Drove the X5 1,100 miles from NY to Orlando. Took 16 hrs.
|
Forgot to update yesterday, but I had an alignment done at the dealer. What a difference that made! :)
|
Put the plates back on, put $20 in the tank and drove the crap out of her in the snow. Man I missed driving my X.
|
Dealer installed drivers side window regulator. Now getting a idle speed vibration and intermittent Nav failure diagnosed. ALWAYS something!! I think I have more miles on BMW loaners than my own car.
|
Suspension Overhaul.
It is about that time. With 123k miles on the clock, I'm 'bout to bring my bitch back to life with these:
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...1357324157.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...1357324273.jpg Anyone care to install these for me? :stickpoke ... I'm serious though! |
Idle speed vibration supposedly solved by an adjustment to the idle speed. Now getting a Secondary Water Pump installed? I was supposed to pick it up today, but they called after seeing a fault for this system. New secondary water pump it is. Anyone heard of that? Dont find it in the service manual. Called another shop and he confirmed its there, circulates coolant when engine isnt running. ??
|
Yup we have a secondary pump. Haven't read it failing on anyone yet. Called auxiliary pump.

Also, don't Bilsteins come with integrated bump stops? I'm not sure where I read that but I believe Bilsteins HD's come with bump stocks in the shock body itself. |
New Air Cleaner
I bought a K&N Air Cleaner from Germany for less than half the rip off price here in Aussie Land. Installed it in a couple of minutes. Will never have to buy another one as it has a lifetime warranty, and doesn't restrict air flow like the origionals.

Valve covers cleaned and powder coated. Now I have to put it all back together!!!

Cost is mentioned in previous post. Ride is awesome now. Feels much more sporty and way less body roll. I took an exit at almost 65 and was amazed at handling. |

Well, today I am pretty sure that my 4.6 is ready for the timing chain rail repair. Was out shovelling the snow this morning and my wife told me she heard a "tick" in the engine when she started it yesterday morning. So I stopped shovelling, started the engine and sure enough it sounds like grinding and popping in the front of the engine. Last weekend we had the oil separator valve freeze on us while up at my mothers place and wondering if this accelerated this problem.
Taking it down to the shop for them to properly diagnose it tomorrow (hopefully it makes it). Worse case, $2500 to do the complete chain rails as they already quoted me in the summer. Best case it is something else....with 225000km's on it, its likely the rails. For a first time BMW owner I'm not lovin' it I have to be honest. I call it the money pit! I got 278000km's on my Audi and have had no problems with it other than regular maintenance (brakes, oil, tires). |

Comes with 500, 800, 3000 grit pads then finish with polish. |
Spent an hour or so underneath trying to track down an oil leak, to no avail. Cleaned it up real good with some degreaser and going back under again mid-week. :(
|
Got an OBDII scanner to clear what turned out to be the gas cap nag code.
If she continues to pop off codes (so far so good) I'd look into the laptop + inpa cable that Slick mentions. http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...i-scanner.html |

So basically start off with 1000/1200 grit then move on to the finest which is 2000 grit. A lot of guides online. |
Replaced my angel eye bulbs with LED bulbs instead. What a difference.
|
Picked it up from dealer service today after 10 days. New auxiliary water pump, idle speed adjustment +50 RPM, drivers door window regulator and clip, and new Nav firmware to clear out the Romanian junk I got off the internet last year. I think I still need a new map disc and a good cleaning of the DVD drive.
Sooo glad to have The Beast back, much better to drive than the 2013 328 I had for a loaner. |

