Something interesting to note is that since 9/11 racial profiling has existed in the US whether its mentioned or not. Ask any arab or asian and they would tell you that they have been singled out since 9/11. I would bet every 1 out of 4 people have experienced it already. If your name is arab or muslim, you are automatically singled out at one time or another. Ask any arab or muslim person that you know and he or she has experienced profilling in all kinds of situations whether traveling, working, shopping, doing every day things. So really this poll is irrelavant because racial profilling exists already. You may see an 85 year old grandmother being searched, but what you dont see is arabs or asian being asked on a plane to get out of their seat and asked questions or missing a flight while their backround is being checked. And you will be amazed to know that most arabs or muslim who are American and live in this country because they love America don't actually mind having to go through this process. What many people don't hear in the media is that literally millions of American muslims have may have had their phones tapped or email read just because of their religious backround. Also what the media doesn't tell you is that alot of the plots that were uncovered or prevented were with the help of muslims informats living in the US and abroad. So really racial profilling will exist and will continue to exist until this war on terror is won, but it won't be won with the "kill'em all mentality" because all it will do is isolate people who actually have been helping us all along to win this war.

...my two cents

I remember I missed my flight because they did a backround check, I flipped out on them, i'm blond, blue eyed, 21 and well dressed so I dunno how I feel about racial profiling but they sure got an ear full from me when they made me miss my flight! *rant over*

The next time you pull that you may find yourself in Jail for a week. It does happen ma friend so i would encourage you to display the spirit of a sound mind in the future. Your being as you say blond, blue eyed, 21 and well dressed don't mean dodo if you get down wrong. You can get your head wooped just like anybody else. Think you will want to sue? get a life they will deny everything and all you will have is a busted head.

Thats funny because I had to sit outside waiting for them to finish twiddling their thumbs and I wasn't pissed about it as much as I had my frigging luggage lost AND they didn't help me rebook my flight, so yeah I did get mad and I was rude on purpose because they completely inconvenienced me, I don't think that is wrong at all, I think the wait is fine but if your a jerk to me don't expect me to be nice at all to you. That is just how I am, they approached me, we're rude from the start, so I followed suit.

I don't think racial profiling is "right." I also don't think that "right" has anything to do with safety.

There are no clear answers to this issue. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. For now, I say, DON'T...

If this war gets UGLY.. And it's starting too. We might have few choices but to do some bad things as a society as a need for survival. I hope however we refrain from doing so for as long as possible.

There are some things that can not just be "undone".

It's like torture during wartime. Sometimes, I can understand, why it may need to be done. If someone has information that can save the lives of hundreds or thousands, I could understand why they might be tortured, if they with hold vital information.

But I also think the people doing the torturing should be punished for doing it. I know it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I don't think the idea of a civilized society is one that allows an enemy to take advantage of it's own system. I do think however that a civilized society is one that only takes away human rights and freedoms when it is absouletely neccessary to it's own survival. -- We may unfortunately wind up in a world war that is this religion vs. that religion ("god" I hope not..)
But until such time that there is "no other choice" but to take away freedoms, I hope we choose to do what ever we can as a society to prevent racial profiling. And to label people by there skin color, last name, religion and wardrobe is not something we as a civilized society should take lightly. (remember the Japanese interment camps during WWII?)
And yes, maybe there was a need for the camps (national security) after Pearl Harbor. But I don't think we are there yet.

If we were living in Israel I might have a different opinion, but lets not call everyone from the middle east a suspected terrorist.

Talk about hitting the nail on the head! This pretty much says it ALL. "Stereotyping", although a "bad" word in todays society, is basically the result of the longest research ever conducted. And by REAL people! And Im sure many people are glad they exist. I have MANY muslim friends. But on my flight from Atlanta to Boston last year, when there were TWO bearded, inconspicuously dressed Muslim men who were about 25-30 years old, and the ONLY two people who didnt have ANY carry-ons, I watched em. Watched 'em like a hawk. And I guarantee if I was sitting next to Mr Reid, and he started f***in' with those shoes while I was on that plane, he would have never made it to prison...If the London Transport police had been checking bags on "random" people, The 7-7 bombings probably wouldnt have happened...

We have ALL been dealing with stereotypes for a VERY long time wether we like it or not. And now that the authorities have taken their fingers out of their a$$ and used it, no doubt many lives have been saved...
