on that note, am I the only one who is tired of "raps justification" being that it is an art form reflecting culture? Wasn't Imus just reflecting the culture? Such BS.

Wait now...The Beetles were considered subversive in their day...Then it was Rock and Roll in the 70's.

I think for the most part it is a generational thing...But when it comes to "rap" and especially "gangster rap" I'm with you.

I didn't know a person could "agree" with statistics.

Either they are legitimate stats, or they are falsified. Either way, I'm not sure what you are asking??

I assumed the stats were legitimate.

And MrLabGuy:

If you are going to site statistics to support an argument that hip hop and gansta rap have caused the murder rate among blacks to rise, then the statistics have to show a rise in the murder rate, not a decline.

If you are going to argue that culture plays a part in this, I think you would have a much better argument in blaming the breakdown of the family unit in the black community. And I don't think you can blame that on hip hop, since this happened long before hip hop existed. There have been dozens of books on the subject, and most point to a period in the 1960s when illegal drugs were introduced to the urban ghettos.

Remember folks Hip hop and Gansta Rap are 2 different things. You can skirt this comment all you want but i'll lay it out again............

Interesting satistics. Thanks for sharing them. If you would though remember satistics don't explain the human factor, or the real issues that make them up. As one white Author pointed out..............

http://www.city-journal.org/html/6_2_my_black.html

"My black crime problem, and ours, is that for most Americans, especially for average white Americans, the distance is not merely great but almost unfathomable, the fear is enormous and largely justifiable, and the black kids who inspire the fear seem not merely unrecognizable but alien. Not that we can’t understand where they come from, when we stop to consider. After all, the child is father to the man: and think how many inner-city black children are without parents, relatives, neighbors, teachers, coaches, or clergymen to teach them right from wrong, give them loving and consistent discipline, show them the moral and material value of hard work and study, and bring them to cherish the self-respect that comes only from respecting the life, liberty, and property of others. Think how many black children grow up where parents neglect and abuse them, where other adults and teenagers harass and harm them, where drug dealers exploit them. Not surprisingly, in return for the favor, some of these children kill, rape, maim, and steal without remorse. And around goes the negative feedback loop: reasonable fear feeds unreasonable white race hostility, whose reality in turn feeds unreasonable black paranoia about everything in life."

It's an insidious endless loop that many of us wish had a simple answer. The fact is there are no simple answers.

Of course obviously Sharpton is just looking for publicity, and does not care about the issue one bit.

You either believe their face value or you don't, don't make it a difficult answer (I'm sorry there isn't a wiki about it you could reference).

If you believe the stats are accurate, then you believe this is an issue that is dividable by race, it is that simple

I think that much is obvious.

But as I mentioned above, I would like to see a similar chart dividing murders by class. I think you would find poor people much more likely to be murdered than middle class or wealthy people. And you would probably find the highest murder rates in poor neighborhoods.

If that is indeed the case, could one then conclude that blacks are more likely to be murdered not because of the color of their skin, but because they are more likely to be poor (and live in poor neighborhoods) than whites are??

In the case of your post starting this thread, the city where these murders took place was Newark. Have you ever been to Newark? It is just about the poorest place on the planet. There is no "good" area of Newark, except perhaps the Airport which is halfway decent. The entire city is one big ghetto.

I've been there, although not in about 10 years. At least the peer area is pretty nice.