We should get some X5s together someday, seems like quite a few of us in MN. |

well not today, but I am going to take advantage of the crazy weather and do a brake job tomrorow. Hopefully I can get it done before lunch. Grabbed a set of Akebono Euro Ceramics on Amazon of all places for pretty cheap. Rotors look good, and if they are not, then I will change those in the spring. My brakes are borderline. I probalby only have another month or so before I trip the sensor. Pretty stoked to be able to do this tomrrow. (someday I will have a heated garage so I can do this in the dead of winter).
If I have time, I may pull off my door panel again and see whats going on with the new door carrier I installed. I hate to take everything apart again and not change it with an OEM piece, but I dropped the ball on ordering one, so this will have to do. I may even, GASP, pull the e36 out and install the CAI and strut bar I've been sitting on for 2 months. Doing an ASC delete too so that should be fun. I'm excited to even take the cover off, its been months. |
Valve cover gaskets (yesterday - I was too tired to look for this thread when I came in). What a pain in the but. Too about 8 hours working out in my un heated shop in front off a small torpedo heater. Changed the spark plugs and oil separator hoses while I was in there, and cleaned out the oil separator as well. Also found a couple of broken vacuum lines. Finally got tired of working on it and came in at dinner time. Just need to reinstall the passenger air intake assembly and engine cover today, and I can take it for a test drive. It's 23 degrees here fit now, so I may wait until this afternoon...
|
Picked my X5 up from the shop (previous post I suspected the chain rails finally went). Found out the hydraulic tensioner was bad. They did do a thorough check on the rails to confirm they were ok. No plastic parts in the oil pan or in the valve covers. They also replaced the oil separator valve, thermostat, pvc valve, both serpentine belts and flushed the engine twice before a new oil. They mentioned the engine was very clean for an engine with that many kms (226,000kms).
Sounds and runs great! Parts $850, labor $650, figured I got off easy considering what I thought it was going to be. Lets hope I get at least 6 months out of it before the next major repair...! |
well yesterday didnt go quite so hot. I got into the brakes but missed the part where you are going to have probems removing the rear lower caliper bolt. Just spent a lot of time fucking with it. Got the brakes on, but now I have a very spongy pedal. I didnt bother to bleed them since I just did pads. I will wait a few hundred miles (the car stops fine, the pedal just hits in a weird spot) and chalk it up to ceramic brakes and used rotors getting used to each other.
I also found this really weird gash in one of my tires. its inbetween the treads and I think I can see the belt. Sucks as these tires are supposedly new when I bought it. There is a ton of tread so I may see about swapping it out under a prorated warranty or something. I then tried to re-route my sirius antenna to the spoiler on the roof. Snapped off one bolt holding something to the roof (inbetween the roof and the spoiler), then after I almost had the antenna into the d pillar, I pulled to hard on the end and ripped it right off! Derp.... Then I couldnt get the d pillar plastic to line back up. so no howard stern until the amazon man comes tuesday. :( |
Bed the brakes. Get up to 70, then slam the brakes without engaging abs. Slow down to about 5mph. Then repeat. Try not to stand on those hot brakes. After about 3 stops like that, park it. Drive next day with much better feel.
|
I installed factory sub with aftermarket amp. Not too much bass just prefect for me
|
I did a heli coil insert in the drain plug (PO stripped it and didn't tell me  ), checked the oil pump bolts, and installed a new reman passenger front axle. Not too bad for 3.5 hours.... :)
|
Had the passenger door lock freeze on it yesterday; it rained most of the day Friday, then the weather turned and dropped down into single-digit temps (F°) last night. It was fine when I backed it out of the garage, but there must've been some moisture inside that froze after we got to the restaurant, and wouldn't shut when my wife got in. We got it to shut by locking the door, but then it wouldn't open from inside or outside. Finally got it thawed out after driving around with the heat on high for ~15 minutes or so, then I turned the heat on in the garage for a while to make sure it dried out too. Worked fine today, which is good because my wife didn't enjoy crawling over seats to get in. Can't say I blame her! ;)
|
drove to work holding the door shut. loves cold weather.
|
During last month, had my Hualingan installed, perfect!
Replaced cooling fan clutch, the sound was horrible! Replaced steering fluid pump, now I can rotate it with one hand :) |
finally got a road force balance (my boy hooked it up at Lexus dealer for me fo free), no more shaking steering wheel.
