I opened them with the Thin Cut EZ Lock Disc, its pretty simple as long as you take your time to make a decent cut without burning through the plastic or else it goos up. I'm passing the sander tip on all the edges to make sure there is no garbage between the gaps. I'm not too worried about sealing them back up, pretty straightforward just have to make sure I let it cure properly.
Below is another picture of the entire assembly with Stealth Bulb and then a picture of the wrapped reflector with the cutout deflector. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...c/IMG_3678.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...c/IMG_3679.jpg |

Got the ol' girl a great deal on some Dunlop Sport Maxxx RFT's. Bought 3 (2 rears-315/35/20 1 front-275/40/20) for... ... ... $240 with almost 80% thread left. Just need one more to match it all up. Going from Contis DWS to these is a huge difference. The vehicle feels weighted now. Contis were great btw, just didn't feel like shelling out $1k+ for tires so these Dunlop will do for now.

I literally would dremel my headlights open just to dremel out that small corner amber portion, and probably would seal them back up and not even wire angel eyes lol. I'm OCD and to me the pre-facelifts need the waffles removed to install angel eyes to give the entire thing an updated look, and then I would be repainting shrouds satin black, so before I knew it i'd have a hell of a project on my hands. |
^^Thats pretty much how it starts! Lol.

Yes I'm using 4 spots of plastic weld epoxy just to hold in place. Then sealing the entire assembly with the oci-butyl. I'm going to see how it goes with my spare first just in case I screw something up.

I did the same yesterday, actually turned the outside water back on, got the hose from the shed and did a true 2 bucket hand wash in my driveway, it got up to almost 50 degrees by me today.
Didn't snap any pics because the sun was going down and I had to dry her in the garage so I pulled in to finish up! Felt good to get all the crap and salt off my X though, I usually can get 2-3 hand washes per winter at home, other than that I just hose off at self service car wash when its too cold to do it at home, just to keep salt build up off. |

So I got the Butyl tape, a good scissor, and a heat gun. Each piece of "tape" that you cut can be stretched to twice it size without compromising sealing coverage. I took the piece of tape and heated it up a bit with the heat gun just so I can stretch as I apply. Once I stretched an placed the tape as I wanted I made sure that it was centered over the cut on the assembly. After that I used the heat gun to make the butyl more pliable, it begins to look like it has condensation (not sweating or melting, that's too much). I used a paint mixer wooden spatula to then push down and spread. It begins to smear without being too gooey and you can can shape it to look really clean. You just keep doing sections and overlap them as you go around. I used about 6 different sections just to be cautious and have less of a chance to worry about heating and cooling of the butyl. I let it cool down a few minutes and then I lightly heated all of the butyl up again and used my fingers to push down into the cut gap just to be sure there was no possibility of an open seal. I then it cool for about 30 minutes and put the assembly under the shower head for 20 seconds and moving it around without letting any water in through the back panel. No water came in through any of the seal and it was done. |

A bit of a spring time refresher for the old girl's rear. After this batch, only the motor/trans mounts remain....every other joint/arm bushing and link suspension wise will have been replaced (Did the front end along with the rear subframe bushings, upper control arms and rear wishbones in the fall). Gotta love the new-car feeling!!

Automatic transmission fluid change at 112,000 - $320 at dealership. A little late, factory service manual says every 100,000. Lot of highway miles, though.

You know, I keep seeing this particular "they say" here - but the service and warranty booklet for my 2006 4.4i, on page 3 if you want to check me, says pretty clearly "Automatic Transmission Service: Change ATF every 100,000 miles."
Asked to have it done, no problem, no discussion. I did kind of mention that I'd been reviewing the manual and was catching up on all my open maintenance requirements, but I don't get the impression that my dealership was unfamiliar with doing that work. So, in light of what "they say", I guess you can take my experience for whatever you think it's worth. |
The problem stems from people hearing "lifetime" and immediately associate it with "never", when, in fact the lifetime of the fluid is considered to be 100,000 miles...as stated like you say.

