Well, we all knew CBS and NBC were being hypocritical and disingenious. You cannot be any clearer than the wording on his contract... for them to then GASP at his comments and fire him... well, that's just double-faced and cowardly. Good for Imus. And I hope he sues them for they've got.

As blown out of porportion as this whole thing may be, bottom line is,
Imus did the wrong thing. His comments were not just racist, they were mean. CBS, despite their contract, did the right thing. Imus needed to be taken off the air. Not just to save face for the corporation but also because of the nature of the comments. It's one thing to be irrevrent, it's another to have malicious intent. -- Yes, you do hear other radio broadcasters like Howard Stern making racial remarks but those are in good nature. Everyone unders the "spirit" of his comments. It's not always what you say, IT'S HOW YOU SAY IT. What is the SUBTEXT of the remarks? I do not hope that Imus wins a thing and if he wanted to show that he's a real human being, he'd keep his mouth shout for a couple years and maybe try to re-enter entertainment when the bad taste has left everybody's mouth. Your PC police scares me more than what Imus said. While you are at it why don't we ban ALL rap music that is controversial or as you say mean. We can appoint a group of individuals to monitor every sector of speech on every airway and store shelf for mean things said and indecent material. That is insane...Just think of what you are saying and the consequences if left unchecked. |

Although I found his comments rude and uncalled for, I do not agree that he should have been fired. He was doing what CBS hired him to do. He became the fall guy. CBS can't have it both ways.

That's funny, can I quote you on that, no one has ever called me the PC police before. Quite the opposite.
I'm probably one of the least PC people you will ever meet. I have used racist terms, I have been accused of saying misogynistic things, etc. and I brush it all off. Why, because I know I'm not a racist or a misogynist. Quite the opposite. And I hate all the PC bullshit. I am a wordsmith. I am in entertainment. I understand what it is to illicit reactions from people, to push buttons, spark controversy. But I liken Imus to what Mel Gibson did. It's all about context. On the other hand, no one is suggesting we change the first amendment. Imus is free to say what he wants, both to the letter of the law and his contract. But what he said, in the context of what he was saying, was just WRONG. I'm not saying he legally should not win a case and set new precedent for PC values. All I'm saying is, I hope he has enough good judgment to let it go. CBS is a corporation and wanted to distance themselves from him.. I would want to do the same thing. And yes, his contract is clear, but that doesn't make him right. This is definately a grey matter. He has the right to say it. But he also has the right to keep his head buried in the sand. B

Context is interpreted by the individual. Context is the meaning surrounded by the word taken together with the setting or circumstances. Imus's entire show taken in "Context" was controversial and the setting was always one which revolved around controversy. His show was specific enough to spell out the "context" and the controversy into his contract. What is the "Context" of the raciest and mean things said in 90% of all rap songs? What was the "Context" when Jesse Jackson called New York "Hymietown,"? What was the "Context" of this quote by Al Sharpton on a radio show? “White folks was in caves while we was building empires... We taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it.” Be consistent now. |

In principal but " The contract does provide that CBS Radio may terminate the agreement for "just cause." Any idea what that means. Perhaps there's more in that contract than what we are seeing. Quote:
