Interesting. I've been to the Apple store at least a dozen times with my iBook. They've sent it out to Kentucky for repair four times, two for hard drives, once for software, and another for a logic board. Three strike rule my a**. When I asked, they said "we don't keep records on past services" I guess they lost my entire service history, because I manually had to tell them my reciept numbers. I'm going to e-mail that contact right now about my experiences. Thank you for that. (EDIT: nevermind...anybody in USA? Thanks, though)

Scottie: Good luck finding a laptop. I had an old Toshiba a few years back, it caught fire, Best Buy had no trouble taking it in and giving me a $1200 dollars. (much more than the value). But hopefully they've changed.

Probably this one then:

Acer Aspire 5683WLMi Laptop
Acer Aspire 5683WLMi - LX.AFQ0X.023 - Core 2 Duo T5500 / 1.66 GHz - Centrino Duo - RAM : 2 GB - HD : 160 GB - DVD¦RW (+R double layer) / DVD-RAM - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : 802.11a/b/g - Vista Home Premium - 15.4" Widescreen TFT 1280 x 800 ( WXGA ) NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 SE TurboCache supporting 256MB - 1 year warranty

Don't know if it has Bluetooth or if you need that you may be able to customize it. Laptops are one of the few things I get an extended 3-year warranty on (if it's reasonably priced).

I was told the exact same thing by a firend I think he is going to email his contact in Apple here in the UK today. Still I think I shouldn't have to go this far as the Laptop still under guarantee.

In the USA, I would try Elise Taylor <[email protected]>. She is part of the AppleCare Specialist Admin Team and should be able to put you in contact with a Specialist. I believe she deals more specifically in the shipping of new systems. I dealt with her near the end, despite her being based in Texas.
Another member of that team is
Pete Kiriakos <[email protected]>.

Good luck! And if you can don't mention my contact details - cheers.

I've always been of the impression from friends that IBMs tend to be fairly hard wearing but am not a personal fan of their design cues.

Didn't Acer originate by producing several of the larger companies laptops for them (Compaq? HP?). Havn't used one but they sound good on paper.

I have a Dell (broken screen) still works via an external monitor, an IBM Lenovo and a Panasonic Toughbook Elite.

After almost two years, the Toughbook looks and works like brand new whereas the IBM is a workhorse but no points for looks. The Toughbook is the same that the law enforcement uses. The Elite series is for professionals and can take a lot of hit and drops. Check out the CF-W2 or any of the newer models. You will not be disappointed but they do cost a few $$$.

personally i'd stay the heck away from HP, SONY, ACER and COMPAQ(hp). Suggest going with a referb lenovo/ibm as they are only about $600 and for a temp time replacement are great

Interesting: In all the years of having Mac products ( Believe me I mean a lot of years) I have only sent something back once, and been in the store once about a problem. Both times the problems were fixed so quickly i was really impressed. Maybe it's because i'm closer to Cupertino.
