Missed it by THAT much! :(

Well my shipment from Autohaus came today. Put a little smile on my face to work on the car and forget about my surroundings. Replaced the air and cabin filter today. That took all of 10 minutes to install and then the joy was over.
|
Changed the oil with castrol 0-30. Not sure what was in there before bit it was pretty gross. Not burnt but kinda reddish. Hmm. Drained the cooling system and refilled. Sucked out the old ps fluid and refilled with fresh. Seems to be leaking, but I think it's missing an o-ring will tackle spring. Changed the coolant temp sensor oring as it was leaking there too. Sucked out the brake fluid. Also pretty gnarly. Will need new pads in the spring so will do a full fill.
Spent the evening getting my gt1/ncs/inpa/winkfp computer up and running again. Going to try some coding/updates tomorrow. Hopefully this will flash the throttle sensitivity update |

It was a good weekend for my X5. Changed the sway bar links, the reason for the stupid clunking sound. Attachment 56592
Also changed the tie rod assemblies and put a set of fresh rubber on the front. Now I just need to get an alignment. I'll probably go to the dealer, every shop I've taken her to has never been able to align her properly. I also changed the lcd screen on a 16:9 board monitor to upgrade my 4:3 screen. Attachment 56593 Luckily I sourced an mk4 nav unit to replace my mk2. I'll probably wait to get the brackets to install the head unit, then I'll just post the 4:3 and mk2 nav unit up for sale. Still got plenty to do on my to do list, but at least we are making some progress. |
Door Handle Carrier... My Turn... FML
1 Attachment(s)
Well I guess it was only a matter of time till my shit failed also. At least I have hundreds of DIY's here to fix this shit. Door still opens, looks like it got lose from rear of Carrier. Will try snapping back in and twist locking to see if I can save myself the full carrier purchase.
|
I looked at the X today. It is still there. You can't even steal it, no fuel. lol.
|
Quote:
Damn I came here to post the same exact thing. I haven't been able to have a full tank of fuel since the first week of august. $20 here $30 there. Times get rough when myself and the wife are unemployed. But hey without having lows, youd never respect how good the highs are. |

Put on the smoked LED side markers and Sprintbooster, all from bimmian. Put the also new oil filter on the shelf for next spring's oil change.
Really happy with the SB, but have to figure out how to hide the control box more OEM style. |

Finally got around to a headlight restoration. My wife hit our mailbox in my car the day after I bought it so there was paint on the passenger side headlight. Looks much better now! NINJA EDIT: You can kinda see where she hit on the passenger side, the orange filter has a hole where it broke. T_T
Now I need to wash it again. (w00t! First post!) |
New blacked out grill, cold air intake, cleaned up.
|
Oil change with German castrol 0w-30 after a year and about 15k miles.
Also, fixed the rear left door carrier. To do: r/r rear left window regulator. It's on order for $31 shipped. |
Replaced broken front left door handle carrier.
But I had removed the connector for the airbag. :( Now I have my SRS light on all the time. :( |
Finally put the 132s on. Removed the 25mm rear spacers too so if anyone's interested in those you know how to get ahold of me.

DTMdan, they look good!
I wasnt as fortunate as Zook_B as mine were damaged on the inner lens too. Found a set in very good condition for $200 for both so replaced mine today. The job was very simple after watching this youtube video: BMW X5 4.4i 2002 replacing the signal lights - YouTube I also replaced the daytime running bulbs with cool white ones I bought new on ebay for $10 for both. Look much better than the yellow look. Overall I would rate this a 6 out of 10 for level of difficulty. Took about 1.5hrs total, it was first thing in the morning so enjoyed the time waking up puttering around. Pictures of result attached. |