The bad: he didnt align my car because my R/F wheel bearing is shot, and at Lexus apparently he doesnt have the zero degree wrench to adjust toe in the rear (which is what I really need, i have way too much toe in with my staggered 20s), and he dropped one of my wheels which caused 3 small nicks. The perks of having a friend who is a Lexus ASE master tech? the wheel repair guy for their dealership will be fixing my wheel for free, and if I get him the toe adjusting wrench he needs, free alignments on a Hunter machine and free balancings whenever I need :) |
^That's what friends are for :)
Change all the inerior bulbs to white LED. My wife loves it. $30 well-spent! |
I went to open my door this morning and it wouldnt open. I gave it a yank, then it opened. ok. Then I went to close it and it wouldnt close! the 2nd stage of the latch wouldnt engage. Ok - so I popped the port, lubed the carrier, lubed the latch, manually articulated the latch to both closed positions. Viola, door closes. Get in, drive 5 miles to work, derp- wont open period. Not sure if the lock is stuck closed, or the door is just frozen shut. Had to climb over. Maybe I screwed up the latch mechanism (the carrier seems to be fine, and the inside handle seems to unlock the latch), but it wouldnt open.
So, yeah, f this door :) Its supposed to be sunny today, so lets see if that helps warm everything up. It rained yesterday then got really cold, so I am hoping this is all just frozen. |
We should start a thread called: "What did YOUR WIFE/GIRLFRIEND do to your E53 Today". I hate getting calls that start with the dumbest questions: "Was there something wrong with the front tire?" You knowing that there was nothing wrong with the fooking tires automatically get pissed the fook off without knowing what's going to be said next. Just see the pics:
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...1358167476.jpg http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/m...psaef69321.jpg This is how the convo went: Me: What happened now? Her: I don't know but there's no tire Me: WTF you mean there's no tire?!?!? Her: I was driving and the little triangle with circle came on then it went off again then came back on so I pulled over cuz the car was pulling right and I checked the front and there's no tire on the passenger side front. Me: WTF DID YOU JUST SAY? Her: Cisco there's no fooking tire. Me: Where the fook are you? Her: Don't worry about it I will call a tow truck to bring you your fooking car. (this is where they get defensive) Me: Can you explain to me WTF you are talking about? I don't get this part "There's no tire" Her: I told you, I don't know what happened but there's no tire. All I see is the rim. Me: So you mean to tell me that you don't know WTF happened, you were just driving and the tire just magically fell off the rim? Her: I'll talk to you later. You are too hostile right now. I will call a tow truck. Me: Where the fook are you? Her: Don't worry. Me: Woman, you better tell me where the hell you're at? Now I hear voices, patrol car. Police:"Ma'm are you okay?" Her: Yes but, "I think (yeah she said that) I have a flat tire" Police: Ma'm you have no tire. You're currently on State Property and you cannot change a tire here. You would have to drive off on the next exit which is about 200 feet where a tow truck can come get you or you can change your tire. Her: Can you escort me out Police: Sure follow me. Me: DUDE WTF you're doing. You're about to drive on the fooking RIM. Her: Goodbye Cisco. I will send you the coordinates to where I am so you can come change your fooking tire. Me: :banghead::banghead::banghead::angryfire:angryfire :angryfire:explode::explode::explode::cussing::cus sing::cussing: I get there, see the damage, She's inside the vehicle, driver side, map light on, EATING FUCKING CHICKEN!!! I swear to you all I am not making this up. This was my Saturday night off i287 near Port Chester. I took my key, proceeded to the trunk, pulled out spare, changed tire, went home and went right into my sons room, locked the door and went night night in a toddler bed. Sunday morning went out to see the rim (or get pissed off even more), now waiting to bring it to where I got them PC out in Long Island for repair. Then buying a used Conti DWS (if I can find one). |
Cisco, that happened to me 7 times - 3 times with my wife, 4 with me... i lost the tire off the rim once, in Panama, in the middle of nowhere, hit a sharp edge of a concrete pothole going 90, the tire disintegrated by the time i managed to stop...
Other times, the remnants of the tires were still on the rim... but my conversations were almost identical to yours!!! hahahaha... I must admit, losing a tire did not feel too extraordinary, car would just start pulling to a side - going 90, i understood that i lost tire, because it happened to me before, and i kept on driving, thinking where is that helicopter, that seems to be following me - it was the shredded tires sound... check the CV boot, check the inner covers in the wheel well... she is lucky she was driving a bimmer, who knows what would have happened of it was anything else... and you should know by now, women are different species - they talk and think totally different language!!! lol... |
That is why we have an arrangement in my house. No one but myself can drive my car. You don't have a car, or I am not available to drive you, that is why we live in the city, take the bus, train, or call car service. If that scratch on the bumper was not made by me, it better not have been made by you.
lol, but I'm serious. Don't touch my car. |

