Oil reports:
Motor: 4,468 mi. This is another good one to add to the books. As you can see, wear metals have hardly changed since last time and that's great, considering this oil was in use longer than last time. Your engine's internal parts don't seem to be having issues with one another, and if there is a mechanical problem, we're not seeing the evidence in the used oil. The viscosity was fine for a 0W/40 this time, and if that's what you used last time, it was probably fine back then too. No dirt, fuel, coolant, or water was found and the low insolubles show great oil filtration. Nice job! Transmission: 8,xxx mi Removing six quarts of oil certainly helped bring metals down to a more manageable level. There's still a ways to go before we can call some of these metals normal, but iron (steel) fell into the average range, so that's nice to see. Other metals made nice strides in the right direction too, so we won't be surprised if they read closer to or within the average range next time. Copper might take a while since it was so high, but it'll get there with time. No contamination was found and insolubles were at just a trace. So far, so good. Nice improvements! |

Looks really good!
Still thinking what to do with my dark poplar..wrap or water transfer...water transfer has a glossy finish..cost is higher too |
What finish are you looking for? I went with Oem Titan Silver but if I had the budget for water transfer I would buy OEM piano black trim, so rare and looks amazing!

@ four8is, would look AMAZING with your white seats! http://www.xoutpost.com/attachments/...erior-trim.jpg That pic doesn't have enough contrast for me, I think the white leather inserts in the doors and the white seats would be amazing for the trim. For what its worth, the Cosmoschwarz trim does have a tiny bit of metallic flake in it, it is not Jet Black. Hope that helps man, for what it costs to dip your trims in CF, do something even more rare and get the Cosmoschwarz trims, you could sell your wood trims on the forums or CL and get back some of the investment as well I bet. |
RB, I would have to agree, seeing that pic makes me want the black trim now.
Does anyone sell it for a decent price?ebay is empty..what's the price at the dealer if they even sell it anymore?gotta make some phone calls... |
For what its worth, I priced it out last year on RealOEM, let me get you the part numbers.
You have Nav right? So you don't need the CD player piece. I'll PM them to you, and for what its worth, I would order from the dealer online, www.thebmwpartstore.com in Ohio is a dealership that sells cheaper than Tischer, with more reasonable shipping prices, and obviously tax free since out of state. My local dealer wouldn't touch the prices I get from them. |

Awesome job on the PN sticker! I will save for future reference.
|
I kept it & put it in my manual!
It's weird. It is not purple, kind of green/grey. Much less glare. I need a forcefield, wife is out of town & it has no radio (scheduled Monday delivery) so it will sit safely in the garage until at least Monday afternoon. I hope the AVIC uses the same harness as the APPRADIO3 so it is just P&P! |
Posted the sticker in the CG thread & saw it said look through polarized lens so I put on my Maui Jims & not as purple (in the garage) as in the picture but there is purple. Maybe I will go for a drive.
lol |
Drove to the market, seems like less glare, it looks just like the rest of the Sekurit OM the rest of the X has whereas the aftermarket Sekurit it had was very clear.
|
My alternator died on 02 3L. Not sure it was actually voltage regulator or alternator itself as didn't have time to check.
Luckly, found used on craigslist (was from e39 530) for $80 and got her up and running again. When the alternator died, OBC was showing between 9.5V~10.5V. After changed 13.5V. Still seems little low side, so in few weeks, I'll install the new voltage regulator just for peace of mind. :) |
If it's between 13-14 volts when running you are perfectly ok
|
I recall between 13.2 and 14.5 considered normal.

Nothing major...
Just bought my baby a "new" rebuilt engine. Experienced engine failure back in September of last year and Wifey told me I was NOT going to have it fixed. So after mopping around for months she told me I could get my baby back on the road so called the shop to have them order me a rebuilt engine (from TX). Engine arrived on Monday so about a week away from having her back in my life (to me she never left). First mod I want to do is AE...so let the research begin. THANKS!!!

I honestly don't remember the mileage but I believe I was somewhere around 150k. It wasn't exactly an engine failure per se...timing chain slipped off track (brittle plastic guide) and was running on the crankshaft. Mechanic just said better to get a rebuilt with a warranty than having them open up mine to see what damage was done. I'm not at all mechanically inclined so hope this explains the situation...