Replaced the rod lickages for the self level suspension on both sides and replaced the PDC control sensor on the RT front Corner. Now when I back up, I don't get an error message for PDC. Broke another tab taking the bumper off, (What else is new) and now I have a SES light. Pulled the codes and cyl 6 is out of range. Awesome. But my PDC works! lol
|
Put on 1 snow wheel. Went to my friends shop to test my tire gauges. 3 gauges are toast. The most expensive on was exponentially of. If I inflated my tires to 32, as per gauge, it was actually 49. Wtf. If gauge is at 25, actual was 33. Only gauge that stayed consistent was my shitty .99c pen gauge. Those dial gauges need to all hit the trash can.
|
new front wiper blades, installed a belly pan shield - got it from ebay (chineese aftermarket part), had to modify it a little to get it to fit, but will be nice to have no more drips...(got to tackle that damn P/S hose leak). Installed a new rear 'grip' so now I have working license plate lights.
Just need my MID to show back up (not happy at how long this took - had the work done by German Audio Tech), and since its so nice out, I'm gonna go tackle my NCS coding. I think I am just going to pay the dealer to flash my DME and EGS, I am too chicken to do it myself, not having a very good power supply.... |

"So thats why when I was using the nail gun, the nails were going through the 2x4's lol. Pressure for the compressor was prob 200PSI lol Ah man. Well, don't pitch them, that expensive one you got, I think when I looked at it has a removable back. There should be an adjustment pin inside that thing. |
Yea I took the expensive one apart with a hammer. Nope, didn't find the adjuster pin. Lol. I'm just going to order a nice digital one, and use my brass pen one for tires.
Man that is why my finish nailer has been jamming on me. I tuned the compressor with a buddies digital one, and used it all day with not one jammed nail. Can you believe how these gauges have been screwing me? I can't even describe this BS. Well I guess I need to fix the gauges on my compressor too. Lol. |
Installed thrust arm ball joints and front sway bar end links. Definite improvement, but still more work to do in the front suspension. Thrust arm bushings next.
|
Found out I have 6 interior LEDs out today, damn cheap ebay sellers.
Ordered some better ones off Amazon, I've been noticing my interior has been darker lately lol! Putting together an order from ECS with Meyle HD thrust arms, Febi balljoints and wishbones, and getting ready to drop my truck off to get those all replaced, along with getting my Ractive exhaust tips finally welded on at my local indy. I've been dealing with vibrations from my steering wheel for way too long, I can literally get under my car, grab a thrust arm in my hand, and shake it back an forth enough to get about an inch of play. |

I personally replaced one of my headlight washer nozzles today - the INSIDE one on the passenger side. What a raging PITA!! But it's DONE. I am thinking about just pulling the electrical connection on the washer pump for the headlight washers...they make a huge mess of my front end when I want to clean my windshield. Anyone else disconnect the headlight washers? |
Snip snip...
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65...02E8EE96D7.jpg I'm curious as to how 4.4/4.6/4.8 models can remove their rear bumper without dropping the exhaust. What I realized last night was that with the longer extending tips it's impossible to get the bolt that goes through the bumper/bumper bar out from the bottom because it doesn't clear the exhaust tips. So that put a detour in my way of finishing the Ractive tip mod. My dad and I decided it'd be best to have a place (i.e. Meineke) make a short pipe that would fit snugly over the existing piece on the muffler and weld that, then slide the Ractive tip over that pipe (snug fit) and screw it in from the bottom. |
you bought the bolt on versions and not the weld on ones?
I guess that would work if thats the case, good luck and let me know how it comes out! I'm going in next week! |
Quote:
|
I'll have to look at my truck I'm confused. Is there enough room if you loosen the hanger to get that bumper bolt out?
|
Quote:
|
Quote:
It is an extremely long screw though. From the bottom of the bracket (#3 on diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/w/m/82.png) to the top of the Ractive tip, the screw only came down about 2 inches. I'll see if I can take some pics after work to explain it better, it is confusing without seeing it. For reference, this is without trimming anything off the Ractive tip - tip sitting flush against muffler. -- I also don't know how guys were able to weld the tips on without dropping the exhaust or removing the bumper, there's barely any room in there. |
|
Right, but the screw is way up top no? So that 2 inch should be enough. I was pretty sure I saw body-shop guy pull of a dudes bumper without removing tips 4.8is. I remember him swearing like crazy, but he got it out. I was drinking in his shop, so I might be confused. But I was pretty sure.
|
Dan,
tips look good. Do they stick out at all more than you'd like? All the posts I was reading saying they need 1.5 - 2 inches trimmed off before they are welded on. |

