This is by far the safest form of motorsport, and probably the most affordable. Despite that, it still offers a sensation of speed and is both challenging and exhilirating.

Autoxer - if we get enough people interested I will approach the LA chapter auto-x committee and see if we can make it official. Although it might be pricey, if the meet is in Palm Springs we could use California Speedway. If we meet some place else, maybe we could use Streets of Willow as a glorified auto-x course. What do you think?

CCA Autox won't happen. I talked to Kelly about this years ago when I organized the M3 Generations meet. There's an insurance premium in the thousands for 1 day that the CCA will not cover.

It'll be cheaper to rent out Streets of Willow and hold the meet up there if you guys are serious about having a track outing. SOW is similiar to the SD autox course where you can hit 3rd gear (but some of us are well into 4th gear ) IMO, its way safer then any parking lot and you can have way more cars participate since people don't have to go cone packing...

EDIT: also.. most here don't have helmets... you're gonna need a bunch of helmets...

I would be willing to attempt to arrange a SOW day for us. I agree that it is more like a giant auto-x then a real track.

How many participants do you think we could secure? I know that SOW is like $1,500 per day plus fire and safety. Most track days at SOW cost between 150-200. Personally, I would be willing to spend some $$$ to get a smaller group of X's out there.

yep.. typically you are looking at 2250 for 1 day at SOW...

you'll need instructors and helmets for the group as well... WSIR doesn't rent helmets out. BRP does, but thats more to rent and a further drive as well...

for the record, i love SOW.. its very technical... my training partner held the lap record for POC with a 1:14 there (in a similiar car as mine)..

I like SOW too. For taller X vehicles it might be better since the speed just does not get too high!

The lap record is pretty fast, but frankly it makes me feel better about my 1:30 in a stock suspended Mini Cooper S on street tires!

So if we get 10 people at $225 each we break-even. I have a helmet I could loan and I suspect we could scrounge around for a few more.

As for instructors... we could handle that a few ways. I will volunteer to act as one since I have instructed at that track a few times. We could also use a follow-along for the truly novice drivers if we found ourselves short-handed. I would even agree to give the safety talk and a basic chalk-talk.

maybe this should be split off as a separate meet.. a track day meet for those that want to drive their x5 on the track on a reserved day just for us.

yah, the mcs is a very capable car... it holds off a 993 on its own... especially on technical courses.. we talked about a club race a friend of mine from texas was in a few weeks back.. the vid is in that thread...

I never raced my X5 before. I would hate to see one of our cars flip over. I was at a BMW demonstration once where they showed how easily the Lexus and the MBZ SUV's can roll over and the X5 did not. But at a certain speed, substantially slower than the cars we race in, the X will flip.

I think the SOW is a great idea, but could be a different meet. A round of golf would be easier to organized, palm spring being one of the Meca of golf and winter being the perfect season to play there...I am thinking PGA West baby!...plus we can have beers all at the same time. We could also do some light 4 wheel drive / go to the Joshsua tree reservations...