Today, summer tires [Cooper Zeon Xsta 255/55/18s] mounted on the recent BMW 209 style wheels bargain purchase and mounted with hubcentric adapter rings; store the Conti DWS on original wheels for winter use. There is always something!
|
at 205305km I replaced the sparkplugs ,figured they where do ,and after all the plugs got fouled in the winter due to a hydrolocked engine it would a good idea. by the way the engine isn`t sucking in anymore oil and plugs where clean when they came out .

Replaced spark plugs and coilpacks at 82k miles. Was getting some intermittent vibration on acceleration along with random misfire. Everything felt pretty good on the test drive

Drained my M54 of the Mobil 1 0W40, and refilled with 8 quarts of Rotella T6 5W40, and installed a new Mann oil filter. Here's hoping the months of ridiculous oil consumption are over! And maybe it's placebo effect, but I swear she runs smoother now!
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Gary I can almost guarantee you won't consume any.
T6 doesn't shear down like M1, what was your consumption like with Mobil? |
Drove in the 112 Az sun glare is much less & NEX is much brighter/ less impacted by glare than the Appradio3 was. Also good no windshield damage.

Removed the old timing chain tensioner and installed new one from Pelican. The old tensioner had zero deflection (frozen) where as the new one has a one inch deflection. Prior to this change I could hear the chain chattering now it is smooth and quite, hopefully this change was in time before any serious damage occurred to the timing chain guides.

I installed a new factory X5 trailer hitch the weekend (after spray painting it all black with tremclad to avoid any rusting issues). Got my Powerflex tension arm bushings today and will take a stab at putting them in myself - I also got a HF 5 ton hydraulic gear puller, thanks to the posts here.
The current bushings are only about 3 yrs old and not damaged, but you can see the rubber deflecting at rest. Wish me luck! Bill |
Quote:
If they're rusted you might have to hacksaw the sleeve to release the OE bushing. Mine pressed right out, but the X has never seen snow. You may want the 12 ton HF puller for this job ($15 more), the 5 ton was near its limit. Read post #3602 for installing the Powerflex bushings. |

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/20/gumezy9y.jpg ORIGINAL CCV is out, dated 9/7/2003. Amazed it made it so long. Cold weather version and cold weather dipstick guide tube going in and hoping for another 10 years of service out of it. Not the hardest job in the world just absolutely tedious, with little room to work. I don't know how the E39 and E46 guys do it as they have even less room in their engine bay than we do |
Driver door inside pull handle ordered, broke getting in the X today. 63.xx plus shipping????
|
Pulled off the valve cover (3.0), cleaned and RTV'd the semicircular cam cut-outs that were leaking a bit. I read in forum posts that this should be done, but not seeing it when I took it apart I did not use any sealer the first time.
Oh well, lesson learned! Next is to exchange my 5 ton HF puller for a 12 ton per TiAgX5s advice. Tension rod bushings next weekend! |
replaced rear both upper control arms and lower balljoint/bushings and integral link
on the rear axle both sides |
Fixed the rear left lights and re-initialized the pano roof. I was relieved to see my rear lights were just a dead bulb and need for some dielectric grease and cleaned contacts; not the melty/burn issue older models seem to experience. Re-initializing the pano was a breeze. Hauled a 5x10 enclosed U-haul to move a storage unit. No gripes from the U-Haul, excellent towing performance.

Probably the bulk of my delay on completing the job was trying to get the new cold weather dipstick guide tube and new O-ring seated back in the pan, "a light push into the pan" doesnt cut it, fitment is TIGHT with that O-ring. I ended up having to mini-sledge on the bolt bracket to get it in all the way and lined up with the bolt bracket on the engine block. Then I spent another 45 mins making sure I had all my plugs right and plugged in so I wouldn't get any funky codes at startup. Including cleaning the throttle body, total time of disassembly and reassembly was approx 5.5 hours, but then again I take my time and try to be as thorough as possible, and of course I dropped a couple of screws and sockets along the way lol! After sweating over my engine bay all weekend I treated her to a thorough degreasing and dressing when I was done, I'll post a pic later. |
Glad to hear you got that done RB  How was your "mayo" situation? You'll sleep easier for a while now.

