To all the members of this thread... I would like to formally apologize for feeding the troll. I was sucked in and have been going around and around in a futile attempt to reason with someone who has made up their mind about something and closed it.

To paraphrase the omniscient Ace Ventura: I prostrate myself before you fellow members and beg thy forgiveness.

I appreciate your effort. It's good to challenge ignorance when someone is trying to spread it around.

If you think youi're going to notice some difference from what is probably less than 1/8HP difference, you're kidding yourself. If you think you notice it, it's like someone taking a placebo energy pill and thinking they suddenly are all pepped up. And then you're making up for the airflow with an electric fan? So, the alternator is loading the engine, making electricity, then driving the motor, and this is a good thing compared to a direct drive fan?

You BMW guys are a strange bunch. You buy these cars because of the alleged great Geman engineering. Then you tear it apart and try to re-invent the wheel. Two of the aux electric fans have failed in the X5 here so far. The original mechanical fan, it's still running.....
This is your first post to my thread. It is clearly trolling. We are now close to 30 posts later of the same content delivered in the same manner. I suggest you change your name from Trader4 to Troller4U. I know what you can do to be constructive--go away.

Sorry, but facts are facts and some things like the above are among
the most basic.

As to 30 posts later, I notice you're still here too, despite having
claimed to have put me on ignore, do not respond, etc.
I can't help myself. I have this inherent weakness that even the hopeless can be saved from themselves. I'm one of those strange BMW guys.

FYI-you're mixing up who said what.

Well, at least I am not the only one guilty of feeding the troll.

I've given up... I tried to have a 2-way communication but that wasn't happening. I presented examples... and was just retorted with... "that's wrong." Ummm... okay then. He either misconstrues a statement/supposition or refuses to use it in the context intended. Either way, there is no talking to someone who is ignorant or has a closed mind... whichever the case is here, it's not worth it.

It's wrong to claim that because the engine is doing other
work, ie powering the drivetrain, that effects the power required to
run the fan. It's wrong to claim that a benefit of an electric fan is
that it's going to increase the amount of time it takes for the car to overheat if the WP belt comes off. Just the facts.
You have posted nothing to support any of those claims of "fact."

You are assuming that the same amount of air being forced into the front of the car @ the radiator is the same amount of air that reaches the mechanical fan. I doubt that considering it has to go through the grille, aux fan, condenser, radiator, and shrouding. I never said NO air reaches the fan, just that it is not the same amount of air as the front of the car.

I have had a WP belt fail on my m42 turbo car with my electric fan... and trust me... moving air over the engine will buy you a few minutes. A few minutes can be the difference between a popped head gasket and pulling over somewhere to cool off the car. Again, where the electric fan can stay on with the engine off to speed up the cooling process.

Like I said... you asked a question and we tried to provide you an answer. But you have already decided you KNOW the answer to the question you asked. This leaves a couple of issues. 1. NOTHING we tell you will satisfy you because we are not engineers and cant show you the math. 2. A discussion is impossible because you have made up your mind already. It's like talking to a Jehovah's Witness.

And out of curiosity why do you posts come out in those weird stunted paragraphs? Is it the device you are posting on that does that?

And we're full circle from almost exactly a year ago, 8/2014.

Seems you are right... on all counts. Didn't realize he was trolling this thread so hard. And yes, it was a shot at Trader, not any particular religion.

Like I said earlier, he is either misinterpreting things or intentionally using them out of context. Either way he is not able or not willing to listen to someone who has worked at a European shop and has worked on BMW's since he was able to drive. Has real world experience on the subject being discussed. And has dynos to show gains after removing the parasitic fan/clutch assembly. So it's like talking to a wall.

Are there no mods here? Someone who could kindly ask Trader to abstain from posting in a thread he is not only being detrimental to, but also asking for something we can not provide him. We've already conceded there is nothing wrong with the mechanical cooling setup should you wish to stay with that. This thread is about changing to an alternative method of cooling. Some consider it an upgrade and come here for information on doing so.