I changed the oil on it today... Started off by making a bit of a mess by having the drain pan under the drain plug instead of a foot or so to the right side of the vehicle; that stuff shot out of there like it was under pressure! That's not a mistake I'll make again.
Then I went to remove the oil filter, and do you think I've got a 36mm socket or wrench around? Nope. I tried a 12" Crescent Wrench on it, but it was on there pretty snug, and with the angle it was hitting the cap, I didn't want to end up dinging up the plastic by pushing too hard. So I ran around, hitting three stores before finding a socket that would fit (and wouldn't cost $30.) Got a cheapo 1 7/16" socket for $8. I also discovered that the filter can kinda go in the wrong way, but then you can't tighten the cap properly. Note to self (and anybody else listening): if the filter doesn't slide onto the housing easily and snap into position at the end of its travel, you've probably got it on backwards. Flip it around. |

Are you running stock wheels? Won't spacers just move the wheels further outboard and create camber issues? Not being critical, just wondering why you'd add spacers if the wheels are the proper fitment and there are no rubbing issues on the suspension.
|
Yes, you add spacer to get rid of the "sunk in" look. Those 17"s are not wide enough. I had an alignment after putting 15mm spacers to the rears of my wife's X5.

Well, I've had my X for 2 months now. In addition to the stock 20s, it came with a set of new 18 inch style 87 replicas with new Pirelli Scorpion snow tires. Put those on just after Christmas. Hated the look so much, I just had a set of Conti DWS put on the stock 20s. Will just leave them on year round. Love the look with the 20s. Completely transforms the car. So far the tires are great and they ride so much better than the Michelin Diamaris that were on there. They were admittedly pretty worn, but man were they loud.
I've also put BMW winter mats in the car front and back. I'm going to tackle the final stage resistor this weekend as my hvac fan occasionally has a mind of its own. I want to do the M3 steering wheel swap, but having a hard time justifying the cost. Truck only has 59,000 miles on it and the interior is perfect including the sport steering wheel. I just hate the finger indentations in the back of the existing wheel. |
I almost lit it on fire is what I did after the coolant light come on this morning after just spending $1500 on it last week to get repaired for another problem! After having it towed to the closest BMW dealership (why I took it there is beyond me:banghead:) and them quoting me $4500 to rip it apart and re do the entire motor I had it towed again (yes almost $600 in towing today) to my mechanic and they fixed the heater hose that runs from the back of the motor to the firewall for $250.
This X5 is an absolute money pit! Again, if I had a match today there would have been one less 4.6is on the road....serenity now:)! |

Suspension refresh, at 110,000 miles. It's pretty challenging to source some kind of non-oem approach to the struts and shocks for a 4.4i with sport package. At end of the day, I used the Stage 2 suspension kit here:
BMW X5 (2000-06) - Suspension - Page 1 along with these additional pieces: BMW X5 Front 6 Piece Control Arm Kit By Meyle BMW X5 Rear Ball Joint OEM and a set of Powerflex subframe bushings. The Pelican Parts kit is very nice - thorough and complete with all the incidental parts for the job included, excellent quality and fit throughout. My mechanic had a lot of good things to day about their product. If you've run out past 100,000, you should really think about doing this kind of a refresh. You'll be very happy with the results. |

holy jesus thats expensive. So you just did shocks, but not springs? Or do you have SLS? Did you do it yourself or have a shop do it? |
...replaced the Panoramic Sunroof rubber seal (actually my excellent new mechanic did it for $90 and I supplied the BMW OEM part# 54 10 7 199 533 that I got from ECS Tuning for $39.42 including shipping = $129.42 for the entire job!!). Looks awesome and is said to be designed as much more durable than the factory OEM seal. Here's the link to the seal for those looking to do this job (it's even LESS $$$ NOW!) as it fits my 2005 4.8is E53 PERFECTLY:

Check out my sig pic, it's resting on the bump stops....so even being able to get your X to go that low is going to be a hassle as it isn't even within the range of motion to begin with. Not to mention, you DEFINITELY have to make some changes to the the wheel wells as the front will have some major rubbing issues up top. Even on the bump stops, there's barely a fingers width of clearance between the top of the tire and the fender liner. Just a heads up :) |

New engine mount... New tires and alignment.

