we have a motor home that can tow the boat but i prefer using a SUV to tow the boat like my x5. Because my motor home is 23ft and i don't want to use the motor home in short distant.

I think you've answered your own question. The dealer says the hitch won't stand the weight. For me, that would be the end of the matter. As one who has towed alot, I can tell you that a wide safety margin is desireable when towing. While the X5 may be able to tow 6,000 lbs, when it is pulling at it's limit there isn't much of a safety margin given it's own weight and wheelbase. I personally think you are trying to use the wrong vehicle to pull our boat. The dealer agrees.

you'll be fine, just dont go over 65 and leave yourself plently of room.

I regularly tow a 25ft cobalt with my 01 3.0 , no problems

towing won't be that much of a problem if you take it easy,
stopping the entire combo will be another thing

I think you may be at the max or exceeding the max towing capacity. I don't like to overstress the tranny or anything else on the vehicle which could fail and pose a danger. Err on the side of safety, not the opposite. It also depends on how much, how far, and what type of terrain you cover when you tow. I would probably just buy a tow vehicle to handle a 24 footer. Probably a diesel with enough torque to tow a big boy!

You hit the nail on the head with the stopping part. That is the area most RVers find troubling and where they get in trouble.. That's why you see some rather large rigs pulling large 5ers. ( stopping safely )

I pulled a 2 horse gooseneck with living quarters - total trailer length was 35' with an approximate loaded weight of 8,000 lbs. I used a 2004 Dodge 2500 (3/4 ton) with a 6 cylinder Cummins diesel. It towed the trailer easily and as an OK daily driver when not hauling ( a stiff ride though). You don't need a 1 ton, which would substantially stiffen the ride when you weren't hauling.

I used to tow a 2 horse bumper pull with the same truck and as soon as I got the goseneck, I could see a huge difference in overal stability. This was especially true in a cross wind. If I was to haul a heavy load on a regular basis in the future, this is the setup I would want.

Everyone is writing about whatg is good for the vehicle, it's tranny and the such, but for me it is a question of personal safety. Will the X5 give you a wide enough margin of safety in all anticipated conditions? I don't think it will with the weight you are contemplating. A 3/4 ton is teh ticket, in my opinion and I'm sure you can buy a low mleage 3 year old truck for peanuts these days.
