Basically hold the metal tab in place where it will be at for the radio to screw to it. Then look and see where the hole is that the tab will bolt to the car. See if there are screws there already. If so those are what is holding that frame in. Remove them and then the frame will come out.
The MID/CD frame doesn't come out - it's part of the dash.

There are two part numbers for the entire dash - one for the Nav version and one for the MID/CD version. They are different.

That video shows how to remove the thing WITHOUT cutting anything.

Its for an e39 but I would think it would work for the X5 too wouldn't it?

Ok after looking more I'm betting yes you can remove it but it wont leave anything to bolt the radio to with it out

But that does allow for one to do the surgery at the bench for a better possibly more precise cut and fit

Wow - yeah, that is different... I don't think the E53 is anything like that. And check out the parts listing for the dash...

Part #1 is the main dash and two part numbers are given..

01 Trim panel dashboard, radio SCHWARZ/GRAU 1 02/2002 51457001057 +core
01 Trim panel dash board, on-board monitor SCHWARZ/GRAU 1 02/2002 51457001095 +core

The wood door over the CD player is a separate part, like in the E39 but it has no frame on it... (part #4).

Hence folk using a dremel.
