The typical part number searches return the size 49, but my car was obviously originally equipped with a group 95 battery. I would assume all of the diesels would be due to the glow plugs and additional load on the starter. My car also has the 220A alternator for the rear climate control. I wonder if that would drive the larger battery too.

If you have Rhein gold working, run the tests for the scr heaters. I've seen mine not turn off, drawing 9000ma. Funny when I reseated the connectors on the ecu it didn't draw anymore but then I got a code for it not working! Rheingold showed it not going on... Reseated again after cleaning contacts and it worked off and on. Honestly, I feel like electrical devices these days lack quality and robustness. Put that together with bmw's overly sensitive and badly tested code, brings you ghosts in the machine!

Also with that wet foam, remove it for good.... It's asking for problems with inj 5 and/or 6. Both of mine just started quitting on me to the point of stalling. One was shorted 20 ohms to ground! Check them, should be at least 500kohm or infinity to ground...

My foam is always wet too what the hell. but If you remove it doesnt that create a sound barrier?

Its not much of a difference, the hood is insulated already. I found out it was damp by accident when I did my CCV catch can re route I gave up on trimming it to fit. It's not a good thing and on the VW's the foam can catch fire... I didn't want that.

Well F me.

The alternator wasn't the issue. About the last thing I would have guessed, but the first thing I should have looked at in hindsight:

The main harmonic pulley failed. The rubber damper puked out of it and it was slipping.

Explains the symptoms I saw much better. Still wouldn't have expected a failure on a vehicle less than 10 years old. But after some research it seems slightly common. The part is stupidly expensive from the dealer. So unless they can give me a break due to the severity of the issue and how it could have killed my family, I'm going to have to go aftermarket.

how much is the oem pulley vs aftermarket?

and what silicone did you use?
my concern against using silicone is having to scrape it off an reglue it every time i need to do work in that area.

OEM is $630 from my local dealer. Aftermarket is $250.

I haven't had to unglue anything. I only closed up the cracks that shouldn't exist anyway.

I just used clear permatex.

Yeah, I already have brand new belts. I probably wouldn't have figured it out if I under been messing with installing the stretch belt.

Once you pop the 4 bolts off, does the pulley come right off? Do you need a puller?
