Honestly, I don't know a damn thing about it! PO had his crap indie put it in. Its a nice setup, but probably not worth what he paid. Its a nice look over stock but its installed so badly I'm surprised the truck runs sometimes. I will get a pic of it and maybe you can tell me if its the dry or oiled. I think the filter itself is red in color.

Send me a pic, afe filters shouldn't be red. I'm afraid to see.

10 bucks says he ghetto rigged a k&n cone filter on there. K&n doesn't make an intake for our car

I believe it to be a real aFe intake. There was an aFe license plate frame in the car. It has the powdercoated metal cone surround that fits in the grooves of the actual air box and clips in. I will get a pic in the morning.

Kinda doubt it since someone mention that the PO was a cheap ass. So why would a Cheap Ass spends 3 Benjamin Franklins on an air filter plus another Benjamin Franklin to have it installed?

After just reading this entire thread, I gotta say I'm impressed! Having gone through what you've been through, so many other people would have either been bashing BMW ad nauseum, or would have given up on the car and gone back to whatever rice burner they had before. BRAVO!

and BTW...

Once you get into working on that sweet lil 3 litre, let us know if you need any help...

Sarcasm aside, the PO was a cheap-ass. I intend to do a full coolant flush along with my other maintenance in the Spring. Trans, diff, transfer case fluids. I haven't mentioned it yet but I have an aFe intake. but it needs a new cabin filter BAD! Fuel filter and plugs if they look old. same old, same old.

This is the Pro 5R (oiled) filter from AFE. I'm sure after some cleanings its not as blue, but definitely not red.

I have the Pro Dry S filter pictured below.

Its gray because its not oiled. My intake does not have the magnum force sticker, it used to have the AFE emblem on the front edge but it fell off.

If a filter is liked with K&N's oil it becomes "red" I made a not red not really brown blue filter once.

Looks aFe to me. appears to be white (dirty as hell!), so dry filter. Is this something you would generally try and save or just replace at a certain point?
