HELP!! 4.8is Won't Start. Asking For Code

I looked through the search fields and didn't find a issue similar to mines.

My navi screen is white.. I purchased my e53 that way. The buttons don't work other than the volume knob. Today I went to start the e53 and it asked for code and won't start.

1st issue is I don't know the code and dealer is saying I need to bring truck in to program radio to car.

2nd issue is that my screen is white.

Is there a way to bypass this am I missing something .??

Tks in advance folks

radio has nothing to do with the code... there is a procedure involving time-out to start the engine without the code... takes about 15 minutes for the time out...

i will try to dig it but you can try to look for it too...

If the nav screen is white (aka nothing appears?)...how can you see the prompt for the code? Or is white the background color chosen for the screen? Will the OP be able to read the prompts or time counter?

This could also be slightly different issues, too...there is the anti-theft CODE which works in conjunction with EWS...then there's a code scenario when a nav monitor is replaced but not coded correctly or fails.

Hmmm...this appears to be a 2 bagger...I await the conclusion...

BTW..the emergency deactivation of the CODE is either in the owners manual or in the Nav manual (or MID manual if so equipped). Since it could be an anti theft situation...posting the directions to defeat it may not be the wisest thing to do...when the owner normally has the manuals & booklets that explain the procedure.

FYI...if you don't have either of these manuals...a downloadable PDF version is only a google search away.

The navigation screen is completely blank in white..
The inboard computer display on the instrument cluster says code and the radio doesn't work..

The radio was working before and I contrôlée the radio stations from the steering wheel controls.. But this morning it stop working and the CODE display came up on the cluster.

Wow...you're in a real pickle...I do believe you need to see the nav screen.. It is the display for the OBC...the display in the cluster belongs to the check control system...and although you can program the OBC to appear in the display...it cannot control/set/reset/start/stop any of its functions. All of that is done by the controls on the nav monitor (or MID if optioned).

Its been mentioned several times (about the owners manual & downloadable PDF versions of it)...but you haven't said anything as to if you have them. Get the instructions for emergency activation of the OBC CODE...perform it, then see if it brings the nav screen back or if you can see the prompts it gives you in the check control display (cluster display).

EDIT: you need to find the section below in your owners manual...but turn to the next page (or whatever page it refers you to) for emergency deactivation procedure:

the screen is white...
the OE screen is by default is black when it is not energized (well, kind of black - it is dark). For the screen to be white, it means, there is some reaction from the screen to the applied power. if the screen reacts to the applied power but does display an image of the menu (or any other standard image generated by the nav comp), that may mean that the nav computer is either not connected or malfunctioning.

This is all running on assumption that the original factory set up in the car was not altered.

DSM, can you tell us the status of your issue - have you been able to start the engine? can you elaborate on your nav setup?

No luck.... My main worry is... Is the the x5 not starting because I'm not putting in the code? What does the radio code have to do with the x5 not starting..

I'm going to buy a used head unit from a friend tonight. Hopefully it works.
Just curious.... After I put the other code.. When code do I put in? The code from the new radio or the old one?

i think BMWs have gotten away from using the codes for the radio... i need to check into that... since your engine is not starting and the cluster says code, you need code for the engine to start, the SECURITY CODE...

when you try to start the engine with the code activated, the main screen has a 4-digit display asking for a code, you enter the numeric code using the main knobs, and after entering the last digit, you press the "DEACTIVATE" button the screen, using the main knobs... at this point, you turn the ignition key to engage the starter, or, if your key was in position 2 when you realized that you needed the code, you turn the key off, and turn it on again... engine starts...

with no code available, you only have the timeout method...

do you presently have ORIGINAL screen that is blank (you say white, give us more info about it), or you have aftermarket screen? it is imperative to know what you have now, to avoid throwing money for the parts that you don't need...

if you have aftermarket monitor, the question is whether the original plugs and harnesses are intact or have been "molested"

if you have original monitor, is it "white" because the nav computer is dead, or for some other reasons...

if it is original monitor and the nav comp is ok, then you might need a replacement monitor...

can you answer all of these questions, to narrow down the path of the remedy?