Got Raped...
Greetings gang,
So I've been under the weather and have not had time or energy to do an oil change and I ask my wife to take the X to get an oil change. She took it to an indie shop in Mount Vernon, a place we've been to before and she got lubbed up with the old oil and raped. They fooking charged her... ready for this... $218.80. Yes that is correct, Two Hundred Eighteen Fooking Dollars and Eighty Cents. Here is the breakdown of the bill: Motor Oil - 8qts - $106.16 Oil Filter - 1 - $12.72 Change Oil & Filter; Check Over - 0.75 hrs - $81.00 Recycling Chrg - 2 - $2 Tax - 16.92 Total - $218.80 I asked her if she paid for this shit and her reply was: "I had to, what do you want me to do, I asked him why so much and he said that's standard." I called the place and told the owner to enjoy those $218.80 that they will be the last they see from me (before cursing his ass out). PSA: Stay the FOOK away from: EuroMeccanica in Mount Vernon New York. |

Quote:
Lots of quality places, BMW dealerships included, do oil changes at below actual retail cost to get you in the door. They are hoping to find other stuff wrong with your car to offset the cost. What you paid is full retail at Indy prices...nothing more. A Dealer with no special deals going on might charge even more. |
Another important factor is the oil change interval. In theory you can go for 10000 miles on that oil.
|
petrol & match
nothing this week
but if it turns out i need a gearbox i will be giving it a gallon of petrol and a match good riddance x5 |
been there before hippee0, been there...

Quote:
I usually do my own oil changes, heck for $75 I get the ECSTuning deal. I haven't gotten an oil change at a dealer or indy in a long time so the price to me was shocking. I also know what I am getting when I buy from ECS, unlike here I do not know what I got. My wife said they pumped the oil out of a red barrel with no markings on it into a gallon then measured with the dip stick as needed. She said she saw a yellow and green box and I guess that't the Mann filter. In a nutshell, I will continue to do my own damn oil changes and pay myself the labor rate in cognac. |

Got my car back after replacement of front sway bar bushings, Thrust arms, wishbones, and ball joints. The front end is quiet as ever and tight, feels brand new.
Now I just need an alignment (and I am setting the camber outside BMW specs as per recommendations from this forum, .01 I believe so I can wear tires evenly) and a roadforce balance as the only steering wheel shake I get now is at highway speeds, regular mount and balance just doesn't cut it anymore. Anyone know a welder in Jersey that would do my exhaust tips? |

After debating about it for over a year, I finally installed new headlights with AEs:
Attachment 56976 Attachment 56977 I also unclogged on of the sunroof drains. The car had almost a 1/5 inch of water in the driver side footwell after a heavy rain. |
@ Relentlessone...
My indy charged me 234 for replacement of the thrust arms, ball joints, and wishbone control arms, plus tax. he charged me a half hour labor for replacing the front sway bushings which came to 47.50 plus tax. I think he is a very fair indy mechanic who does good honest work, torques every bolt to spec and has a great attention to detail. If you need the name and number of my indy mechanic i'm happy to give a reference, he is in Madison, Morris County. |

Why don't you send yours to mrbmwx5 and have him upgrade the lights for you. His prices are very reasonable, maybe he will even send you a spare for the time being.
|
i sent him a pm, he hasnt volunteered his services to me yet
|

Dan that looks sexy!
No go on removing the amber though right? my headlights are 7/2003 production. Did you get your truck coded to keep the fogs on with the high beams? or is that the city lights on? I had amber city lights on my old VW and they were so nice |
Quote:
No go on removing ambers... I couldn't get the lens separated and I wasn't going to ruin the lights by trying other methods haha. I'll just get some DEPOs eventually, I don't mind the stock lights but I figured if I could do it easily why not. My production date is 11/2002. No fogs with highs (I wish), like I said the pics are a bit deceiving on how it actually looks. I wanted to do amber CL's but because I can't disable the corner lights I decided it would clash when all lights were on, I may try yellow later since I have Nokya Yellows coming for the fogs but I'm happy with how it looks currently. |
^Buy a set of 2000-2002 headlights and mod them to your liking, then sell yours.

