessary and looks pretty close to OEM. (Just an alternative)

DTMdan thanks, this is quite a mission, I found someone in the uk who sells the stuff (i think it has very high VOc content etc and has been banned from sale in the uk), and it is the ultra flat matt black camouflage krylon , I am sure it will do...BUT its out of stock.....anyway not the end of the world

I don't know...I spent like $45 on a new piece and it took me about an hour to replace. I think I'd be willing to do a replacement a couple of times before I fooled around with paint or wrap.

Unless you did it with the trim still on the wheel, you still have to take off the old trim piece, and that's what takes the time. Putting on the new one is about five minutes of the work.

And while I can't guarantee it, it looks to me like the new piece is made differently. I think it may not have the flaking problem the original did. Good luck.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
For the 40 bucks the new piece costs, I'd just get a new piece than mess with vinyl or painting.

I painted the lower steering wheel trim to match the upper portion. I used Rustoleum spray paint for outdoor metal furniture because it was the closest match. I had it that way for about 2 years before I upgraded my trim. Couldn't tell it was painted and still looked like the day it was painted when I removed it.

Just wrap it.. I paid $4 shipped for a 1'x1' 3M piece of vinyl off eBay which is plenty for the steering wheel trim. The vinyl is actually very forgiving.

thanks for AALL the replies, Funnily enough rustoleum i can get hold of out here, bcredliner did you prime the surface first? yup 40bucks is good, but when i tell you the same thing costs 100 out here makes me think twice about buying a new bit of trim, ok my next discovery may seem a bit extreme but i am calling the rep out here tomorrow, to see if it can work on the trim and if the price is not prohibitive may go for it
