Bryan I think I’m being really stupid here but I still can’t find the springs you used and I do want some for my 4.8 in the UK. Do you have any part numbers please? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

These are original from a 2003 X5. Can definitely take the rod end off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Here are some dimensions of my inexpensive springs that may help you source some:
Spring ID: ~15mm Uncompressed Length of 1 Spring: ~85mm Uncompressed Length of Combined 1.5 Springs: ~130mm The approximate 130mm length yields approximate full spring compression, also known as fully "stacked", when the hatch is closed. The ~15mm ID may need some persuasion to thread over the ball end of the hatch strut (or unscrew it and slide on shaft). Consider wearing gloves and safety glasses during this installation process. Your results may vary. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eX...g=w673-h898-no |
Got my springs installed last night. Blue like the eBay ones, for 1/3 of the price. Have a few things I want to do to it before I post up my results, as I'm not 100% happy with the springs digging into the the ball socket.
Blue doesn't shoot my hatch up fully open, but it was only 48 degrees in the garage and my struts are original from '03. |

https://youtu.be/V08LVMD4bqY A quick video explaining dimensions of the springs to buy, and how to measure what you need. This cost me $8 in the end, and had some fun learning about this. Just got over 1k subscribers on my YouTube, so trying to grow it now! |