Finally got around to changing out the headlamp trays.....its amazing how much less "shake" you get when your headlamps are held down with 4 screws instead of just the top two!
|
Quote:
i remember circa 2005 on my old VW i bought projector headlights aftermarket, and didnt have a chance to make sure they were as secure as they should be, went onto a bridge that was having construction work done and hit one of the sections that was a HARD 3" transition, and SMACK! both projectors facing down at the ground. I had coilovers set to full stiff and was lucky I didnt crack my oil pan that day. the suspension hit that 90 degree angle of the pavement so hard it popped the projectors out of their mounting sockets! after that I took them apart and screwed them down inside the headlight with additional screws! |
^^ Luckily Hella did a pretty good job as far as keeping all the internals secure. The "wings" on the trays were brittle enough from the heat inside the engine bay.....taking the headlamp housings in and out of my truck about 1000000 times probably didnt help that situation very much either! lol.
Happily it was an easy enough fix....the 2 trays and side fender bumper supports took maybe 40 minutes start to finish. |
Haven't done shit to it because of this cold weather in NYC. Need to purchase new tires since my Contis DWS are shot after 45k miles (not bad). Thinking of going Toyo Proxes ST2's though. Need to detail the shit out of it also. Need to replace rear bumper shocks and reinforcement bar due a asshole hitting me in the back my shit dips a bit from the left. Got a whining noise coming from engine compartment, but only on cold starts and once warmed up its gone. So yeah got a laundry list of shit to do, but it's gonna wait (except for that whining noise. gotta diagnose that before the shit leaves me stranded in the hills of Armonk)
|
1- Replaced both engine hood actuators; don't need a stick anymore
2- Replaced right hand shock absorber and it's upper base; clicking sound when road bumps gone 3- Replaced both steering control arms; grinding noise when turning gone 4- Replaced both foglamps; they were yellow and ugly 5- Had both headlights polished; had some scratches and discolor. 6- Removed windshield inner protection film (3M), blurry lights in night gone. |

Drove it 2,000 miles this weekend with five on board and luggage packed to the roof. That brings me up to about 6,000 miles this month. Drove in an ice storm on Friday; the entire car was covered in 1" of ice. Performed flawlessly. Only complaint was the 16.5mpg with a packed car, (we were not exactly sticking to the posted speed limits).

CCV/VCG/etc., DISA valve replaced, and oil change. :wavey:$800
|
were you leaking from the valve cover Dan?
I'm assuming at your miles you were probably due, also how bad of shape was your CCV in and your DISA valve? I pulled mine recently and replaced with a G.A.S. new silicone o-ring for 5 bucks, my DISA otherwise was tight and not loose when testing the vacuum actuator. However, that DISA seal was flat as could be and I seem to have a smoother idle and slightly improved mileage/driveability since replacing. |
Yeah my oil came out the VCG, my fiance's CCV locked her engine up on the other hand (same day). The funny thing is, mine already had a cold-climate kit on it...
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65...3DFD711873.jpg Not reassuring at all that the new one won't help much more than a regular one. I'm sure it's my daily commute that's the problem, I live about 10-15 mins. away from work. Even though the gauge does get up to temperature it's not getting hot enough to burn out the condensation. The CCV failed when we were down in the low teens for a couple of days last week. As for the DISA, he said I was driving on borrowed time... this pin was hanging out of it (the pin that drops and bends valves) and the flapper didn't move at all. I also threw the 12mm spacers on the rears today, but I'm gonna take em off because I was getting vibrations :-/ It's just the failing rear suspension pieces being felt more. Blah. |
Removed my clutch delay valve. Why does this part even exist?
Just more over engineering by ze Germans. |
I've had my x5 since last Saturday and just couldn't take the stock sub. I would of much preferred ordering some components online and doing this differently but I've never had issue with Polk Audio and heard decent reviews about the DXi. Wasn't looking for much just something better then the stock crap. I was gonna do a quick DIY but it started to rain and I was pissed so I just snapped a few pics of the process.
Total cost: $480 for sub w/ box, Alpine 500.1, wiring kit, and the LOC Time: 3 hours because I took my time trimming wires to length, finding a good place for the amp, and followed the BSW write-up which I had to modify a little because I couldn't use the sub outputs (I tried them first out of curiosity then switched to rear speakers anyway - stupid me) https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1...776/2013-01-31 https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-s...766/2013-01-31 https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-x...766/2013-01-31 https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-v...766/2013-01-31 |

Jeez man, that sucks, sorry to hear both CCV's went on you. Is your commute local roads or highway? My commute is 20-25 mins but its 18 miles of highway so I am screaming at 5th gear doing 75-80 mph at almost 4k rpm's, which I think helps. I avoid short starting and stopping trips as much as possible, but sometimes its unavoidable, you just almost have to "plan your driving" around whether the errands you need to do consist of short trips, kind of a pain in the ass. Also, not sure if the X is garaged but I've noticed that a lot of problems with the CCV happening when the X is parked outside in teens, single digits, etc overnight. My garage isn't heated or really insulated much but it doesnt get below freezing thats for sure. Hope she doesnt give you much trouble for the rest of the winter! My car is filthy thats why no pics yet (at this point I may as well wait till it warms up) |

