Yeah but a 116 mph trap speed is really good...and look at it this way...you're getting there in 11.95 seconds vs. for example your E63 which has the same trap speed but takes 12.8 seconds to get there. Just think how much farther down the road the X5M will be by 12.8 seconds...and at that point will be going well over 120 mph and still pulling away.

I cannot wait to rematch my buddy's B7. That will be way too easy.
I did not tell him how fast it has run with the tune. I will tell him it did not pick up a thing.

I did forget some details on the tune.

I read about this tune on this board and a few others. Most guys who had this tune, had two seperate tunes. One for 91 and one for 100octane.

I mentioned to Roman that in NJ our Premium is 93 octane. So they tuned mine for 93 octane. He said it would make more power then a 91 tune, as long as the octane was there. and because the system is adaptive to octane, I did not need a seperate tune for 100 octane. now if you are stuck with a 91 tune, you WILL need a second tune for 100. The system is not that adaptive. but with a 93 tune, it is adaptive to 100 with just one tune.

info on ess tune , unless i missed it they don't speek of hp ??

X5M ecu software.
ESS tuning software takes the 4.4l twin turbo to new heights, with breathtaking torque and gobs of silky smooth horsepower. The new V8 TT software gives power where its needed, BMWs line up of vehicles that offer this power plant are larger heavier cars and SUVs that need a increased low end torque to propel them to speed effortlessly and with up to 655 ft-lb ESS does just that!

ESS flash loader is now an available option for this vehicle. This allows you to switch maps/tunes at any time. this also allows you to load the stock map before going to the dealer or having warranty work completed. in addition, if the dealer accidentally flashes over the the performance tune, you can simply flash it back yourself without having to send in your ECU.

For more information on this product, call Jon @480-7476150

available for 2010up 4.4l M vehicles.

looks like with the handheld programmer its $2499 , pls correct me if im wrong , active is $1500 and can be done locally @ a perf shop here on long island and if software is flashed @ dealer $90 will get you a new flash !

i have experience with active i had a tune from them on my m5 that i was very happy with ! a very reputable tuner to say the least aswell !

The ess tune was 2k.
I usually never bother with tunes. Due to the fact that alot of places not local require you to send in your ECU. Or in some cases they are close enough to tune in the car. BUT, what happens when you bring it to the dealer??? The can see a tune. All the parameters are changed. and like you mentioned they might reflash and now your tune is gone. Granted your guy is local, so he can reload it. But how about if you had to send the ECU in again?and worse case scenario, dealer sees the changed parameters and voids your warranty?

So that is why I never bothered with a tune. Granted Dinan has Motors West in NJ. But I always thought the gains with Dinan stuff was not worth the cost. Maybe the new software is different.

I went for the ESS tune mainly for the user interface. i like being able to put it back to stock without outside help. The handheld can hold 10 different tunes if needed. You need a handheld and a battery charger and you can change it at anytime. As far as claimed HP numbers??? ESS has a dyno sheet. But frm my gains, I can say that is WAY conservative. I picked up about 7 MPH in the 1/4.
7 MPH is alot. I would have spent 20k to gain 7MPH in my dragcar!!!!

Roman brought up a great point. With this turbo engine, they can make alot of HP. But at what cost? On another site that was talking about tunes, someone mentioned that he broke his rear halfshaft and the dealer was NOT warrantying it! basically with software, you can make more HP/Torque then the rest of the drivetrain can handle. So while big numbers sell the product, but at what cost?

dont get me wrong. the ESS tune might be destroying my truck as I drive it right now. There is no way to know, until it happens. My main reason was the self tune feature. But as far as performance, I am more then satisfied.

A bunch of guys I know from LI are renting Atco in Sept. if you want, get the active tune, come down and we can test softwares and see how much or little they make. I would love to know.

I also installed the ESS tune with the hand held tuner. I wanted to have the flexibility of swapping the factory tune in if it was necessary to take the truck to the dealer. I also installed the K&N filters and RPI exhaust. The X5 M will easily outrun my M6 with ESS tune and bolt ons.

I am not doing any exhaust mods.
I like still being able to drop the hammer on a side road late at night. Without drawing any attention.

But how did you feel about the K&N drop ins?? They are fairly cheap so it is not a loss if they do not gain performance. But I do not want them to hinder performance.

I say hinder, because when i had my E46 M3, the factory paper filter flowed more then the K&N drop in. Infact some guy made a homebuilt flowbench and checked different filters!!! and the K&N had lower CFM over the factory paper.

Do these trucks have charcoal filters sandwiched with the air filters?

Leadfoot, when you did the K&N filters did you also remove the charcoal filters (if there are any)? I have heard that taking them out is good for about 10 hp in an M5, so I'd imagine they would give even more power in this car.

Have you noticed any change in gas mileage since the tune? I'd actually expect it to be a bit better, depending on your driving style. It can't be much worse...I'm getting 13.3 avg, which is actually better than the 6 that was on the gauge when I picked it up (I have a pic of this). I actually get better gas mileage in my Aston Martin...and that's supercharged with over 600 hp!
