Making that kind of statement is like citing how much money the owner of Facebook (another website) earns as your reason for complaining about the cost of X5World membership. After all, if one website owner earns billions, then I guess the owners of X5World must be wealthy too...right? Perhaps the issue here is not going to affect the few elite wealthy musicians and songwriters, but it will affect the average musician and songwriter who works very hard for a living and does not make millions.

The last time the copyright law was updated was 1976, before any of this digital stuff existed.

In the sense that the music or football recounting police would have to come into your home and find you breaking the law, then yes, I see your point. I just think it is an extreme example, and avoids the real issue of copyright law.

My personal feeling is that the one copy you buy has been paid for and you should be able to give it away for free if you want.
I wonder if all those New York city bums should be paying royalties on the bottles/cans they collect and return at 5 cents a piece. Hey, those guys are profiting on it at least! (insert sarcasm smiley here) |

I understand but remember "your personal feelings don't mean much when it comes to the law"

We should do a quick show of hands, how many of you have never...ever......ever....copied a CD of any kind (since they all have copyright laws, whether software or music) and never downloaded a single mp3, etc.
BTW: I can't raise my hand.

If your saying ""If you make unauthorized copies of copyrighted music recordings ... you could be held legally liable for thousands of dollars in damages." Then your right. Some of us recognize that. Others don't seem to get it at all. In fact they think it's their god given right and that's where this thread went.

Tivo and DVRs
This battle has been played out before.
The Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 law some ground rules for home recording. However, if NO copies of copyrighted matertiel is allowed...goodbye Tivo and DVRs |

Yeah...DVR's can now hit the road...bah bye...as could probably a majority of crap found on the Internet. IMO, it is just dumb to have time wasted by things like fathoming prosecuting people for making copies of these type of media. It is a waste of time, breath, action and money.

My right to do so has been jurisprudentially supported by the U.S. Supreme Court, and The Fair Use Act. Basically, what we have here is a industry that is trying to survive in the digital age. The need for the current medium such as CD's are now obsolete. Plus CD's have been overpriced for a long time, and artists usually only see .25 to .50 cents per unit sold. The artists make most of their money on live performances. Where was the RIAA when I used to rock the dual tape deck. |