Kawa, what promted the switch to 168's? Those 22's you had previously on your truck looked incredible on it!
|
The X is with the 22" very nervous. This winter I drove the X with 18" en that was so much more comfortable that I decided to buy a set of styling 168.
In the rear I had with the 22" spacers, 2 centimeter. Those are still on and the car is still a little bit nervous. I must say, the tires are worn and the car needs to be aligned but drives much better now. |
What a day? I got both front axle replaced and finally did my X-pipe
|
Drove it home from the in-laws' house in a snowstorm, and stopped to help pull some stranded kids out of a ditch. The driver had lost control, spun around on the road, went through a ditch and a fence, and ended up in a muddy field. They were able to drive to an approach to get back on the highway, but weren't able to get past one last bump that kept them stuck. I had a tow rope in the back, and was able to get them most of the way out, but ended up breaking an end off the tow rope. Very nearly got stuck myself; it had been raining pretty steadily for the last ~20 hours, so the little bit of sloppy, slushy snow there was sat on top of mud. It was like driving on grease. The local law enforcement had shown up and was able to get a tow truck out there.
The X5 was covered in mud; it was fairly dry when we got home, so took it through a car wash; all better! |

Installed new sway bar end links, still getting front-end clunks. I'm pretty certain it's mostly coming from the steering u-joint, but it still sounds like it is also coming from around the wheels/suspension (happens while turning the wheel usually).
Still getting some slight vibrations while driving, checked the rear suspension parts when I was installing the 20mm spacers the other day and the guide links are definitely shot. I also blew air down the sunroof drain openings today since water has been dripping from the overhead unit sometimes when it rains. |
Installed the xpipe yesterday:

Today I finally took off the BMW OEM bug deflector that has been on our X5 since 2004, what a difference it made!
Dropped the original 3.0i rims off to someone who's going to be plastidipping them to a matte black! Also took the 9 year old roundel of the hood as it was all cracked and faded, and replaced with a new one! I then took the X to get a nice car wash after all this Canadian snow/salt  |

Trucks still in the damn shop. Just got it back from it being in the shop for 6 days. Drove it home from the shop. Sat in it outside of my house for 2 minutes and realized and the windows didn't work (go up and down), mirrors were stuck closed, and the car would lock/unlock from the fab. I guess it was an electrical screw-up. I love/hate these trucks haha! Mostly love!

lookin good on the lift spencer! can you elaborate on the cold weather ccv system, did you just get the updated insulated parts or is there a more recent version? some guys were posting about dealers installing a heated CCV upgrade, not sure if its all OE parts and was wondering what you had put in! |
Quote:
Just did the whole BMW replacement kit with the insulated pipes available from ecs here: BMW E53 X5 M54 3.0L > Engine > Emissions > ES#260029 M54 Oil Seperator Kit - E53M4511_61. I'm not sure if its because my truck has the cold climate package or what, but the system that was on my truck had the insulated pipes and separator. I've never had a problem with the "cheese" factor, and all the pipes were pretty clean. I am pretty good with getting it up to operating temp in the colder months which appears to have helped. Aside from the oil return line (the one that connects the separator to the dipstick tube) which was really really mushy, the rest of the system seemed to be ok....brittle, but still very much functional. I really only changed it because I was already under the hood and have never changed it previously in almost 7 years of owning the X. It was more of a preventative measure than anything. Next Saturday is round 2 --- Water pump, couple hoses, coolant tank and remainder of rear suspension. I can't wait to drive it come monday afternoon (after alignment); every suspension joint, bushing and link from front to back, top to bottom will have been replaced. The front was done just before the snow flew; finally getting around to the rear....it's going to feel like a new vehicle all over again! |
Yesterday, I showed other X5 drivers what forum I am on with license plate frame and stickers.
Then I gave it away today. Getting rid of the bimmers and go back to Asian luxury. |

Yesterday I had an upholstery shop transfer the foam and leather from a good-condition passenger seat I bought to my driver's seat.
Now I can turn the seat heat on without frying myself or the seat. Paid $220 for the donor and $180 in labor to make the switch, so $400 for basically a new seat. Less than half the cost of new leather from the dealer. |
So I took my x5 4.8is into the dealership today for a routine oil change ... Come to find out that they f***ed up my engine. Now with a loaner car. I was told that they accidentally put to much oil in ~4qt. To much. So now my lower engine is seized, may need new motor. Engine had only 50k on it. Wow. What a day... Bummer