So in attempts to make my short trips longer I've been shooting down the highway to just turn around and head back towards the house on my way home from work. I also make sure to get on it pretty good. Today I took it up to about 110 and then slowed down, took my exit, as soon as you get off there's an intersection (red light), when I came to a stop the car shut off. Any ideas? I put it in park, turned it back on and it drove fine (no SES light). *** Edit: Figured it out. The mechanic forgot to tighten the clamp on the intake elbow that's behind the MAF and it came disconnected. She's running excellent now. |
does this short trip syndrom happen when the weather is above freezing?
My commute is about 10 minutes and the truck barley gets warm... but its never below 32. most mornings around 50.... |

Man, the CCV problem is so common, I'm amazed there hasn't been a true "fix" to the problem. There have been many cases of multiple CCV failures within a vehicles lifetime. Never mind the fact that BMW looks the other way, the aftermarket should have a reasonable solution.
Something with the design needs to change. I've decided to tackle this project with my mechanic, he claims to have a couple of home-brew fixes for the CCV. Expanding the hoses to larger diameter was one idea, as well as wiring up a heating element that would turn on when you move the key to the "on" position. |

I was driving on the highway the other day and some old lady was driving on the wrong side of the highway. I immediately pressed my horn to let her know that she was on the wrong side of the. My horn sounded once and died out. Soon, after some azzwhole cut me off. Off course, my horn was inoperative. Thanx to this board I was able to fix the horn situation. I was praying that the spring clock or the horns itself was not defective. Opened the fuse box and sure enough the fuse was blown. Easy fix..... Yah.

It is definitely a problem and an expensive one too if it goes to the worst case (lockup). I personally have had it happen once and thank goodness it blew out through the oil cap. This is a big concern for me as I live in the north where cold temps happen quite frequently. I originally bought the vehicle for my wife to ride but because she only commutes less then 15 mins to work I have taken over driving it (my commute is just over an hour) to prevent her from experiencing this. I will likely sell the X5 this year at some point because of this issue with it. Unfortunate because it is a nice vehicle other than this main concern for me. |
I was afraid that I had broke the spring clock when I removed the steering wheel trim to paint that horrible peeling steering when. Plus, I did not feel like going thru the whole process of removing the air bag etc... To check the spring clock.

So I did not want to pay$1000 for a kit on ebay to update my Imola Red to the red trim interior. I did some research on vinyl and got it in last week.
I have only done two pieces and will re-do the first piece as the second came out a lot better. Looks pretty good even up close and for $14.99 worth of vinyl it is worth it. I will update pics when the rest is completed. Thanks Shawn |

I am curious how much of a pan it would be to wrap the console though. A lot of edges that would show pretty bad on a gloss vinyl. Enough of a headache to make me think about living with my dark wood... |
I have watched quite a few videos on YouTube to see how it is done and when you heat it up it will mold around just about anything. It will stretch and you would not have any issues as far as I can tell.
I will post my efforts here soon. Remodeling a home so will be a few days. Shawn |

smwmustang, that looks really great. And yeah I don't blame you for not getting that ridiculously priced OEM kit. Once you dominate using vinyl go ahead and do the lower trim of your steering wheel :)
xsx450 standard vinyl is really easy to work with. Just have a heat gun handy and you'll be able to mold the edges very easily. Make sure your center console has no flaws, they will show up right away. You have a blacked out X5, the piano black would look so nice on your ride. I am going to have my brother's trim painted rather than vinyled because he has cracks on 2 different wood pieces. Not only do we both hate the wood but there is damage. I have had trim painted on a few other cars and I loved the way it came out. I also had 3M silver carbon film and 3M brushed aluminum film and it was not too hard to manipulate. Since it has texture and thicker it goes over flaws nicely and hides them. |