Happy to report ZERO mayo under the oil cap, ZERO mayo coming out of the dripping hoses as well, although you could tell there has been 11 years of burned up oil residue in there. I'm sure I burned out any of the crazy gunk lately as I have been doing a lot more long trips, we recently did a 200 mile stint at 80 mph so its fairly clean. Dare I say it idles a little smoother as well? As well, I only have had to add a half quart of oil since November, which is pretty good! I'm hoping that with my Rotella T6 and new CCV my oil consumption will be next to nothing from here on out. |

Decided NOT to do my tension arm bushings after finding the HF 12 ton puller was really too big to get a grip on the thrust arm. I've used a local alignment and suspension shop for things over the years - including replacement of the tension arm bushings 2 years ago - so I'll have him do it.
One question - do you just force the larger OD flange of the Powerflex bushing through the tension arm hole? Every other bushing I've seen in this type of application has been split, but this is one piece. Does the flange compress enough? Also noticed another thing that needs fixing (isn't there always something), the headlight leveler has lost whatever it's attached to. Still works when I manually move the arm, but hole is broken out over a portion of it's circumference. |

From post #3602....... To install the Powerflex bushing, I used a 1/2 X 7" bolt/nut/washers with my 1/2 drive metric oil filter canister socket on the bushing and a 3X3 3/4" steel plate clearance drilled for the 1/2 bolt on the control arm, I installed with the greased steel sleeves inside the bushing to help guide the bushing along the bolt. |

Did an oil change on the weekend. Last one was done by shop when I got it, so this was my first. I was amazed at how fast 8L can expunge itself from the bottom of the vehicle. My catch tray funnel neck was no match and it made for a nice clean up exercise after. Lesson learned.
I also wanted to drop the pan to check for plastic/metal bits as I've only had it for 10,000km now. Time was a bit tight and most recommend replacing the pan bolts with new/coated ones, so I held off until next change when I can get the bolts. |
Changed the tires:
got Delinte Desert Storm in factory spec'd staggered sizes off "buywheelstoday" off ebay for $526 delivered Had Tires Plus mount and Road Force balance them for $156.94 out the door with the taxes and what not... so far the ride is quiet, we'll see how they will hold up the long use... previous tires, the Toyo Proxes II were installed at 72557 miles and went completely kaput (metal carcass showing on rear right, with others not far behind) at 111670... 39113 miles, just a bit shy of 40 K miles... |
changed the coolant...........................
|
Treated the X5 to a new set of Yokohama YK580 tires after the last set managed to last 43,000 miles. :D
Then tried not to be too upset when the wiring harness on the fan shroud fell into the engine fan, shorted out, and fried the auxiliary fan and disabled my air conditioning on a fine 103 degree day in Texas. At 258,984 miles, things will happen. :trustme: At least these tires will last longer thanks to my new rear suspension bushings and proper alignment! 2002 X5 3.0 258,984 miles 2004 325i 115,064 miles (The CEO loaned me hers for the day:thumbup:) |
Put a new headlight height rod on the control arm and wired the other end to the plastic lever on the position switch - the hole had broken out on the top end. Hey, why spend and extra $90+ for a switch that works just fine when some wire will do just fine.

Got my tension arm poly bushings installed. The shop ended up grinding a slight chamfer on them to get them in - what a goofy design. But the braking shake is GONE - very solid feel now.
$237 for the labor, including an alignment. Beats me breaking something! Bill |
I prayed that nothing else will fail on my X5
Preventive thinking i call it :) |

Those grille badge looks better on older classic BMWs but doesn't look too bad your X.

Bought a stack of fresh 315's today!

I had one on my e30, looked great. Not sure. Need to wash the X today, I'll decide afterwards. |

Same as before sir, Bridgestone Dueller HP Sport Non-RFT 315/35/20's all around. Got 50k out of the old ones, going to stick with what works!

I get a kick out of postings sometimes "I only got 45k out of XXX brand tire, what should I switch to?" The fact that our 3 ton behemoths aren't roasting through meats every 30k is impressive to me, if I get 30k or higher out of a staggered set I'd replace with the same damn ones lol! |
Been in teh sun all day. Sub is functionally done, I had to run RCAs to get sound none of the using the stock outputs worked. I ran all 5 channels while I was doing it bit 1/2 a$sed out behind the front seat because (a) it was 115 in the garage & (b) I was not prepared to pull apart the whole center console, rear carpet & both sides of the door trim.
It will take some dialing in to get it right but I like having real bass, I will say as a median the OEM did a great job. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps64aba134.jpg I washed her this morning while it was "only" 95, still not sold on th badge, thinking maybe moving it to the upper left corner of the passenger grill. |

Installed DMH electric oval cutouts.

