You guys all need to shut up! My 3.0 X5 turned one year old today and I'm trying to keep it for at least two years (it's been 10 years since I've held a car that long).

So shut up about the diesel! You have me drooling!

Yep - unfortunately no remaped diesel will ever get that V8 growl

The 35d X5 does sound better than my 335d coupe though.

I test drove the 335d and posted my experience in the Premier Members forum. The bi-turbo diesel essentially irons out any elevation changes. It makes roads flat, and when you have to merge onto the freeway, the acceleration is deceptively smooth. One downshift, about 3k revs, and I was shooting over 130km/h.

GPSnV1:
Off the line, the 35d beats the 4.8 - up to about 50MPH. After that, the 4.8 will perform like any other gasoline engine and move faster than a diesel since the max torque on a diesel is at lower RPMs and, conversely, at higher RPMs for a gasoline engine.
Personally, the "fun factor" and "useful range" is at lower speeds (i.e. up to 50MHP), so the slower acceleration at higher speeds doesn't bother me.

Huk, I don't know if you are driving a diesel but I am not sure i will completely agree with what you are saying... Don't take me wrong and I am only saying this from experience.... at least my car(sd) rocks up to 200km and not 90 km as you are saying.... and when the second turbo kicks in you don't feel any kind of lag at all at higher rpm....

Now I am thinking that maybe the gasoline will not move faster at higher rpm as you are saying.... why ? lets try to make a more fair comparison x5 3.0si (gasoline) and x5 3.0sd (diesel) both cars are almost the same hp (10hp difference). But there is nothing to compare at lower or higher rpm... with those 2 cars... even if gasoline is faster at higher rpm the diesel will kick its ......

Mine has a check engine light on right now. Going to the dealer this afternoon to find out what's causing the problem...

The diesel pulls very strongly right up to as fast as you'd want to go. It certainly does NOT wimp out past 130km/h.

I need to get out more...I put less than 5K on my 4.4 last year. My father in law drove the diesel and said it was a torque monster. He went with Cayenne because of the seats.

What were the differences in the seats to go with the Cayenne?

I just sold my '05 Cayenne. Seats were fine, though not remarkable. Better than the standard X5 seats, not as good as the comfort seats (in my opinion). No memory on the seats I had, which made sharing the car with the wife lame. Inflatable lumbar which I never used. They weren't nearly as bolstered as the X5 sport seats; but I had the sluggish V6 so that wasn't really something that my Cayenne needed.