I've done some searching and they arent easy to find, especially with lenses in good condition, and the sport package version so I only have a small amount of amber to remove (not the whole piece). my 2003 lights are mint and its tough to find ones that are. unless i'm looking in the wrong places lol. LOOKS SOLID BRO! so you were able to hook up the rear fogs without the Trailer wiring harness because you were using your own switch, not the BMW euro headlight switch? |
Quote:
|
I like it a lot, nice work, I just wish I could use it with the euro BMW switch and just run a wire to the back hatch like I did on my old VW, but I come to find out that the Trailer wire harness also is needed with that install. You used HID bulbs with the rear fogs? wild man.
Definitely contemplating this even with my own switch one of these days. |
Yeah man, we had to find a wire that had consistent power source since most wires were only sending 2-8w voltage,... So it was hard took about 3.5hrs finding it
|
I wonder if you could theoretically run the wire from the euro switch to the LCM and then use power from that same wire in the glovebox, then run 2 separate wires to the tailgate to power up the bulbs in the rear fog?
would that work? bypassing the Trailer module? hmm.... |
Euro switch is the best idea
|
yeah but the question is how to make it work via euro switch without buying the 150 trailer module...

Threw the black kidneys back on and put the Nokya yellows in the fogs.

FINALLY got my ractive tips welded on yesterday. pic to follow
|
I parked my E53 yesterday and covered up for the winter storm that's about to hit. I picked up a 2013 Ford Fusion to use as my new daily driver. At least I'll have no unexpected winter maintenance on the X5 this year
|
Quote:
This I will never understand. You parked your highly capable 4x4 for the winter, so you can drive your small sedan in the illinois winter? See, most people do things like park their small sedans so they can drive their capable 4x4's during the winter. I for example park my e36 convertible for the winter so I dont have to worry about getting stuck in the snow, in you know, a convertible. One of lifes great joys is ripping past people in little sedans in a 4x4 during a winter storm. God I miss my jeep. and my passport with the A/T tires, so much fun crabbing sideways up snow covered hills in Pittsburgh in 4-Low. I am very much looking forward to the winter in my X5, its got to be better than the 325xi I just sold, and that thing was rock solid. |
Yeah, I know :) Doesn't make sense does it. After two winter breakdowns with the CCV, it's just better to leave the X5 in the heated garage. I've even got the "cold weather" CCV upgrade, and it failed on me one winter, ruining travel plans.
Needless to say, after owning this car for many years, I've learned the hard way (many of us here have). The V8 is temperamental, at best, during the winter. The winter handling is great, but the engine tends to give me trouble in the cold. Mine's 10 years old now, and I'd like to have a few more seasons of non-winter driving with it. |
Installed a Mediabridge. Sounds good and works well for BT, but clearly not like what you'd have on a modern radio.
|
Quote:
I have such a love/hate relationship with my Mediabridge. on one hand for what it is and does its pretty amazing. On the other, you need a phd to figure it out. After almost 3 years, they have made some great strides and I couldnt imagine not having one. The BT quality has always been a bit of an issue, but a lot has to do with where you mount the mic. In my e46 I had it in the factory spot, which I swapped with the sun roof switch so it was right over my head. on the e53, I am using the OEM bluetooth so I cant comment. |
Newest Upgrades
Well this week I have been really busy with the upgrades. I threw on a set of style 99 rims for the winter (thank you Drex), installed DEPO angel eyes and fabricated a custom subwoofer box for a Kicker S10L5 in place of the standard DSP subs.
If anyone is interested in the DSP sub from my 4.6is PM me and I will arrange to have it shipped out to you. Would like to get 50 bucks for it plus whatever it costs to ship it to you. It is an improvement from the stock system, but don't expect major bass from it (go aftermarket if that is what you are looking for). http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/a...pse0f05c07.jpg http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/a...psbb1da371.jpg http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps2f7c33ed.jpg http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/a...psdc582d5f.jpg http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/a...psa081e642.jpg |

If you don't have a nav already, go aftermarket. So much cool with those. Easy camera, BT, nav, iPod connect, and much more. Just extend your obc controls to glovebox.

all depends on your wallet man, last i checked from the guys at bimmernav the complete retrofit kit was 2800 bucks if you didnt have factory nav already :wow: |
Today was Mayan Apocalypse filter day! Changed the cabin air filter and the engine air filter. Took all of about five minutes...