So should i try to wrap it gloss black vinyl or get it sprayed piano black? Maybe even sapphire to match the outside... About how much should a shop charge to paint the pieces if you bring them to them out of the truck? |
Quote:
Would love to do this mod, just wondering how tough it would be to wrap the console pieces. I like the wood, but don't love it, would much rather do a Titan Silver trim or Piano Black. Then theres also the fact that I would need to replace my shifter because thats gotta be tough to do. Link to vinyl you bought? Maybe they have different colors I can check out. |
I don't think it's that hard. Except for the center trim which is just involved to remove. Most people use di-noc wrap. I've never seen one done in person, but it looks great in picture. I plan on doing mine this summer. I've got to yank the dash to do the blower.
|
its not hard at all. it just requires alot of patience and perserverance.
Centre console has to come out to be done properly, you want the di noc to wrap around the edges and go under the trim otherwise it will start to life off in corners. Remember di noc is very forgiving and the results are well worth it in the end  |
I just bought my vinyl on eBay and made sure it was 3M. For the price it was worth giving it try even if I had to practice a little.
I have the piano black interior already and that was why I bought this vehicle but I am ready for a change and with the vinyl you can take it off later to change it back. Just do a search on youtube and you will get all the videos you want on vinyl and how to do it. Heating it is the key as it will not really sitck until you heat it up. I just used my wife's hairdryer on the HOT setting and it worked fine. You want the heat hot enough to feel really hot on your hand but not burn you. Once I find a thread on how to take the center console piece out I will get started on it. I am also going to do the shiter center piece as well. Shawn |
sell me that piano black!
|
Not letting go of the piano black. It was too hard to find and I searched for some time to find this car. Even sacrificed on the high miles to get it.
Just always tinkering and changing so I will get tired of the red someday as well. Now to put some red leather interior in it as well. Shawn |
I feel you!
Time for some Red Recaro's in there!! |
I just spent all morning reading about 3m vinyl and I think I will order a few samples and try it out, apparently 1080 Scotchprint vinyl is easy as hell to use. I will probably wrap the easier trim pieces myself like the 4 door pieces, and then take my center console piece to my tint shop and toss them a couple bucks so that piece looks professional. I've never been good with vinyl lol. And I'll have to either figure how to get the wood trim separated from the manual shifter or just get a new leather shift knob with no wood trim.
What is the OE piano black like? Does it have any metallic flake at all? I was going to order Gloss Black, Gloss Black Metallic, White Aluminum (looks like Titan Silver), and Sterling Silver samples to see if I wanted to do the black or if I could try a color that looks a lot like Titan Silver to match the door pulls/gauge rings. The Di-Noc carbon fiber stuff looks nice, but I'm not into CF at all. The 1080 Scotchprint is only about 3-4 per square foot, looks like I can get 20 sq feet for around 50 bucks. |
The 3M Brushed and the Di-Noc I tried out were very easy to work. You need a heat gun. Don't bother if you don't have one. The good thing about this material, like vinyl is that you can bend and pull. Since its thicker it gives you a bit more ability to get away with flaws... BUT if you over stretch it you also run the risk of messing with the pattern. But really its not very to do. If you are buying a roll you will have plenty left over to re-do.
If you don't want to deal with vinyl just go with paint. On my E39 M5 I paid $225 for all the pieces including the steering wheel lower trim. It came out perfect and matched my exterior. Carbon or Sapphire Black trim looks amazing, more depth than just gloss black but that also looks good. Quote:
I got them from A-Spec. They sold me 20" Ferric Gray 215s for my E70d, as you can see in my signature below. I got some curb rash on them after letting a few family members use the car. I ordered a new set in Hyperblack so I decided to have these cleaned up and painted gloss black for lil bro's ride. I think they came out great. |

I know this is not everyone's cup of tea. Some of you may hate it. But its done. The center console will get sprayed tomorrow. A buddy of mine is doing this for me as a side thing :)

I thought those GPS units weren't accurate? I know our speedos aren't calibrated to high specs, but if that gap is a dynamic number, thats 8mph. Seems like a lot to be off. If the number is extrapolated the faster one goes, then I guess its not so bad???

i have personally taken the E53 2002 4.6iS to the 140 MPH mark (based on speedometer, which is optimistic, in reality it had to be in the vicinity of 135 MPH) sustained for a couple of minutes.
The car felt totally planted on the road, the engine was working nice and smooth, i felt that there was more power available, but when my vision became "tunnel vision", I simply chickened out!!! besides, the road was NOT designed for those speeds, as i felt the side winds, and the up/down movements were much more pronounced than, say when you are going just at 70 MPH... |
somewhere on the board is a u-boob link of our 3.0 5sp X'er rolling at 200kmh, ~125mph, to celebrate it's 123456.789th mile.. other than the camera blur, I can say it was a comfortable ride on conti snowflakes & 57's. I quit when I saw oncoming traffic again, so only 2 miles or so. My revs were in the hi 5's so couldn't be much more (IMHO) with wind resistance, etc.
4.10 here as well (grrrr).. short shift back-ordered to infinity(again MHO, sorry UUC), and 2.64 difs fell off the map of wishies for lack of confirmed sightings, lol. I -briefly- considered top-speeding it, but it was 12º F and I was pretty sure traffic wouldn't cooperate (and I was right). I can't imagine how much road it would've taken to get the remaining mph, but if my e12 2.8 was any indication, it took 2km to get from 220 to 235kmh (racing a Ferrari at the time). It weighed ~3200lb. |

ive always wanted a 1970 trans am white with blue interior, i would even settle for a 400 but 455 would be awesome. every time my kids would ask for something and then complained when i told them they had to wait, i would say to them "do you know how long ive been waiting for my firebird" that usually stoped them hehehe, thanks for sharing |
I forgot to mention that I ordered this supersprint exhaust direct from the Italy website instead of the us site and it was 1300$ shipped vs 2300$!!

