01 e38 blank screen

anyone with a little more detailed help?

changed the battery on my car and the damn navi computer wont turn on.
i checked the fuses and they are all good radio works for a few minutes and then turns off. the major thing i guess is that the nav changer doesnt have the red light on wont eject the cd i tried holding it for three minutes and nothing.

is there something else i can try to get it to reboot. thanks in advance!!

its the mk 3 unit, btw.

You killed your MKIII. Unfortunately, there is no known repair or recover that I have seen. The MKIII is highly sensitive to losing power at the wrong time. If you search this forum for the keywords MKIII and battery, you will find many similar encounters.

yeah, i found out the hard way. i did find one for sale and just ordered it with new firmware loaded. i did notice a company out in cali that fixes them a guy by the name of fred he seemed to know what he was talking about. just very expensive i noticed in the parts book that bmw listed it for 1350. so besides never getting a dead battery is there something to do to avoid this problem again?

The only places I know of to fix it is the VDO Siemens repair shop in Wetzler Germany and Autronics in Australia. I had never heard of any one in the US.

I have not had contact with them for a couple of years but they did answer my email at that time. Wie stell ich das an : Navi Software Update : Seite 2 : Habe dann heute mal versucht die v17 aufzuspielen, leider wied... Go part way down the page for the address. Also autotronic is sometimes on this forum. Try LCD repair service he is in Victoria near Melbourne Australia.

Nothing overly special...

1) Open the trunk, turn off the car, and remove the key
2) Eject your map disk from the old MKIII
3) Wait until your old MKIII goes to sleep (LED turns off)
4) If the LED doesn't turn off after about 5 minutes, then continue
5) Use coat hangers to release the old MKIII from the bracket.
6) Remove the three plugs on the back of the MKIII
7) Reconnect the new MKIII by connecting the plugs in this order
A) Connect the coax antenna
B) Connect the blue 18-pin plug
C) Connect the burgundy (or yellow) 18-pin plug
8) Turn the car back on and enjoy navigation
9) It will take it about 15 minutes of use before it downloads the Almanac and acquires your position from the satellites quickly and accurately
