Scottie: Good luck finding a laptop. I had an old Toshiba a few years back, it caught fire, Best Buy had no trouble taking it in and giving me a $1200 dollars. (much more than the value). But hopefully they've changed.

Laptops are one of the few things I get an extended 3-year warranty on (if it's reasonably priced). |

I've always been of the impression from friends that IBMs tend to be fairly hard wearing but am not a personal fan of their design cues.
Didn't Acer originate by producing several of the larger companies laptops for them (Compaq? HP?). Havn't used one but they sound good on paper. |

I have a Dell (broken screen) still works via an external monitor, an IBM Lenovo and a Panasonic Toughbook Elite.
After almost two years, the Toughbook looks and works like brand new whereas the IBM is a workhorse but no points for looks. The Toughbook is the same that the law enforcement uses. The Elite series is for professionals and can take a lot of hit and drops. Check out the CF-W2 or any of the newer models. You will not be disappointed but they do cost a few $$$. http://www.panasonic.com/business/to...ess-rugged.asp

personally i'd stay the heck away from HP, SONY, ACER and COMPAQ(hp). Suggest going with a referb lenovo/ibm as they are only about $600 and for a temp time replacement are great

Interesting: In all the years of having Mac products ( Believe me I mean a lot of years) I have only sent something back once, and been in the store once about a problem. Both times the problems were fixed so quickly i was really impressed. Maybe it's because i'm closer to Cupertino.
