Emmission Delete/Tune .....The Money Side
And how many of you that have done this "gut" did it yourself? I've done a fair amount of DIY wrenching but since this is a daily driver, don't want to get in over my head and be on the bus taking transit to work at 51 years young due to "issues". And have any of you done this is stages or just went full hog right out of the door ? |

In the US, in NY, I had the full delete and tune done for $2000 usd, including labor and tune.
DUDMD Stage 2, ATM downpipe and midpipe (no cat) bimmerworld egr race pipe (I'm blaninking on this one, I'm not positive of the brand for EGR race). Kept the factory muffler but I'm very tempted to go for an electric cutout. I didn't do swirl flaps because mine weren't leaking at the time. I'll pull the manifold off at some point and put the blanks on, but I saw no reason to pay labor have the shop do it. Long story short, after seeing it done, it's something I really appreciated paying a few hundred in labor to have done. The 335d is definitely a delete that I would've done myself, but the X5 is packaged super tightly, you need to lower the subframe a bit, remove the engine mount, and then even with that space made, getting the DPF out is a disaster. It took 2 guys like 35 minutes to get it out on a lift,, and they'd done MANY. Throwing it out there, I say this as a fairly competent home mechanic myself- I wouldnt hesitate to pull the motor or trans on my drift car, and could do it in a few hours comfortably, and changed my own clutch, oil pan, oil pump nut, etc. Suspension at this point I can do in my sleep. If you'd like the shop information I went to, I'm happy to give it to you via PM. Located in Albany NY, so kind of a trek from toronto, but I drove 3.5 hours each way there and they just spent a single day doing it. They worked on the car for about 6 hours to do everything, and the shop owner even lent me his deleted and tuned X5 so I could go visit a buddy who lives 30 mins from the shop. After a quick google, a 6 hours trip is kind of far just for a delete, but I bet you could find a really inexpensive hotel and make it a weekend trip. Truthfully, I know myself, and it might not have gotten done in a single weekend, since I had never seen it done/ done it before. It wouldve been a lot of cursing and bloody knuckles, doing it on jack stands.

Yeah my reading up of this, it's pretty much a pain in the butt. I just thought it's rather steep up here money wise although maybe I'm missing something. I think if I ever move forward with it, I'm going to definitely look into options.... but I don't think I will be wrenching this one out myself....... on my driveway..... on jack-stands........ nope.
Any regrets on having the work done? I was warned that here in Canada, if you get caught in a random check by the cops, it's really REALLY bad news. My independent mechanic said it's not worth it to do the emission delete, although he said to definitely get a tune. |

More power, more efficiency, and more reliability. PM me real quick to talk about emissions testing. Do you know what kind of testing is done during random checks for you guys? Keep in mind, unless you've got something wrong with your vehicle, it doesn't "roll coal" or anything like that. Sure, at a stop, if you huff the exhaust, you can tell it's a diesel, but you're not smoking down the road.

Just like the motor you don't want to start throwing mods on it if maintenance is up to spec. It's good practice to make sure the trans is serviced and operating as it should before flashing a more demanding tune. For most people this includes pan/filter, fluid, and bridge seal + mechatronics seals. Some add solenoids if needed.

Completely in agreement- I always presume that someone about to mod/ tune things is up to date on maintenance, but I do acknowledge that’s a strong assumption in some cases.
I did perform the full kit and kaboodle on my transmission, and it really smoothed things out. Fluid, filter, every seal in there, including dropping the mechatronics unit for the seals above it. I also installed fresh solenoids too. I did everything but a zip kit, which I almost regret not doing while everything was out. This was all a very DIY friendly job, an extra hand helped every now and then, but would’ve been fine without it. My trans will need a rebuild in another 50-100k, which isn’t that bad since it’s the original unit with 240k on it.

If there's a concern about authorities seeing mods do this:
Get the dpf gutted, keep the doc which cuts down smell. Get the scr gutted... It will clog up without dpf. Get the block off plates for the egr, not a race pipe. Get the blanking caps for the water lines that go to egr cooler. Get the tune... That's a stealth delete... |

I hear you on the $$ for a M57 tune. I have almost pulled the trigger several times now but I can't get over the total cost and the unknowns associated with what the tuners have done in the background. Some tuners disable portions of the diagnostic system. I always tune my turbos but not this time.
Then there is the looming emissions concern. The american truck coal rollers have gotten the attention of the EPA. Recently, a big tuner just got a fine in excess of $1m. This alone could scare the vendors out of business. Originally I lived in FL where emissions are non existent. But now I am in AZ where we have a visual inspection for diesels. I asked how long before they can hook up and tell if the car is compliant and the inspector said "soon".

As far as unknowns-you can talk to tuners about any questions you might have. I talked to my tuner to make sure every fault and diagnostic function would still work, and was assured that they would. I had a few other questions for him at the time, and he was happy to answer them.
Personally, a total outright cost of $2000, making my vehicle hardy for the long run, is worth it.

I would be interested in a delete at $2000 all-in. But I find as I age, I am less and less willing to delete emissions on the vehicle we use the most. Don't mind it on something I drive a couple thousand miles a year, but not on the vehicle we put our kids in and drive tens of thousands of miles/year. The diesel smell is not attractive to my nostrils either. Think I'll be stuck maintaining the alphabet soup on this one... getting an intermittent 4D16 now so... yeah.