^NICE!
I had a similar set up on my 350Z, made a big difference. |
The summer tires the X came were shot. PO had left suspension to die. I picked up a used set off kijiji for $320 a while back. Before I put new tires on, I want to make sure all is good with suspension and alignment. At the tire shop this morning and discovered that non-RFTs were coming off and the used ones were the RFTs. They are the Bridgestone Duellers. On the plus side, they have a meatier sidewall, so they look the part. On the negative side, this is my wife's daily driver and there is no TPMS on this X. Guess I'll be checking pressures a lot. I do recall seeing valve caps that colour based on tire pressure so you can visually see if pressure has dropped. I just can't bring myself to do that to the X though.
New winter rubber goes on the winter rims this season and new summer rubber will go on next year. Non-RFT though. :) |

Awesome, I think you'll enjoy them. They run a little wide in thier size too which is another plus. :)

This evening I replaced the brake booster vacuum pump seals with the kit from BMP design. I tried sealing the cover with some permatex a couple weeks ago. It didn't work. Hopefully I've got it now! It seems good!
I also replaced all the T20 torx bolts since one was stripped to hell and I had to drill the head off.... I used some allen-head M6 10.9 bolts/screws from my local Ace hardware store. |
Hey guys I installed.ed interior conversion kit, dis assembled the new aftermarket headlamps for morimoto retro rebuilding and Xbaled lighting.
Going to order heated seats pads soon and retro fit but I'm wondering maby if I have stock wiring ore layer?? Then I'll just go OEm? |
What type of morimoto retrofit are you doing???
|
And what type of housings and projectors are you working on?
|

Details make all the difference on an install like this. It looks like they came OE. |
01 03 BMW E53 x5 LED Halo Projector Black Headlights RH LH | eBay
These are the housings I'm using. I'm going morimoto matchbox 2.0 and 5000k for high beam and fxr 2.5 and 6000k for low beam. And halo rings to match from morimoto too. Replacing top glow bar with phosphorus lighting tube , blacking the chrome shroud on the stock cover too . Iv built up a few cheap headlight set ups with morimoto systems and customers are over the moon. |
I'm a fan of the materials you are using for the install but not a fan of those housings at all, I hope you improve the looks somewhat on those with the finished result! Looking forward to the progress

8 liters of Moble 1 0-40 and a fresh BMW filter. A good wash too!
|
Finally changed out the fluid in my pre-Xdrive transfer case with Mobil 1 Syn ATF. Both differentials next weekend with Mobil 1 Syn 75w-90.
|
Shopping for parts to refresh suspension. Should I just do bushings or the whole arms? I don't have hydraulic press so I am thinking the whole arms.
What's your suggestion? |
I would get the whole arms, only reason I would just buy bushings is if I was replacing with powerflex in the thrust arm.
I did full thrust arms, ball joints, tie rods, wishbone control arms, and front sway bar bushings (end links already were done by PO) when I did mine. |

those look awsome.

I fixed my cd changer today! The cartridge wouldn't eject so I took it off and dislodged it with a credit card, gave it a whack and it started working. But after 2 days it was hung again. Took it off once more watched how the mechanical parts were moving and noticed it was scratchy and very dry so I used a tiny bit of wd-40 and it's working again. Hopefully it only needed a little lubrication. Yay me!

I updated my MKIV nav system to version 32 last night.
|
3 days ago I replaced the clutch fan, zip tied down some wires that somehow broke the clips that hold them in place replaced a vacuum line that was cracked and replaced the fitting on another vacuum line that was cracked.
result: engine takes a little longer to warm up and does not try to overheat while stopped. whistling noise gone. ticking noise is getting quieter the more I drive it. I can no longer hear it with the hood closed (used to be very faint noise) has quieted to the point the sound of the air that the engine fan makes moving the air is louder over 1k rpm. more parts on the way.... |
drive it for the first time....
properly :) and found out........... my pcd sensors arnt working (button in console is flashing) my wing mirrors arnt folding in ( but i didnt know they did anywhoo,. plus not too bothered. i got an error on my leveling suspension, "self-leveling suspension inactive" only once , going to look into that one, later today im going to be waxxing it and polishing :) |
My E53 had 7 faulty parking sensors when I got it. Ebay has loads, you need a different one for the front corners than the other 6 (and if it's a FL model, the bumper has to come off for the fronts.
|
srmmmm, both front and rear. Already bought the kit. I'll have a busy weekend coming up.

