Thanks everyone for your input. I saw the advertisement from Burger Tuning in the Roundel Magazine and just wanted to see if anyone has tried it. I emailed Burger Tuning and asked if they can provide a better dyno sheet. His response was thats all they have listed on the site. So until JB Performance can provide some real results, Ill pass on them.

Thanks,

DaRip

I appreciate your perspective, obviously you do this for a living and have a passion. Having said that, is it possible, that blanket statements are not accurate in all instances? Have you specifically looked at the JBD Tuner that the OP was evaluating? Do you own one? Prior to making blanket statements, it might make sense to do some research on the specifics in question. That way the OP has more info to go on for his/her particular inquiry. Rather than a blanket statement that they all suck, or are no more than a resistor in a box.
Yes I appreciate what your saying. I do agree that most times nobody should generalise a product or paint them with the one brush but I have been dealing with these tuning boxes for the past decade.
They either plug into the Fuel temperature sensor, the fuel rail sensor - most likely in BMW applications and sometimes they plug into the Air flow meters (older ones)

But all of them I have seen that look like the one the OP posted with two wires coming out of them have only a resistor inside

But yes they do work, they do make the engine produce more bhp but in a very very crude way.
Raising the fuel pressure in a fuel rail is something that should be avoided if possible - In my honest opinion of course

So everyone here has now made up their mind based on one person's opinion ? Wow. You people are easily influenced. Wouldn't you want to do more research ? There are many sources for info on this. There are forums dedicated to tuning these motors.

As far as i know there's a few ways programmers / tuners can increase power in a diesel...Rail Pressure, Boost, Timing, Tq Mgmt Manipulation (programmer on my truck dose all of these).....all of them can cause breakage at higher levels that are above safety margins...RP on the fuel system, Boost on the turbo, Timing on the motor, tq mgmt on the trans....all of them on the drive train.....

I'm sure some of the tuners are crude and some more sophisticated than a resistor in a box....it's a balance of cost / approach / safety and performance...and from what i've seen of the bmw diesel performance offerings (at least US) they are all relatively mild/responsible/sensable (jbd as an example)....you're not really pushing things at 30hp/50ft-lbs increases @50%....that should only take a mild pressure increase / boost increase and i couldnt imagine that it would cause much incremental wear...most components have more than 10% overrating (i would think)...

Personally my concerns with a performance enhancer are :
- Detectability and impact on warranty in the case of a major failure (related or not)
- impact on the DPF - more fuel = more soot = more regen's = higher workload on the DPF
system
- Not willing to gamble on an expensive x5 ...in the truck world a famous saying is "you pay
to play"...and i'm sure that can get quite spendy on a BMW....

In the end, if mine were a purchase in lieu of a lease, i'd do my research and get one....they can make such a huge difference in drivability and put a smile on your face each time you drive it...and it can be done safely if the right solution is purchased and common sense is used....e.g. dont run 100%, flog it, boosted launches at every light,...

Look, all of us are trying to learn something here. He is only person that actually know thing or two about this little black boxes if you know something please point me to a section on there web site were it explains how this "black box" works. I just spend half hour on there web site reading installation manual
and there is no explanation how this works. "Magic" maybe .... resistor who cares... am i willing to put this black box in my car with out "ANY" technical explanation HELL NO...

but i did read there TERMS AND CONDITIONS

WITHOUT LIMITATION TO THE FORGOING: (I) PURCHASER EXPRESSLY ACKNOWLEDGES THAT USE OF THE PRODUCT MAY VOID ANY OR ALL WARRANTIES APPLICABLE TO ANY VEHICLE IN WHICH A PRODUCT IS INSTALLED AND PURCHASER AGREES TO RELEASE, INDEMNIFY AND TO HOLD SELLER HARMLESS FROM ANY CLAIMS DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY RELATED TO OR ARISING OUT OF ANY VOIDED WARRANTIES RELATED TO OUR ARISING OUT OF USE OF A PRODUCT; (II) PURCHASER EXPRESSLY ACKNOWLEDGES THAT PRODUCTS MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO ANY VEHICLE IN WHICH SUCH PRODUCTS ARE INSTALLED AND PURCHASER AGREES TO RELEASE, INDEMNIFY AND TO HOLD SELLER HARMLESS FROM ANY CLAIMS DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY RELATED TO OR ARISING OUT OF ANY DAMAGE TO A VEHICLE ALLEGEDLY CAUSED BY A PRODUCT; AND, (III) PURCHASER EXPRESSLY ACKNOWLEDGES AND HEREBY AGREES THAT PURCHASER IS FAMILIAR WITH AND AGREES TO COMPLY WITH ANY LAWS, RULES OR REGULATIONS RELATED TO PRODUCTS (“APPLICABLE LAWS”) AND PURCHASER AGREES TO RELEASE, INDEMNIFY AND TO HOLD SELLER HARMLESS FROM ANY CLAIMS RELATED TO OR ARISING OUT OF ANY ALLEGATION THAT PURCHASER FAILED TO COMPLY WITH APPLICABLE LAWS.

Would you like the tuner to assume responsibility for you dialing up the boost and blowing up you vehicle ? You realize how many people go ape shit with these devices and push them to the limit . Then they show up to the dealership wondering why they fried their engine or other components. Maybe you think the tuner should assume responsibility. In this litigious society, anyone who has any kind of a business has to protect themselves from lawsuits. If you feel like one person's opinion is your guiding light, go ahead. Neither I nor anyone else loses anything here. This isn't my first BMW. I've dealt with a lot of these tuners and seen what they can and can't do. If 2 wires and a resistor is the magic potion, you would see 200 tuners selling their product on E90Post, and every other site that deals with tuning.
