Broken EGR temporary fix (waiting for parts)
Hi all,
Could not find the answer to this specifically. Maybe a stupid question. Car is an 09 xdrive35d. My egr cooler just sprung a leak (cracked at the accordion). I would like to be able to use my car while I wait for parts, so in the short term, can one blank off the egr cooler without the car going to reduced power mode and throwing lots of codes? Does the delete require coding out or tuning out of the ECU? I’d like to just get it fixed, but parts generally have to come from Europe or the US unless you are willing to get a second mortgage. Thanks for any input! ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Did you try offering your local BMW dealer the same price it will cost you to order from US/EU plus shipping plus customs??? They might say OK. Or very close....worth a try.
Can't answer your question. Don't know. I wouldn't, but I have 5 vehicles.

I gave it a go, found a genuine one in Europe for $550aud including shipping and all. BMW want $1100aud after asking for a discount! Will be 3 weeks to get it in from Europe. Will be ok since I suddenly have to go overseas for 2 weeks for work.
So I guess I’ll wait. Not worth the effort to try and plug it for one week. At least now with the split it should be easy to get out ![]() 5?! I think I need to consider a second car. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

On us cars, blocking the egr only results in a service engine soon light. My understanding is eu cars are the same. You can remove the cooler with a tune. I’ve done so on my diesel instead of replacing the cooler. I had 4 fail on my car 2 at the accordion pipe. Often the accordion pipe brakes because of faulty mounting bolts for the cooler. There was a recal l at last in the us on those bolts.

I had one fail on a trip. Took it off, had a guy TIG weld it to get the X5 running again. Replaced it with a used one I got off of ebay for this specific reason. I keep the welded one on the X5 for a just in case moment.

Thanks for the input guys. Good idea about welding up the old one to keep as an emergency backup. I had considered doing the delete, but to do it legally here will probly be more expensive than just replacing it. I think it needs to be tested by EPA for emissions and approved etc. at least we don’t get the DEF system, just the EGR and DPF, they seem to be the worst part of the emissions equipment. So based on what thecastle said, seems like blocking it will work temporarily without a limp home mode and when fixed will have to clear the codes. If my parts have not come when I get back, I will test it out.

Correct blocking doesn’t result in a limp mode or any driveability issues just an annoying service engine soon light. Burger tuning used to sell a module you could plug into the car that would automatically reset an error code generated by blocking the egr.
Also blocking the egr is just plain good for these cars and it significantly reduces the diesel soot recirculated into the intake which is the major contributor to these cars coking up. It also improves fuel economy I run mine with the egr blocked but dpf and scr intact. Last edited by Thecastle; 02-26-2018 at 09:13 AM. |

Well I guess seeing this makes up my mind on if I'm going to do the EGR race pipe at the same time as the dpf delete