Meet me here & feel free to ask: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...hualingan.html |
Got a full tank of fuel and ordered a basic OBD-scantoolreaderthingy (Autel maxiscan ms300) as a xmaspresent to myself on Fleebay.
|
Filled it up, then stretched it's legs all tue way to NJ. I really need to install my updated sunroof seal. Wind noise through the pano, at those speeds, was nuts. Putting it in vent position actually helped.
|
Finally got around to dealing with the intermittent frozen check valve post compressor. Added a water separator to the system to catch moisture before it enters the main line. Also wired in a compressor kill switch by the drivers kick panel.

Cool...I thought about taking pics...but I just wanted to get out of the stuff. :) I'm a bit further north (Allen county) and we only got about 5 inches of snow...looks like Naptown got hit pretty good.
Also finally got a chance to see how my Michelin Lattitude X-Ice xi2 winter tires handle in the white stuff. I got them 11/17/12 and we've only had unseasonably warm, cold, & wet weather...finally some snow. Must say the drive was totally uneventful (steady & stable) & couldn't even break them loose under normal driving dynamics...just as they should be. ;) BTW...are you running all seasons or dedicated winter tires? |

Led indicator .....
Trying to polish the headlight but FAIL :(, going to have another go with proper sanding down ..... |
Got it coded so that
1. All the doors unlock with just a single push on the remote button. 2. All the doors self lock when the car is moving. 3. All the windows and sunroof open with the remote. 4. All the windows and sunroof close with the remote 5. can blind the driver in front of me with my fog lights and high beams. |
Tymatk, I'm interested to see more of that LED indicator bulb. Any pics of it in the light housing?
|
Put a new expansion tank in the fiance's X yesterday, took mine out yesterday for some fun in the snow. It handled great with the new tires on. Scheduled an alignment for next week too (much needed).
My buddy finished up my E46 computer chair the other day... http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65...E0B70E07E1.jpg |

I paid a total of $262 (both mirrors + shipping) which was still a few dollars cheaper that the purchase of one new EC/heated/aspherical mirror. The lowest price I could find for one new mirror here in the states was $270. I'll post pics comparing the original (left/right) plain/convex mirrors to the aspherical/aspherical set when I can get the garage warm enough to pop the old mirrors out without breaking anything. 2. There was a note in the bottom of the box that said that I was getting these wheels that were originally for someone else who'd been naughty this year...so Santa dropped them off on my porch because I was extra good this year. Did you just tell on yourself? :D:D:D |

I drove my Bridgestone Dueler H/P Sport RFT (Summer ONLY) Tires in the snow, 25 degrees F. ICE and 6" Inches of snow.... AND THEY DID AMAZING.
I realize some of you may consider this "negligent" however I am no newbie to snow driving and know perfectly well how to responsibly drive in the snow. They did not grip as well as snow tires I would assume but staying under 30-40mph they drove fine, turned fine, and stopped fine. The traction control is very smart on the x5. |
Gave her a bath today.

Looks way better and matches my sport pkg window trim now. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65...5E27B0F383.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65...5E20681DD4.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65...5E2400D272.jpg |
That looks great DTM.

Can't do much until the 2nd (no tags until then) But we got a good 12" of snow last night. I decided to hop in the X earlier, let it warm up and put it in manual 1st and it idled through the 12" snow about 50-60' down my driveway. I was impressed. I cant wait to really romp on this thing in the snow.
|
Gotta give my X a bath so she looks as good as yours, I'll get you a few pics for a New years special Dan! I thought you'd be happy I got the X as my avatar haha!
Great job on the gloss black trim, ties in with the paint and the window trim so much better now. And I really love the city lights, do you not have xenons? your second pic looks like halogen low beams, I thought all premium packages had xenon but I could be wrong. Did you code off your turn signals as parking lights? In the pic with your low beam on I don't see the amber turns. |

hey guys... did anyone break these LED housings open? I've had these since the E39 days, they fit fine to facelifted E53 but they are toast... before ditching them, i was thinking about trying a new set of LEDs to solder in... but I can't get the damn thing open - I pulled it apart to the last piece where the dome of the LED is sitting but can't figure out if the AL piece is screwed together, pressure fitted, glued or snapped together...'
if you look at the circular ridges, you will see that at the top portion, there is wider gap with a thin line - I suspect, that it is where the top portion comes undone from the bottom... but how??? any advice? |
Made some snow angels this morning :driver:
|
Term, put them in a vise, grab the other side with a pipe wrench and give it a go. You don't have much to lose.
