Glad to hear they were able to get it started and seeing the numerous, probably random, misfire codes it does appear the Vanos could be in play here. I went through a similar issue after doing my VSS job and accidentally swapping the Vanos plugs... don’t ask... mine would start though and surge something crazy before leveling off and wanting to stall. I pulled the Vanos and cleaned everything again and even went to the extent of pulling the valve covers and checking the timing... again... only to find it was dead on and as I was putting it back together for the third time realized the error of my ways and corrected those plugs - keep in mind mine is the N62 but very similar issue.

I’m guessing, but it could be something as simple as sludge in the oil feed passages causing slower actuation of the Vanos. Wish it was home so you could get your own hands on it...

Beautiful sedan by the way - love the stance and the wheels

That's why I posted my experience with our wagon. Hope it's something that simple for you OP, but knowing dealerships, they won't want to take the time to deal with it. Just want to replace something (vanos and/or valvetronics ).

UPDATE:
+++++++++++++++

Ok so they are confident that it is the FUEL Pump

They want $768.86 to replace and also need the Valve cover replaced and they are wanting $1232.38

$1232.38
$768.86
--------------------
2,001.24 Total

Wow....Let me bend over and grab my ankles!

Anyone know what shop hours are on the Fuel pump and Valve Cover?

Sadly I agree with that and the problem is if it’s internal gunk... that may help but may not fix the issue - which stinks. But I get it, dealerships are “parts hangers” for the most part.

I really like your wagon by the way! Always wanted one with a good stance and a something like a “Thule” bike rack (just the vertical bars not the uprights) on it or something... don’t ask me why, just something about the look.

Ouch! I’d also want something on paper that they’ve figured it out (though I doubt they’ll “guarantee” that’s 100% the issue) and aren’t just hanging parts... that said, though a bit steep... the OEM cost on the FP is staggering so I’m (almost) ok with the FP job, but the VC... I removed, installed, removed, installed and removed and installed BOTH of my VCs in just a few hours screwing with my timing... so that seems a bit steep.

I mean I know we pay for these guys experience, they earn their living doing things we can’t, don’t want to or have time to do, and I’ll never fault them for that..., but north of 1200 for the VC, seems a bit extra, in my opinion.

Ya not sure what to think I know I am no expert but I know how to troubleshoot. I really dont think that todays mechanics really know how to troubleshoot and solely are trained to rely on computers to diag instead of using it a tool assist with the troubleshooting.

My uncle was a ASE trained mechanic back in the day, he is in his 70's now and retired. Bought a Chevy Duramax to tow his 24ft trailer. Kept having issue with the turbo and the dealership kept telling him there is no issues that the scanners are picking up. Kept trying superficial bullshit hope something would stick

The 3rd time back to the dealer he had enough

He went into the shop and diag'ed right in front of them and they were like holy shit how did you do that!!

Ya just feel like I am bent over a log being 1000 miles away

But anyways thanks for everything!

Ding ding. Unfortunately.

Not that I'm an expert at diag, and I often opt for the parts canon (parts aren't THAT expensive usually). But dealer techs are experts at spending customers money at full retail pricing.

Thanks, it's certainly come a long way. Wagons are cool, what can I say.

I do agree most technicians are parts hangers today, especially at dealerships, I can’t argue there, but I have a couple of guys that I work with here close to Gahanna that are worth their weight in gold! I’ve seen these guys break out a multimeter to test the pin out on TPS and MAF units before making a guess that they are bad or taking the scanners word for it.

That said, the Xoutpost community have trouble shooting down to a science (through just sheer volume of shred experiences) for the most part - and I think that comes from a true desire to fix the problem vs just spend money and guess until it runs again.

I, like you, trust myself FAR more than anyone with my own cars .

Yea, unfortunately they probably feel like they have you over a barrel and it’s real hard to argue otherwise on the other end of a phone... I feel your pain. My sister is in NC and had a dealership give her the run around on a warranty repair trying to say it was her driving style that caused the wheel bearing to separate- yea, right... She asked me to call on her behalf and talk through the problem with the service manager, when I asked him to elaborate on how her “driving style could cause that”, he said (verbatim) “yea, good luck buddy, you’re a 1000 miles from me, I don’t have to deal with your shit” and hung up the phone on me!

Saving grace - I was being overly nice at the time AND recording the call, so when I called him back and played the recording back - he “decided” to work with me really quickly...

I wish you all the luck!!

Cant agree more I could have never done half of the things to my e34 and e39 with out the bimmer community. When I did my first engine swap m50TU to a S50 the board were awesome....I initially did it all myself and everything went good....was lucky that it was the sme 413 harness so it was a direct swap..

got it done at 7pm fired it up and it ran for a few seconds and then died...I was like WTF...was running over everything again and again and could not find the issue...

So posted that night to BimmerForums and the next morning had several replies. The 1st reply suggested that I confirm that I connect the main ground correctly...

I'd be damn when out and checked and it was not even connected....connected it and it fired right up....WHOOHOOO!!!

Then had a BMW factory mechanic from South America help with with all the wire diagrams so I could swap the pedal clusters for the 5-Speed ZF from the slush box..

He send me all the factory diagrams and what needed to be done for the swap...He was awesome but I think since he was a huge Bimmer buff he understood and made all the difference in the world