I know the 4.8is can go way past 140 mph. I know this for sure. I stopped paying attention to the speedo after that, but it kept pulling hard. I sustained this speed for a while as it was way too settled, and eerie how stable it was. Plus you don't get many opportunities to try that out. The craziest part is the wind noise. I thought the pano roof would come out.
|
Replaced the fuel filter. What a PITA for that dumba$$ protection shield. Anyways, all buttoned up and done. I think I'd rather do the valley pan gasket instead of that dumb thing.
Just ticked 117K on the clock. |
Quote:
What was crazy was the minute and 2 miles it took to reach that velocity from a 90 mph roll, gives the driver lots of time to think about all the things that can go wrong!. Crazy wind noise is over 190 mph in a Henessey modded RT Viper, sounds like an F4 Fantom on full afterburner is flying 10 ft above the roof!!!! Lost a soft-top on a high speed pass thru Sarasota FL about 10 yrs ago, dealer replaced it no charge ($3800. part), was told NEVER exceed 130 mph with soft-top. |
Replaced the intake camshaft sensor. Runs like she should. Next up on the list passenger window regulator.

After successfully upgrading my Nav firmware from its original V26 (4-1/60) to V32 (4-1/00) (thanks to the links for burning a DVD in the Nav forum)...found & purchased 2012 BMW Nav DVD set (east & west) for $30 on ebay.
BTW...love the "perspective" view with the horizon off in the background...I find it very interesting...but it doesn't display street names like in the other views. Does this change with updated maps? Guess I'll see soon when my 2012 map DVDs arrive. |
Tried on some exhaust tips. They still need to be lined up. They don't look too bad. Spacers are on. It look much wider in person.
The interior needs a serious Leatherique clean. Tri-stitch is flithy and the grip on the steering wheel has a sheen. I know some of you will hate this but I wanted to try something out. I despise ambers. I haven't made a finally decision on exactly what the final outcome will be but this may very well be the look that stays.
I took apart the facelift headlights. Originally I didn't want to cut them but I tried to bake them open twice and failed. I kept ruining the assembly so I decided cutting the assemblies open instead. With my extra assembly I pulled out the amber lens first. Just like X5SND said, the headlight looked so naked and awkward. Plus the black plastic holder showed the holes. It wasn't working. After a little bit of looking around I saw people pulled these out and painted them. I wanted to try it out so I taped off the clear deflector and painted the reflector part a silver chrome from one of those arts and crafts rattle cans but the finish was definitely not as advertised, not even close. I sanded the paint off and used some white/clear reflector self-adhesive film but it was just a touch too transparent and you could see the amber behind it. I kept trying but I couldn't get the inside cut of that U shape to come out crisp so I tried removing the clear indicator deflector lense in the middle. With some dremeling I finally took that deflector out. It didn't look as naked. It didn't look too bad. The paint didn't look like something that would sit inside a headlight assembly so I sanded the paint off again and remembered I had some left over Di-Noc in Brushed Aluminum. Its a really nice film and the grain really gives the perception of metal. I wrapped the amber U piece in the film and it came out pretty nice but it looked a little too simple. I grabbed that white/clear reflector film and cut out a little triangular piece that would work with the lines. In different angles it looks the same color as the aluminum and in other there is a hard contrast, exactly how a reflector would work. I'm a little bit on the fence about this whole thing but it might stay. The front lense that you see is my spare that has some overspray on the lense. I think once I clean it up it should come out okay. I also have silver/chrome stealth indicator bulbs to help take out that egg-yolk look. Feel free to leave any feedback, good or bad. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...c/IMG_3676.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...c/IMG_3675.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c1...c/IMG_3673.jpg |
better than amber in my opinion! Did you cut them open with a dremel? give us more details on the disassembly of the lenses for sure. I don't see why if you clean up the cuts and use oci-butyl sealant that they should hold up just fine, hell if you arent going to open them up again you could always plastic weld them back together too.
