And your MK4 is back new again. Since then he is much faster and no reading errors anymore.

This is a top tip - well done and thanks for sharing this info!

It was USD $228.00 and Welmoed was great. Swapping out the drive took me maybe 15 minutes start to finish.

Thanks Kiwi for the advice. It saved me a rather large chunk of money and it was satisfying to do it myself.

Thanks. I feel like I should get one just as a spare.

this just replaces the laser unit correct?

what are the functions of the other components of the nav computer? are they susceptible to fail at any point?

Functions: central processor, memory, input/output stages, power circuits... ie: just like a home PC. A central processor unit.

However nothing else is mechanical. The laser dies with age and the mechanism wears out mechanically. Everything else should last the life of the car.

What was your final price including shipping?

I noticed the price on the website was 145 euros for the part itself.

I looked up UPS and FedEx shipping costs

Over $100 to ship...

EDIT:

Looks like the Dutch place charges 18 euros for shipping but also charges VAT - which I thought does not apply to sales outside of the EU. Total cost 163 euros or US $238.

Also found a German company that sells the same part for 119 euros.
