My 35d has been rock solid. I replaced the sticky passenger door handle inner trim with a Cheap Chinese Ebay part for $12.99 and that's pretty much it. It's been a trooper and my family loves it. Around 145k miles now and I did get a belt squeal on a cold start a week ago. Need to do the belts and pulleys and then the vacuum lines too. I just am burnt out on working on cars.

What have you done to your E70 today?
Quote:
BMW decided to make a variable output oil pump that's controlled by the DME. They maximized efficiency over longevity and use just slightly too little oil pressure. The problem is exacerbated by wide open throttle followed by immediate coasting; the pressure request will drop from ≈ 70 psi down to 40 psi when it should probably be more like 80 psi down to 50 psi. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2201790 Best write up on the topic on the internet^^^ So i was looking into finding a tuner nearby that could use the information in that thread to tune my car until i realized the output of the sensor is simply a linear relationship of pressure to voltage. So I'm developing a very simple mod that will modify the pressure reading to the DME to trick the DME into thinking the pressure is lower and therefore boost the actual pressure. I'm working on what the ratio will be but somewhere between 80 and 85% Eg: at actual 40 psi tell the computer it's 40*0.8=32 and it'll boost to 40/0.8=50 psi. (seems a little high but minus atm pressure = 50-14.7=35.3). I think i like 35 psi much better than 40-14.7=25. When i get the details worked out i will be posting the fix of course! The n55 motor uses about 50 psi cruising and 40 at idle and 68 i think maximum load. ![]() This graph is a using some estimated values but in this example the sensor is outputting 2.45v which would be 49 psi but 2v is sent to the DME so it thinks it's 40 psi, it will boost the pressure until it actually is 49 psi. (For those in the know, the oil pump on N55 is technically a volume controlled pump, but the feedback is pressure not volume). My engine was not in good shape i was actually working on a trade with somebody to get a core engine that had spun bearings but only 110k miles, rebuild that engine but my car decided i should replace the motor about a year sooner than i planned. For anybody that ends up in the same boat: if you have a place to do it and a helper it's not a terrible job just time consuming. Cost about $5500 including all new coolant hoses and power steering lines. 20 hours or so labor. About 30-50% the cost of a similar e70 so definitely worth the effort. Oh: 5700 including the new motor mounts and catalytic converter brackets. –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone

When I first got my 35d in 2014, I had a sticky interior door handle. I'd pull it to open the door and it would unlock the door but it wouldn't return to the rest position. I had to wait for it to slowly return or hit around it or direct warm air towards the door. Used some silicone spray around the door latch a few times and somehow, eventually I got it to the right place and it has been working ever since. It was definitely exacerbated by low/winter temperature. Just passed 184k miles last night. I love it, considered a newer Cayenne but I just like knowing the exact nature and history of what I have and I like the E70. I hope for many more miles for you and I!

Cold start squeal is often PS pump not belts. You can spray water on the belts to confirm if belts are causing the noise. Sometimes it's the idler pulley and that's an easy fix.

I was actually talking about the part that you pull to shut the door when you're inside the car -- it was all sticky ever since we got it. Here is the part I bought to fix it, which actually is a really high quality part and took 90 seconds to install: https://www.ebay.com/itm/355243566907 Quote:
On the M57 or on the N55? I have a diesel.

My passenger door inner grab handle was just like you describe. Like the adhesive left behind when you remove electrical tape that was wrapped around something in the sun for a year!

Yeah, the soft touch material is nice but turns junky as the vehicle ages. Mine isn't sticky, never has been; it bubbles up and I can peel sections up. It looks terrible in the meantime, but it's not sticky at least. I've read that a citrus-based cleaner and a blue Scotch-Brite non-scouring pad can remove the rest with some effort. Someday I may do that or just accept every time I detail it, some more comes off.

I think mine is doing that on the steering wheel. The gummy part was only on the passenger door pull.
I have a very very big thing in the works to prevent the auto-destruct of N55 motors that is starting to happen at soon to be epidemic proportions (We had both our n55 seize while on the freeway within a month of each other. One at 195k right after full throttle pull the other at 110k just while driving steady state). Oh that one didn't seize just rod knock. I have a friend that owns a 2013 and 2011 also rod knock at 150 and 110k. Grocery getters not tracked! (Though I've put my car though the paces a few times). For a preview of the what the why yhr how, it's a long read but if you have any bmw with DME controlled oil pressure you want to be in the know: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2201790 –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone

The M57 does not have the controlled oil pressure though right? I can't find anything about that in a quick googling.
