Which water pump do you have...#1 or #17? (See last diagram below) Ditto WPOLL...you need to either enter the last 7 digits of your VIN when looking up parts...or select the appropriate model/engine/build date range that would apply to your 03 X5. When you do...then as seen in the 3rd & 4th screen shots below...everything should line up. When you get to the diagram and select which aux water pump you have...then all the BMW models that use the same part nbr should be listed when you click the appropriate links that give that info. It looks like some Euro 3.0s and the diesel does share a water valve with some V8s. Also, to help explain the part database...the part number search feature is saying that part # 64 11 6 904 496 was used for a specific production period...and the other successive part nbrs listed (along with the production dates they were used...are "retrospectively exchangeable"...meaning that they can be used, too...if you're looking for the part and run across them:

Thanks, I have #17. I have now ordered the exact part number (6913489). I ordered a re-manufacturered Alternator (Bosch AL0703X or 0124515050)- which said it fits the X5 3.0i M54. Let me know if that isn't correct! Also, I used force to remove the alternator belt (as I didn't have a Torx T50 to loosen the belt properly). I used my hand, and and a rounded metal edge to get it off... Nothing looks wrong/broken, but I have no idea if this belt is sensitive or fragile. Could I have caused damage to the alternator belt by doing that?

Belt is very tough. You can use a hex that fits in the T50 to release tension. If your belt is old enough it may be worth replacing anyhow though.
I would be interested in taking a look at the old alternator if shipping cost is not ludicrous. My wife's x5 is about 20,000 miles behind mine so I won't be surprised if within a year or two I'll be doing her alternator Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I suggest purchasing a set of Torx sockets. You will need them for other work and you can justify the purchase based on all the labor dollar savings from this DIY. Very good suggestion to replace the belt and if you do you will need the Torx sockets since the belt will go on much harder than old belt. Not that hard to bend a pulley.

My E53 has 130k miles and I don't know if its every been replaced. Is that a lot for one alternator to handle? Is it safe to start the car without Auxiliary Water Pump connected? In order to check the new alternator is charing. Reason I ask is, the alternator will arrive in a couple days, but the replacement pump be a few weeks

When you do get the new aux pump installed you will need to top up the coolant and bleed the coolant system before starting the car.

Hi all. So I took your advice and bought a new auxilary water pump.
Yes- it took this long to arrive New alternator installed. Now to test it. I plan to unlock the cluster to check the battery charges. It says 11.3 volts. The battery hasn't been touched in a long time. Is that bad? Should I drive the car a while, then turn it off and see if the voltage hasimproved? When I broke the old one, heaps of liquid came out. Now it says "coolant level low". I forgot to top up and "bleed" the old coolant. I started it for like 10 seconds. How does the bleed process go?

Loosen the bleed screw near the radiator cap, then top up the coolant (use correct coolant that matches what is already in there), then close bleed screw when air stops coming out and is replaced by coolant flowing instead. Lots of info on his if you google it.
Don't run/drive the car with a low coolant level - or get coolant all over the new alternator. Both will end badly for you... Top up the coolant before starting it again, and put a plastic bag over the alternator while you top it up. Good luck...
