Seems to indicate that if you are over 100,000 miles and for whatever reason do not currently plan to do the timing chain job, replacing the tensioner with the revised longer version is a worthwhile consideration. May have to shade tree a tool to reach and remove the tensioner but easy to do.

I got a little carried away earlier. I have allready changed primary chain + guides, upper chains + the slidepieces on the upper tensioners. The tensioner for the primary chain is new too. What i meant was that the old chain had more slack in it, allowing the tensioner to extend more to pick up the slack 😄

Yes, I understood. I don't think you are carried away at all. If someone here is going to take on the timing chain project your approach is a great reference.

My suggestion was only if a member has an engine with the old shorter tensioner it is well worth the time and money to replace it with the longer version so the chains don't start eating up the guides as soon.

Ok. I didnt know there was 2 types of tensioners, the one i removed was the same lenght as the new one, exept for the internal spring that had got a bit compressed. I have mostly posted engine pictures, but today i feel generous so heres a pic of the car on stands 👍😄

Why would BMW offer two types of tensioners and only one part number?

They discontinued the original one and replaced it with the longer version. I don't remember if part number changed or not.

So I would imagine that the part number would have to have changed for it to be a longer unit. So if you ordered a tensioner today from BMW dealer you should be supplied with the upgraded replacement tensioner.

Okay for additional clarity. I went ahead and looked up the part number for my BMW X5 4.6is and the tensioner that they show by part number: 11317531813 is the newer revised version because when you click on the part number information icon in BMWFans it shows the old discontinued tensioner that was produced from December 91 to June 2003. This part number was 11311736023

Found this on bimmerforum, seems that the difference is the spring. Otherwise i think the parts looks the same 😄