Thanks a lot boys! Sorry but multi-quote isn't working for me. I will have some better pics soon. I'm in Peru right now. The grills are all OEM they are just painted Jet Black like the car. Thanks Ricky! Very happy with the corners, lets hope it all holds up :D. The tips are finally aligned, I love the way they came out. A few pages back are the details of them, should be Page 180. X5SND you mean the gap? Hood needs to be aligned. It was taken off so many damn times from the fender work. The interior needs to get finished with the ceiling in black, as well as the pillars. Gray looks so out place in there. I'm told the wheel alignment came out $$$ so it drives like a dream now.

make sure you code off cold monitoring for the AE's or those 90 dollar bulbs will burn out on you in a couple weeks/months...
|
...can you be a little more specific? What is "cold monitoring" and how do you "code off cold monitoring"?
|
Quote:
Search the thread "Coding, what not to forget?" and you will find the lines for turning off the monitoring of the angel eyes at startup. Cold monitoring sends tiny pulses to the LCM on startup to do bulb checks on basically all the exterior bulbs, these are not noticeable with halogen bulbs and doesn't harm them, however, the pulses sent to the LED's create a flickering at startup and do harm the long term lifespan of LED's. PM member SlickGT1 he has replaced his angel eye LED's a few times before he got cold monitoring turned off. Hope that helps, I don't have links but it's all in a good search. |
From what I understand, the inline resistor is supposed to prevent that fault code...not true?

^Do they flicker when you turn the key on?

it prevents the fault code but the LCM still sends cold monitoring pulses to the bulbs at start up regardless if there is a resistor or not. Halogen bulbs take the pulses no problem, LED's do not take to it well and I'm just letting you know there is a chance one or both of the sides will fail prematurely, it's well documented.

I am not giving you a hard time...just trying to educate myself. I appreciate it. I will check if the bulbs "flicker" on startup.

Yesterday dropped the X off at the dealer I bought it from to do a cooling system pressure test as well as cylinder checks. My coolant is going somewhere....my oil is a bit milky....My guess is head gasket or cracked head. I've never let the thing overheat or anything. They are hoping its the CV system kicking back moisture into the oil.

had my tires road force balanced yesterday at the ford dealership, 100$ plus tax, took 2.5-3 hours
night and day difference, iS feels wayyy better at hwy speeds no shaking when braking @ 100-120km/hr no more vibrations @ 100-120km/hr no more steering wheel pulse when turning the wheel @ 50km/hr + lets just say Kaltire sucks |
i thanked her for a safe trip to nj and back to va. Also i would like to report that she does 100 without any issues and being a 3.0i im quite proud

Wrap the wood trim in gloss black. I'll post some pics later.

Got alternator and all CCV parts on the way... oh yea, I also got the oil filter housing gasket as well so while I'm hunting down this oil leak(s) I'm sure I've got every thing possible... humm... I wonder if the PS is leaking?:(
New to the M54 so there is going to be some growing pains but so far I really love the way this thing runs! |

Spring is finally here, so I powder coated my Style 132 wheels and put a new set of Pirelli shoes. They came out as I was hoping, perfect. I also installed a new set of OEM Sport exhaust from a 4.6is that I found on Craigslist. They are a plug and play for the 3.0, lucky me :D. Here are some pictures after a good bath.

^ Looks fantastic. Get some gloss black front grills to match the wheels.

My son gave me a scare a couple of days ago... we were on a trip, and he was home, using the X5 (better traction than his e36 in the slushy, snowy, crappy weather we missed!) He drove it home & parked it outside, and the next morning the clutch pedal was hanging mid-stroke, and the engine wouldn't start. When we returned last night though, the clutch was fine, and the battery was too low to turn over the engine; nothing a battery charger couldn't fix. I'm guessing that the clutch was maybe caused by some icy buildup around the slave cylinder that thawed out in the interim. Just thankful that my wife has a working vehicle!

Changed the oil, installed depo corner lenses (much newer look), installed canbus led plate bulbs, changed my cabin and air filters, and finally installed my intrax module.

interested to see the depo corner lenses, are you talking about inside the headlight or the fender turn signals? |

I have the original set, which was black. I will make the change to see how it looks. |

I didn't have enough free time to finish the whole thing. Here's some iPhone pics. It's not glossy enough for me though. I might need to find different supplier.
