OK got the scan codes and uploaded he PDF.

They still can get it to stay running.

Next steps they are suggesting is to remove the valve cover and check the timing and the valvetronic

Also said that there was a recall for an issue with the Vanos on the N52N that was never done on this X5 that could be poss causing this issue

Mentioned something about bolts that loosen and a gear just spins. Found this:
BMW has informed NHTSA of its intention to voluntarily recall approximately 156,137 MY 2010-12 vehicles in the US, equipped with inline 6-cylinder engines. In very rare cases the bolts holding the variable camshaft timing (VANOS) unit housing may become loose or, in extreme cases, break.

If that be the case all this will be covered.

At this point what is known
++++++++++++++++++++++
- Oil filter housing has the cage
- Has bad CCV
- Oil is clean no shavings

Unknown
++++++++++++++++++++++
- Dirty or bad Vanos Solenoids
- Dirty VANOS Filter
- What is causing the timing issue?
- Issue with the Valvetronic ?
- ICV ?
- DISA?
- CAM Shaft Position Sensor?
- Recall
https://www.autoblog.com/2014/04/11/...es%2C%20break.

In rare cases, the bolts holding the VANOS unit housing may become loose, or, in "extreme" cases, break. A broken bolt may trigger an engine warning light or send the engine into safe mode if the VANOS unit is compromised. Ignoring the issue could cause "no start conditions," stalling and further engine damage.

PDF unfortunately didn’t open for me. I will say the list of “knowns” isn’t likely to cause your problem but of the list of “unknowns” the Vanos, ICV and Camshaft PS all could contribute. I would go as far as saying it probably isn’t the valvetronic itself - though I could be wrong - I base that on having the incorrect levers on mu car and experiencing a cold start rough idle and flashing CEL from time to time but never anything bad enough to experience a no start or start and die scenario.

Would be interested in see what all the recall covered and what that work might offset the cost of any other work while the have the engine apart.

Check that PDF

This recall thing is confusing...

if the car is recalled, it is recalled. You pull the vin, thats that- coverd or not

Are they telling you 'we need you to pay and open it up, if we find [something] the recall covers it'? Thats a lie.

Tell them to do the recall repair first at no charge. Then get the car shipped home.

The article you link to shows the range of vehicles affected. That recall is for the N55. Though they do have one for X5's with the N52 as well. But again with a much later production date. And even that, from what I've read, is only honored for 10 years.

Here's the N52 SIB (and procedure)

RCRIT-14V176-2716.pdf

What's the service history of this X5?

The history of this X5 looks clean on paper. I can trail all that was done up to the point that I bought it.

Was a local BMW lease and was returned and then BMW certified. Purchased and stayed local. Traded in to the same BMW dealer and then went to auction and purchased buy local lot where I bought it.

I have paper trail and service records from the local BMW dealer and there does not look to be any gaps in relation to the miles and service up until the point I bought it. Meaning about 100 miles from the last service at the dealer to the local lot..

There were no major repairs just basic maintenance as expected and misc replacement of wear parts as expected

The X5 is super clean in and out so figured it would be a no brainer to be a good Bimmer for at least 3 yrs....

Like I said before this is not my 1st Bimmer and experience with them and issues that arise. I am pretty capable of troubleshooting and repairing most everything myself

I have done s50 Engine/5-speed Tranny swap into my 95 E34, plumed a Garrett T5 w/6psi and stand alone management (Real Sleeper) and have maintained to without issue.

Granted most all my exp is on the Bimmer ODBI and not the ODBII. My youngest has the same year X5 with about 10k more miles and I have cut my teeth with it. Have already replaced the valve cover(CCV), cleaned Vanos solenoids/filter, replaced a failed water pump/thermostat

So basic maintenance of Bimmer ownership

So you can see my frustration with this not being able to have eyes on it an relying on a Dealership

But agree'd would be much better if I was there to oversee....

You sound capable, though e34's and m/s5x motors are a world away from n series engines. Might be cheaper to ship the truck to you and work on it. If it was a lease then it likely had 10000+ mile OCI's for the beginning of it's life. Thanks a lot BMW.

When I bought my e61 it had many of the codes yours has (but did start and run, barely) and almost the same engine (n52). Was a very neglected vehicle with a bunch of sludge on the valve train, and everywhere really. It took $3000 worth of parts to make that thing back into a daily driver. I hit it with the shotgun, 300 miles running with ATF in the engine, new plugs, new coils, complete cooling system, cleaned vanos solenoids, cleaned non-return valve, gaskets, and seals. All cleaning done after the ATF run of course. Still need to replace a newly discovered broken head bolt next to the OFHG causing a decent leak.

Now, we daily drive that vehicle and the only 2 codes left are cat efficiency codes periodically. Granted, this wagon had 183k on it when purchased so the PO's had more time to neglect it, but at 100k yours is also due for maintenance parts. How long have you owned this X5?

OK new update, service manger called me and let me know that they were able to get it running after trying to start it spraying carb cleaner.

It ran for a few minutes and then died out. So now instead of cracking the valve cover they are testing the fuel delivery system with thought that they are seeing good pressure but not getting the volume of fuel that is expected.....

get some popcorn out..

Just some pics of the X5 and the e34...

The only thing that I did not have was the ACS Fender Flares

Was able to get everything else from ACS S5 Silhouette in Germany when I was there playing BBall.

Working on an 530 e60 right now to lower it stiffen up the handling with Strut and sway bars. Currently rolling the fender to make room for the wider rims

Helluva e34. So nice. ACS Type 2's are one of my favorite wheels. Preceded only by ACS Type 3's.
