I paid about $4.2k and I saved close to $1k over what I would have paid locally. However, unless you know exactly what you want, I agree that buying locally at a store with a good return policy is
prudent.

If you like comparisons, there's a good article on Plasma, LCD and RPTVs in the latest Consumer Reports with ratings (available online or at the newstand). The online sites like avsforums are good too but you have to dig a little more.

I love my Sony 32 XBR 4 LCD, I feel it worth that the extra cost of Sony is worth it. I purchased it for my bedroom together with a new bedroom set.

No question that prices will keep dropping and the longer you wait the lower the price and you also get improved technology. I still have a Sony 26 inch tube set in my den and will probably keep it for a while.


The question of size is related to distance from the TV, not everyone needs a really big set.

I want to wait until OLED TV grows and price goes down.
OLED seems to be the future. When do you think this will happen.

I won't bet Full 1920X1080 HD is future proof. But I like to view photos via PS3 or HTPC. They look nice on full HD.

M, I am going through the same process right now. After a lot of talk, I might wait until end of April, maybe May. Word is, prices flatten in the summer as factories slow production to gear up for next years models.
I want the Panny 58" like Gresch.

I have a 42" Panasonic Viera plasma. It is a really good bang for the buck HDTV selling at most retailers for under $1,000. It was recommeded to me by a friend who owns a home theater/home security company. It is not 1080p, but unless you are viewing Blue-Ray or HD-DVD's I am not sure how many cable or dish programs are actually broadcast in that high of quality yet.

Wait few months and you will have 65" at price of 58".

You may want to check out Circuit City. They currently are offering 0% financing for 36 months. While you may pay slightly more for the TV there, getting 0% for 36 months will surely make up for it.

As for the type of TV, I would stay clear of Plasma. It is a dying technology. As the price of LCDs come down, you are going to see Plasma be discontinued soon enough. As someone else above said, OLED is the future. Right now it has just been introduced and only in very small sizes. But within the next year we are going to see OLED sets go on sale for very high prices -- the same kind of prices LCDs were about 3-4 years ago.

If I were buying a TV now, I'd get a LCD. And as someone said, LED backlit is better as it is brighter and uses less energy.

But go to a store where they have them on display and just look at the TVs and decide for yourself which you think has a better picture.