I did turn on perspective view! It's cool. I like it. Makes it feel more "modern". Still kind of confused about the availability of updated maps though....
I did some reading but didn't come up with a conclusion of where to obtain them. |
haha here we go again ,
today decided to upgrade the satnav, didn't go as well as I had planned, burned cd in wrong mode, crashed the cd drive (mk3) had to take it apart, to get disk out, THEN it decided it didn't want to accept disks, physically wouldn't go in , again had to take it apart to get a cd in , burned another cd , proper mode, sat nav said upgrading , then said resetting , please wait , so I waited, ...........................30 mins later I thought its crashed and turned ignition off. took cd out , then thought , hmm , ignitions been on all this time , yeah you guessed it flat battery. let it till now (I had to go to sleep.) car fires up ok which is odd seeing as it was dead earlier, sat nav is updated :) it works warning lights on dash im not too happy about tho , abs/tc and the 3 on the far right, computer wont let me see mpg on screen it just shows (--) |
Replaced throttle position sensor for the nitrous. Sometimes the it was firing when I was taking off normally. Quite a surprise if I was turning a corner.
|
today I.....
replaced my rear right pdc sensor, they all "tick" when u put your ear to them . however the pdc system itself still doesn't work (flashes and beeps) then I tried to put my door cards on as my new leds for the door handles turned up. (they didn't work either when connected to loom) tested old led after I cut it off, it worked, then re attached old back to car, then tried to connect the Bowden cable back onto door handle and that broke ( tried to repair it as it broke when I took it off to remove door card) so sum up, ive still not got my pdc's working. still not got my door card on, still got my tools all over the boot HOWEVER . I not got auto lights working and my little leds in the door handles, best thing is I went to local bmw dealers going there there is a loooooong tunnel :) v8 noise :) oh and I saw a i8 at dealers , very very nice car |
My first post as an x5 owner. This is what i installed this week. Sorry about the crappy wheels. New real ones are on now but no current pics. Wife wanted blue calipers, it's her car...so they are blue

Where did you get the brake caliper cover? Everyone of them I've seen have Brembo on them. Looks clean with them on.

TMV, Good luck and wishing you no busted knuckles.

Good luck Tam!

rears suspension
X5 just got new rear upper control arms and rear guide arms .Has any here replaced there subframe bushing w/ powerflex bushing ? ride quality ?
|
I replaced with Meyle HD, ride quality is solid. Powerflex is almost 4x the cost of the Meyle HD bushings and I didn't think it would be 4x better of a bushing considering the originals lasted 10 years.
Many have reported that the Powerflex bushings are nice, but again, just playing the other side of the coin that any replacement bushing is going to be better than a shot OE bushing. One would have to put a fresh OE/Meyle HD bushing in, and then swap out for Powerflex to see if you actually "feel" the difference. |

today, I just cleaned and polished it :)

Replaced the aux fan, oil separator drain pipe, and rear roundel yesterday too. Productive day! |
Hey J. Did you see your car's picture on Facebook, the BMW X5 group? Take a look. Let me know if you need link
|
Hey Terminator that's pretty cool! I probably missed it if they posted recently. Hope all is well man. WILL NOT miss bimmerfest next year. :)
|
Took the X5 on its longest "shakedown" run yet since I've been chasing/fixing various-leaks since March. Knocked off about 180 continuous miles yesterday. Very happy to say - it didn't leak a drop!
|
Washed and detailed- (weekly effort), screwed in some new plugs, and checked all the fliuds. All OK.
Idles so much better and there was an improvement in tip in aceleration, normal for any new plugs. Oh, I pulled out the OE single ground strap fine wire and replaced with multi prong ground straps. Simple job with the right hand tools everyone has in their box. The X5 now has 55K on her. |
