It is hard to imagine a way for an intake boot to develop a 'hole', just spontaneously. That must be why they wanted to confim. Or maybe they are lying.

If it was a crack at a flex location, maybe due to a thin molding process, they will approve it. Someone drilling a 1/2" hole might be another story. The other way they get damaged is being abused when taking it off or putting it on for repairs.

Good luck on the replacement... did you know that BMW doesn't know about this newfangled thing called "Next Day Air"?

Seriously, they are idiots when it comes to parts delivery.

Thanks guys. The national back order part scares me. Sounds like I may be driving this X3 for a while :saad: I miss my beast.

I'll keep you posted.

That blows, I had a part that took 3 months until I called BMWNA and complained. At least you have the X3 to drive. I know it's not your X6, but better than nothing...

I had another part that took 5 weeks until I called and complained about it as well.

Duck tape? Sorry, I couldn't resist. Surely you meant duct tape.

I had an intake duct fail on a non-BMW vehicle, a VW, some years ago. Vehicle was 6 months old. It caused a reduced-power mode. Co-incidentally, that part was on national back-order as well. They forecast 2 weeks to get one to me. I tracked down that they were all failing, and VW had frozen all related parts inventory because they were from the same manufacturing lot, so they didn't know which ones were 'safe'. It wasn't strictly speaking a delivery problem, but rather a supplier manufacturing problem. I was several thousand miles from home. I convinced the dealer (in Siena Italy, and working in my very basic Italian) to take one off another vehicle on the lot to get mine running (temporarily), until the new parts were available. They did so. Worth a try.

Umm...

You're right. The stuff I'd use to fix an air leak in a intake boot on a $60k+ BMW is silver. Green just doesn't give the repair that professional look

Craig - You're right, it could be worse. The X3 isn't bad. I took it to the car wash yesterday and had it sand blasted - it was filthy. It's just a pain in the ass, I'm so used to my comfort access, I keep having to dig for the key. AND my EZ Pass is mounted on my license plate so I have to remember to actually stop to pay the toll everyday.

JCL - I'm not going to freak just yet. If it goes past the week, I'll suggest the switch. Thanks I haven't noticed any decrease in power but this is the third time the light came on. It would be really scary if I'm supposed to have more power than I already had.

Funf... What can I say.

EDIT: On second thought, I will ask on Monday for them to take the part from another vehicle. I have a brand new $83K car with less than 5,000 miles on the clock. Why should I have to wait a week for a part. What do I have to lose? They did switch out a part once for one of my brother's 7s.

I got the light on today :(
Went to Autozone and had them check it. Their Actron fault code reader said EVAP leakage and/or Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction
Does anyone know what's involved to fix this?
