I've never seen a mention of m57 or n57 and spun rod bearing so I'm betting nope. I think that's an exclusive to N55 motor issue.
B48, S55 and newer use an improved mapping. The one i don't know about is N20. –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone |
Yeah, the M57 is good for a few hundred thousand miles or more if oil changes are kept up. It's a solid engine really. Keep the oil and filter fresh and I like getting the used oil analyzed so if a problem develops, I can hopefully catch it early.

What have you done to your E70 today?
Amen. I don't think the oil pump is dme controlled. N55 is the first one i think to do it and they last past the warranty so BMW is not going to admit fault.
The newer models that use dme have higher pressures and "surprise surprise" no systemic rod bearing failures –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone |
Great, so I only have to worry about the entire emission system, fuel system, turbos, vacuum system, footwell module, and not the oil system too.
|
Footwell module, yeah unfortunately. Mines been replaced once under the extended warranty, $800 installed at the dealer in 2015.
Emissions control systems, yep. That's the worst part of the entire drivetrain. Get the engine to operating temperature often and don't let it suffer short, 'down the road for snacks' trips. Turbo is another 200k+ (really plus) mile item. Use the "best" oil with the lowest SAPS, highest NOACK volatility, HTHS and flashpoints, let the turbo cool down for a bit before shutdown and you will maximize that service life. The vacuum system hoses and other hoses (boost piping) will get old and probably age out. The canister can crack, too. |
Been catching up on some basic maintenance lately...
Been catching up on some basic maintenance lately...
Replaced Fuel Feed Line/ Temp Sensor (thanks to it killing the DDE) :wow: Replaced Thermostat Replaced Water Pump Replaced Coolant Flange Replaced Glow Plug controller and Glow Plugs Replaced Vacuum Lines (went silicon for better or worse) Replaced the (surprise, surprise) brittle CCV hose Cleaned up Intake Manifold/Swirl Flaps/ EGR carbon deposits.. Replaced Gaskets (a couple were leaking oil all over the side of the block) And replaced the Temp Sensor And "Fuel Quality Control Valve" while I was in there Also drained coolant in the process, but didn't get out as much as expected. Upon vacuum refill, it only took in just shy of a gallon? My understanding is capacity is just shy of 2 gallons? I removed the lowermost hose I could find to drain, but seems there was still a lot left in the system after doing so. So I may end up draining and filling again to try to get as much fresh coolant (BMW Blue 50/50 with distilled water) in there as possible? On the opposite end of the spectrum.. 'Vacuumed' the fluid out of the power steering reservoir with a large syringe.. And directly opposite the coolant situation, got a full liter out.. Which seem to be the stated system capacity? :dunno: Again, may to the same process in a few hundred miles to try to exchange as much fluid as possible? |

Consider this: https://www.bmwdieselparts.com/produ...it-13537806960 I too have oil leakage that seems like the turbo oil lines and something around the valve cover or intake manifold. Seems bad but I don't have to top off the oil so it's either new or, as most oil leaks are, not bad and is just being blown around everywhere. I'm documenting mine here: https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...82k-miles.html |

I took the vacuum pump apart and resealed it (couldn't find a gasket for the cover, so had to use gasket maker), and its been dry since. As far as I can tell (a couple of thousand miles later) the driver's side of the block is still dry as well.. |
