People fail to realize that the big 3 are very capable of building a car with amenities and materials similar to luxury brands like BMW, but it's a matter of DON'T rather than CAN'T.
The Big 3's strategy is to provide vehicles to the masses, not a few hundred thousand annually like a luxury brand, the big 3 do that in a month! :)
You can't expect them to provide vehicles to the masses at a price point that the masses can afford if they use high end materials and install high end amenities. It's an impossibility.
So what happens when a Big 3 vehicle comes close to or surpasses a luxury vehicle in performance? The luxury fan boys have anxiety attacks and scream "But it's GM! GM can't build a luxury car! Their cars suck!" because the supposedly inferior brand dared to challenge their luxo-mobile that cost them thousands more. (reading between the lines translations - their ego is hurt).
Cadillac pulling off a vehicle like the CTS-V at its pricepoint is a HUGE accomplishment for GM. I would like to see BMW/Porsche/Audi/MB do the same thing at the same price point.....
just some thoughts...
