yes, vanos is a much different animal on the N62. however, CPS is almost always related to something else. If you swtich them tho and the code switches banks also, that could be a bad sensor.

i would get INPA up and running and see what BMW specific codes it is throwing.

another thing to check is the screen under your lower oil pan. I've seen a few threads where car is throwing odd codes. Ends up being oil distribution issue. But I wouldnt start there. Id start with getting a more specific code.

never hurts to clean the vanos solenoids tho

I am at work right now and have no way to search. Is there any link you could point me to, or any information you could give me to help with this process? Are there any O-rings or gaskets that I will need to replace when I take things apart to clean the vanos solenoids?

Also, what is INPA? Just another software tool like PA Soft?

I ordered the iSaddle BMW Scanner and I plan on hooking it up also when I get home. (Just arrived today). Is this sufficient for what you are refering to?

This is a link to the BMW INPA and DIS software many of us purchase: BMW USB OBD Diagnostic Cable Inpa Ediabas NCS Expert Dis V57 SSS V32 GT1 Progman | eBay

It is the same software used by the dealer. Note that the software takes a lot of memory. It is windows based and runs best on XP. Many of us have a laptop dedicated to the software. I find this software to have quite a long learning curve. There is a forum dedicated to help users and there several here that can help. I use it so seldom I never get proficient. I don't find it intuitive at all. Most the the aftermarket scanners don't read all of the codes you will need. I am not familiar with the one you purchased. I only go to reading error codes when all shade tree engineering troubleshooting is exhausted as they can be very misleading.

I suggest you purchase the Bentley BMW service manual if you plan on much DIY.

That cable came with my BMWhat package I just received... wonder if I could just load INPA or DIS on a lappy and it would work with the cable I have.

I was kinda wondering the same... I have the OBDII port to USB cable. The iSaddle thing i got from Amazon uses BMW Scanner V1.4.0

I would think it is sufficient.

I plan on posting the BMW specific codes when I get home.

The cable will work if it has USB end. Note that the recommended software package source includes a cable for the total of only $35.

Cool, and yeah that source is a good deal for sure. I was just wondering because I have the cable here already. I used BMWhat today and it was able to read the majority of the modules in the car. Was less helpful for programming but at only $53 I think I will get the full version of the software as well since it is so easy to use. It ran perfectly on the Avin Avant 2 which is nice also.

I'll see if I can find an INPA or DIS copy to try on the BMWhat cable (I imagine the pinouts for reading have to be the same).

I used the tool I got off of amazon for $30. It runs P.A. Soft. Here's what I found, 10 Errors total:

1 - 2D28 [11560] Differential airpressure, intake tube signal
2 - 2B65 [11109] Camshaft Sensor 2, Outlet
3 - 29CC [10700] Misfire, Several Cylinders
4 - 29CD [10701] Misfire Cylinder 1
5 - 29CE [10702] Misfire Cylinder 2
6 - 29CF [10703] Misfire Cylinder 3
7 - 29D0 [10704] Misfire Cylinder 4
8 - 29D1 [10705] Misfire Cylinder 5
9 - 29D2 [10706] Misfire Cylinder 6
10 - 29D4 [10708] Misfire Cylinder 8

Any Ideas? Keep in mind, I swapped Camshaft Sensors once already with the same result. It is running much better than it was before I swapped out the Coolant Temperature Sensor in the lower radiator hose which was giving me a code P2184 when I was using the AutoZone OBDII Scanner.

Thanks again to anyone and everyone for all your help,
T.J.

Also, I keep searching trying to find more information about the Vanos my 06 X5 4.4L Specifically with the N62B44 Engine in it. I have 2 questions:

1) Could anyone please share some links with what/how to repair them? I can't seem to locate anything.
2) What is the screen thing that cham was talking about below the oil pan?
