No harness - no bluetooth ?
This new ULF that I'm about to pick up tomorrow... Well I just took out the plastic trim in the boot to have a look at where it's going to fit (already located the mike wire), and THERES NO BLOODY CONNECTOR !!!! Which ties in with the fact that under the armrest there's SFA too ! So looks like I'll have to stick with the Nokia after all. Gutted. I was sure that a fully specced car with TV/NAV, Memory seats etc. would at least be pre-wired. Maybe it's just us in the UK that suffer as I have read everywhere on this forum that all USA X5s are prewired for phone. Here's what I found I've seen a PDF on here that shows a complete retrofit kit with loom and ULF etc. but of course i'd only want the boot section part of the loom (no interest in the cradle other than for pairing). Does anyone know if that part is for sale seperately? Thanks again guys. Kev Last edited by Kev; 10-13-2007 at 12:22 PM. |

... or indeed if that would be of any use to me.
Maybe the 3-pin connector I found near the map-light in the headlining isn't for the mike after all (one red and two dark wires). If it is, where would the other end be !?! And why bother having the buttons on the steering wheel? Would be really nice to hear that there's a simple cable that I need to add to my shopping list, but I doubt it based on my luck so far. Here's what the car came with... Sorry it's in German but the numbers are what counts and SA604 ain't there whichever language its in. I'm supposed to pick up the ULF tomorrow. If anyone could give me some advice before then I'd be eternally grateful. Kev. Last edited by Kev; 10-13-2007 at 12:32 PM. |

Try this Kev....

Cheers TD. I read those front-to-back now and still no clearer on which way to go. Americans dont have this problem it seems as they are all pre-wired. Back in Munich (where mine was imported from), they don't bother.
The car was built in June 2003. There's no standard SA640 in euro built X5s even then. So that's that. Buggered really. Tried realoem to see if a harness was listed. No joy. If I contact bimmernav they will want to sell me the whole shebang which I don't really want as I can get the main part (ULF) quite cheaply. Might give them a try anyway. Bit disappointed now after all that euphoria about the XDA working. Oh well, still a nice car, even without the bluetooth |

Kev, you could always make you own BT lead up...
I made mine up for less that £30, have a look here. http://www.xoutpost.com/bluetooth/324...h-install.html I have some spares, from when I did mine so maybe able to help you out. Do ypou have the 40 quad lock type connector for your radio module? P.S you should be able to get the loom on its own, this is the loom for a e46 (but you get the idea), give the parts dept your vin and they should be able to tell you the price and the part number for the retrofit loom. Bluetooth Wiring Harness BMW p/n 61-12-0-143-309 £120.00

Thanks John mate, bit more encouraged now
Even if I need to fork out £120 for a harness, at least if it works and doesn't involve ripping the carpet up I could live with it. Got the ULF now, all looks good, came with the card/key and book (one with with phone box on the cover). Hopefully all I need to do is get the cradle, mike, antenna and two cables now. If the dealers cant help with a cable how do you fancy getting your soldering iron out again (for a good price of course). Just the minimal cable would do. Just need to check my TV/NAV connector tomorrow - hopefully it's ok on a 2003. Well done on your retrofit. You must have been as happy as a pig in poo when it all worked Call to the dealers in the morning. Can't find a part number on real oem or ETK. Thanks again. Kev |

As for the carpet I followed a different route than that of the OEM install and it saved a lot of stripping and was much easier to do. Quote:

Evening mate, quick update...
Got the info from the Dealer$ and the harness is available for e E53 but looks like quite a complicated bit of wiring ... ...and it's 120 squids. I know I probably need the three big connectors (ULF, Radio, Power?). Then one to the cradle (or pairing button), and one to the mike (is this all the way to the headlining? Only I did find a 3pin connector). As for the rest...? Well ones an earth, but NFI on the other 2. I see what you mean about the telemute cables. Only £25, so quite a bit of embelishment on the part of BMW to get to £120 eh? Still, the futures bright... Feel free to stop me before I give Simon James £120 for a cable... Going to have a look at TFM thats kicking around on this site somewhere.... Great to have your help here... really appreciated. Kev |

The PDF is quite useful, it probably skims over some really nasty bits of the install but at least it looks quite straight forward. Up to the bit where I have to dismantel the centre console springs and run the mike cable up the a-pillar.
I was wondering, what else could that 3pin plug be in the headlining. We don't really do homelink stuff in the UK, so can't see it being that can you? Surely it's the mike ? If I could contain all the work to the boot I'd be a lot happier, but if not then I'll just take my time. I'd leave the pairing button in the boot with the ULF. Then the trip down to my Indie, to spend another £50 having it coded by their Autologic system. I assume this is absolutely necessary... Getting closer... |

If you have a ULF "MIT SES" the you get the voice control as well, if you don't have "MIT SES" then get jochens navcoder and an I-Bus interface and code the ULF for VR. Quote:
